Why You Need a Patio Awning

Posted:31 March, 2005 by admin

Patio awnings do a dual job. They shade you from unwanted rays of the sun and add beauty and value to any home. Awnings come in a wide array of colors, fabrics and sizes so your selection is vast if you are thinking of buying one. If you already have an awning, then a little wash and air dry can bring back the vibrant colors and make it look new again.

Awnings can come with automatic openers, electric openers, or manual. The framing is constructed so that your awning will give you years of comfort before it has to be replaced. If you are thinking of purchasing an awning, measure first before you purchase.

Measure the length of your deck and make sure you have at least eight feet of clearance to mount it. Watch for anything that may be in the way such as lighting, gutters or down spouts. Measuring out eight feet should cover the part of your patio that needs to be shielded from the sun. Awnings measure from five feet to thirteen feet although the most size used is eight feet, which is big enough to take care of the standard requirements.

When purchasing your patio awnings you will find many different kinds. You need to take time to inform yourself which one would be best suited to your needs.

Awnings help in many ways to reduce the heat inside the home as well as outside by keeping any patio door shaded from the hot sun. It is like adding a new room to your home. It does not only protect you from the sun, but also from any inclement weather that Mother Nature might send your way.

Regardless of your choice, an awning is a wonderful investment with a guarantee of letting you spend long and enjoyable hours on your patio. If you are entertaining and it starts to rain a little it doesn’t matter you are dry and comfy sitting in your favorite chair.

Roofing Basics

Posted:31 March, 2005 by admin

Roofing is something that every home owner needs to know something about, after all it is about the roof over your head and is directly linked to the quality of life in your house. Looking for anew roof for a house can be an exhausting work, the research for the materials and the negotiations with the professionals, even before any material has been purchased and any work begun you may find yourself giving up the idea, just for the sheer scale of the project and what it involves.

If you are looking to get a new roof on your house, you will have to think about the way you are going to get the work done, many people think that they can do the work themselves only to later discover that they cant, and than they are in a desperate situation that needs urgent help, which usually costs them much more than if they would have planed things right. When you are thinking of getting a new roof for your house, chances are that you will not want to go at it alone. Not only is the construction dangerous, but it is hard to select the correct roofing materials and to construct it in a structurally-reliable manner.

There are, of course, advantages to getting a professional to do the roofing for you. The number one advantage of hiring a roofing contractor is that you will be able to get expert feedback on what materials you need, for both aesthetic and practical reasons. If you have any questions about damage to your roof, or anything to do with style, you will be able to speak with your roofing contractor. Another advantage of using a roofing contractor is that you are ensured of having the job done right the first time, there should be maximal efficiency to the roofing contractor work, allowing you minimal time of work on your house and the absolute minimum discomfort for you and your family while the work is being done.

Not only can they do what you request of them, but your roofing contractor may also be able to locate any problem areas that may be arising. This is very important because if you can get these areas repaired early on, you may be able to avoid a lot of damage to your home down the road. It is very important to get a roofing job done as professionally and as thoroughly as possible, since most people do not go about changing their roof every few years you may want to think of all the aspects of this project before you sign any agreement or buy any material.

Naturally you should find out if the contractor you are going to hire is the right person for the work so you may want to ask them for some references. The best way that this can be done is asking what other houses in your neighborhood that they have worked on, look at the work, listen to other peoples experience and that would make your decision easier. This way you can go by and see what the roof looks like, and also ask these people what they thought of the level of service that they received. By checking out potential contractors up front, you will be able to avoid running into problems after they have already started the job.

TV Wall Mount and Widescreen and Flat Screen and

Posted:31 March, 2005 by admin

Not long ago a TV was a TV, just a television set. Yes, there where sets with some extra features, stand alone speakers for example, but it was easy to pick your choice. Now you have a lot more options to take into consideration and a number of terms to learn. So let us see what kind of guide lines we can give you.

TV Wall Mount - These TV:s sell more and more but are considerably more expensive. They are called TV wall mount as they are so thin, 2-5 inches, or 5-10 centimeters. The picture is completely flat and the set should be connected to digital systems. The number one reason to buy a TV wall mount is the fact that it