Painting Woodwork in and Around Your Home

Posted:28 February, 2005 by admin

There is no rule which says you must paint woodwork white, or strip it, or color it to
merge with the walls. In a room whose walls, window frames and doors are in the same
neutral color, you could paint the skirting board a clear contrasting color. This will
define the line between the floor and walls. Trim colors that contrast with walls and
ceilings might suit your style in one room, while a more subtle color change might be
right somewhere else in the house.

You can liven up plain, flat walls by adding moldings so as to create panels around the room. For best results, make sure you keep your working area within the proper
temperature range recommended for the paint. All interior woodwork that has been
stripped, from baseboard to dining room tables, needs to be primed with either a
standard acrylic wood primer. After that you can paint on it with oil-based flat
eggshell, gloss, or acrylic paints.

Most interior woodwork looks best in an eggshell finish, as high-gloss paint can have a
rather bleak, deadening effect. If your plan is to paint walls, ceiling, and trim, then it’s
best to get the trim painted first, along with the room’s windows and doors. Paint
woodwork in small sections. Keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

A wide range of broken-color effects work well on woodwork, but ideally you should
use oil-based paints as latex has little durability on wood. Stains add color to wood
while allowing its natural grain pattern to show through. Varnishes are clear finishes
that form a tough coating over stain. They are available in a range of finish sheens
from satin to high gloss. At the end of a project, combine all of the leftover paint of
the same color into as few cans as possible.

If you live in the southwestern American desert, chances are you are no stranger to hard water and its irritating side effects. In fact, the Southwest has some of the worst hard water in the country. This nettlesome problem has plagued homeowners for years and can cause numerous and sometimes costly results including hard water stains, corroded valves and faucets, and lackluster hair and skin. Even worse, hard water causes limescale, a hard mineral deposit that is chalky and off-white in color.

Scale is typically found in kettles, hot-water boilers, hot-water central heating systems, and other elements that employ the use of water. Limescale can also clog pipes and damage plumbing systems, as we found out the hard way.

My husband and I discovered the extent of our hard water problem a little too late. The realtor apparently did not know (or forgot to mention) the “minor” problem of the clogged plumbing pipes which had been the result of limescale build up. As the pipes become more and more clogged, the water flow would become restricted, thus dramatically reducing water pressure throughout the house. Not only was this a headache to deal with (showering felt like standing outside in a light rain), it also caused serious and expensive damage to our plumbing and heating equipment. Scale had built up on the central heating unit, insulating the heater, which caused it to use far more energy than it should have, resulting in a premature burnout. Replacing the system as well as having a plumber fix all our pipes was a very costly endeavor (not to mention our high heating costs prior to the burnout) that probably could have been avoided.

After having dealt with this ordeal, we found the best solution was to have an Arizona water softener installed to avoid future problems with hard water. The cost to have one installed was a mere fraction of the costs the hard water incurred in the first place. Not only will a water softener reduce limescale and heating costs, your water-using appliances will last longer, your clothes and dishes will come out cleaner and brighter, and the domestic tap water even tastes better.

Kitchen Remodeling

Posted:28 February, 2005 by admin

Are you excited about a kitchen remodeling project? Or, are you simply trying to find out if you can afford one in the first place? The kitchen is the center of your home. It is where people will meet and talk. You will prepare the food you will feed your children there. And, those smells will stay with them for many years to come. When you create your kitchen, it is important to make it a comfortable and good quality working environment.

Before dreaming big takes over, you need to find your budget. This may not be the fun part of remodeling the kitchen but it will keep you in line when you get out there to begin looking at materials and appliances. Will you be able to remodel the entire kitchen or will you just purchase specific elements? What fits within your budget?

Once you have an established budget, you can begin designing your kitchen. Many people choose to use a designer to help with this. If you would like to do this, you can find many people who are willing to help. In fact, many of your large home improvement stores offer this service as well as providing the needed materials. If you would like to do the designing, by all means you can and should!

You will find that in the beginning it can be boring taking the measurements and looking at different materials. But, when it begins to come together it will become fun. Here are some things that you will want to think about:

* Wall coverings, painting, wallpaper, tile

* Flooring

* Appliance, replacing or keeping the old

* Cabinetry

* Countertops

* Lighting and ventilation

* Windows and window treatment

* Accessories

When designing a kitchen, you can change any or all of these features. The way they work together is completely up to you. Look for color patterns and appliances with the same texture and color as well. Some choose stainless steal while others enjoy fabulous colors.

To make your kitchen remodeling go as smoothly as possible, it is wise to use carpenters, plumbers, and design specialists to get it done right. A small difference of an inch in the materials can cause all sorts of problems.

In any cases, the kitchen that you design should be usable to you and your family. It should make you happy to be in the kitchen, thinking of the memories that have gone by or those that will happen. It is the foundation of many homes and therefore should be a great room all around!

Carpet Stain Removal - Red Dye

Posted:28 February, 2005 by admin

If you have ever gotten a red dye stain on a carpet you know that they can be extremely difficult to remove. They might even seem impossible to remove. In this article you will learn how to deal with red dye stains.

The first step in red dye removal is to try a basic spotter. Get a bottle of your favorite general spotter and a white terry cloth towel. Spray the solution on the rag and dab it on the spot. Keep dabbing the spot until all of the stain is removed or until no more red dye transfers to the towel. Remember not to scrub as this could damage the carpet pile. If the spot is gone, consider yourself lucky. If it is still present resist the urge to play chemist and do not use any other products. The more you unsuccessful attempts you make at cleaning the spot, the harder it will be to remove.

If the stain is still there you will need to obtain some red dye remover. There are several brands available. Go to your local home improvement store and purchase one. If you have a carpet cleaning supply store in your area you can find better products there. Read and follow the instructions on the product you buy. Generally you will spray the spot with the dye remover and then place a damp towel over the spot. You will then place an iron set on the lowest steam setting over the towel. Keep moving the iron and do not let it sit in one spot too long. it may take a few applications to completely remove the spot. When you are done, use your general spotter to clean the dye remover from the carpet.

That is all there is to it. Just remember to be patient and use the right chemical for the job. Also take the time to read the product. Follow the directions and read the cautions as these products can be hazardous. Good luck.

Get Creative With Your Home Security System

Posted:27 February, 2005 by admin

A 21st century Home Security System can be so much more than just a device that calls for help in case of an emergency. In fact, it can be a great help in everyday life. What about an SMS message when the liquor cabinet is opened at 3 AM and the only one home is your teenage son?

The purpose of a home security system used to be pretty straightforward: keep the bad guys out. That hasn’t changed. A home security system that is connected to this day and age still protects your family and your property. But it is much more sophisticated than that. It even allows you to get creative. Probably beyond your imagination.

Say you add an additional sensor to your liquor cabinet. A 21st century home security system can be configured to send out an e-mail or SMS message when the cabinet is opened. Not addressed to your monitoring service of course, but straight to you. How would that make you feel when your teenage kids are home alone?

Custom Notification Rules
It’s just one example. It isn’t hard to think of more. The medicine cabinet for example. Or the closet or cabinet where you keep fire arms. All items you would like to keep a close watch on can be protected with a simple ten dollar sensor that is connected to a 2007 alarm system. When those cabinets are opened, you probably don’t want the police to be alerted. However, you might want to receive an e-mail or SMS message.

To most people with an ordinary home security system, these features may same extraordinary. The truth however is they are not. All it takes is a simple to install add-on device. It upgrades your existing home security system straight into the 21st century.

The ‘big secret’ behind this all is the fact that these add-ons communicate over three redundant connections - broadband, cellular and phone line, whatever is available in case of an emergency or whatever is needed to perform a configured action – like sending a SMS message.

Did Your Daughter Arrive Home Safe?
Want another example for every day use? What about getting an e-mail or a SMS message when your daughter has arrived home safely from school? Or a message that your neighbor has just fed your cat or walked your dog while you’re on vacation? It’s all just a matter of creating personal (dis)arm codes and custom notification rules for everyday events that suit you and your lifestyle. Sounds complicated? It isn’t. All it takes is a few clicks of a mouse.

Make Things Easier
Even if you don’t have children, pets, liquor or guns – upgrading your existing home security system into the 21st century is something to consider. The ‘bad guys’ you are trying to keep out, are aware that your security system depends on a thin copper wire. All they have to do is find it, cut it and your property is theirs. Unless of course, your home security system switches to a broadband or cell phone connection the moment your landline gets cut.

Upgrade Your Alarm System
The Good News is that these new types of configurable systems are now available. The even better news: a company called uControl introduced an add-on ‘link’ that makes your existing home security system communicate over broadband, cellular or phone line – whatever is available. It is compatible with 95 percent of all alarm systems already installed in U.S. homes today. Therefore there is no need to throw away your existing system. Just upgrade it and your house and family are protected better then ever.

Installing the uControl link is easy. And it’s even easier to configure the uControl link to fit into your lifestyle. All it takes is few clicks of a mouse and you are ready to receive an e-mail or SMS message when your daughter arrives home from school.

Peace of Mind
Unlike the traditional companies like ADT or Brinks, uControl does not charge you an extra fee for communicating over broadband, cellular and phone line. In fact, they provide more security and more peace of mind for the same dollar.

Alarm System: Wireless Remotes

Posted:27 February, 2005 by admin

WIRELESS ALARM SYSTEM REMOTES

These remotes are also known as “key fobs” or “4 button key chains”. They are wonderful to have in addition to your keypad as you can turn your alarm on or off without going to the keypad. You still need a keypad to perform most of the other operations of your system such as seeing what zone is opened or has been violated after an alarm. The typical programming for a 4 button key chain would be as follows.

1 System Armed. (On)

2 System Disarmed (Off)

3 System Armed –Stay (Motion detectors bypassed)

4 Police Panic (Siren sounds)

Your buttons on your key fob can be programmed to do other functions. For example grandma can have one that calls for medical help if she presses her button.

These key chains and pendants are wonderful for many reasons. You are most importantly attached to you alarm if you are within the specified range from your system, (anywhere from 250 to 1000 feet) based on the quality of the transmitter and receiver. If you get out of your car in your driveway and are approached, you can call for help and sound your sirens with the press of a button. An employee leaving work can call for help from the parking lot.

You can also use your Key fob at night to turn your alarm on and keep your keys on your night- stand, so that you have a panic button at the ready if needed. Your key chain also allows you to arm your main floor motion detector at night. If you need to go into the protected area for a late night glass of milk or something, just press a button to disarm and rearm upon your return. (Make sure there are no other occupants that will roam the house before using this feature)

If you have groceries and or children to carry, you can turn your alarm off without going to the keypad. If your garage has a motion detector in it you can turn your alarm off before opening the overhead door.

If you have a hardwired system you need a wireless receiver to add any wireless device such as a remote key fob to your system. Once you have a receiver it will take and process signals from multiple devices, this gives you the flexibility to add equipment later without the expense of additional receivers.

The Latest Furniture Trends Today

Posted:27 February, 2005 by admin

Furniture trends today are not so different than furniture trends yesterday. Changes are never dramatic. The latest furniture trends are mainly about accessorizing than making complete changes.

Due to economic downturns, trends in furniture and design today are conservative. Nothing much has changed; there have been no dramatic new statements made, no bold changes in the philosophy of color and style. This basically means that all the current trends in furniture today remain essentially the same, with only some new arrivals.

What is the overriding style statement in furniture trends today can be summarized in one word: global. Taking into account influences from all over the world, furniture trends today are more flexible than ever, and also, much more simple. Taking international influences from every continent - Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, America - furniture trends today speak an international language.

The international trends in furniture express themselves in the use of every global trend from country sophistication to tropical luxury. Animal prints have been back in style for a while now. From leopard to cheetah, skin looks can be used with antique and contemporary furniture pieces. Anything goes here.

Leather has always been and still is one of the most popular choices for upholstery, and these days, leather is especially stylish when used in collaboration with fabric. Today, leather is often used in smaller doses, as an accent on wooden and fabric pieces.

In all cases, furniture trends today support the mixed media expression. Wood is mixed with fabric, or metal, or even glass. But mixed expression transcends the classical. You’ll find that every sort of exotic material - stone, coconut shells, crushed bamboo, even fossil stones - can be used.

Furniture trends today are subtle, but exciting style statements.

Power Tool Safety

Posted:27 February, 2005 by admin

The very same tools that have made it possible for us to experience tremendous leaps in our productivity and our quality of life, have brought with them new potential problems and hazards. Here we will discuss just a few of these problems…and simple solutions.

Electric powered saws: There are three main types of powered saws, the circular hand saw, the reciprocating saw, and the jig saw. Though all present significant hazards to thoughtless use, the most hazardous one would undoubtedly be the circular saw. The reasons: They are the most widely used, they create the largest amount of potentially harmful byproduct…sawdust, they are prone to kickback (the tendency for the saw to jump back toward the user when it encounters a hard knot in the wood, when it encounters a change in the grain pattern in hardwood, or when the piece being cut is not properly secured), and the extremely high speed of the blade rotation. We can avoid significant problems with theses tools if we THINK! More specifically, the problem of the sawdust generated by the circular saw can be overcome by wearing a simple and very inexpensive dust filtering mask, standing upwind of the cutting action, and keeping your face at least a full arms length from the cutting action. When you consider that most pressure treated wood contains arsenic residue it becomes highly critical that you NOT inhale any of that sawdust.

Although theses rules apply when cutting wood, when cutting metal the potential inhalation problems are increased dramatically. Your lungs may recuperate from a limited amount of real fine sawdust, they will not recuperate from a similar amount of real fine metal dust!

The kickback problem can be minimized by: Thinking ahead and looking over the wood being cut, are there any knots in the cutting path? Is the wood a hardwood, will you be cutting against the grain? Are there any grain pattern changes in the cutting path? Finally, make sure the wood being cut is secured properly with clamps or other holding devices and guide the saw slowly and firmly through its cutting path. Slow down even more when encountering knots or grain pattern changes.

The high blade rotation issue can simply be addressed by keeping all appendages and other body parts out of the path of the rotating blade. When finished do not set the saw down until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating completely! Many a handyman has been rudely surprised when they set a circular saw down before the blade stopped rotating. It could take off seemingly on its own cutting whatever gets in its way!

Power tools are important to the handyman. Used wisely and thoughtfully they are indispensable.

Evaporative Cooler Prices Explained

Posted:26 February, 2005 by admin

Are you interested in evaporative cooler prices? Some people find it curious when they begin their comparison shopping. There’s a wide array of evaporative coolers available which makes the price delta fairly wide. You can pay anywhere from $100 to several thousand dollars for this device. The indoor units are generally more moderately priced than the outdoor models but there is still quite a large price range. An evaporative cooler, often called a swamp cooler can be a great way to cool and humidify your home as well as save considerable amounts of electricity over the price of central air conditioning or a single air conditioning unit.

Why is there such a price delta?

If you want an economical cooler, you will find that they are compact in size and are sometimes portable at around $100 or less. There are quite a few different options including ones with extra bells and whistles including air purification, large water reservoirs and other features as well. Some models can also sometimes be used in the winter time as well as the summer in order to act as a humidifier for your home.

A middle of the road evaporative cooler might be around $200 to under $1000 but holds more water and might cover a larger amount of square footage. There might be a larger blower wheel which can create higher strength and more cooling power.

Larger or higher powered swamp coolers can be over $1000.00 and even well above that depending on a few factors such as the square footage, fan strength, water tank and number of absorbent cooling pads. Some units can blow a significant amount of air and cool a vast area.

Are there commercial grade solutions?

There are large or commercial grade evaporative coolers that can cool a very large building or even an outdoor area. Some of these units are priced for several thousand dollars but have many features that make it an enticing proposition. Not only is there a significant cost savings but some high end units have more durable materials that don’t require as much maintenance, and have longer warranty periods. Features like durable plastic fans and cellulose absorbent water pads can mean that there’s not the chance of rust or corrosion that you face with lower end models.

If you do a bit of homework when making a choice for your evaporative water cooler or swamp cooler, it can result in better performance for you. Taking into consideration the area you need to cool and what other features you want as well as the amount of maintenance you are willing to perform on the unit can help you determine which end of the scale you want to make your purchase in.
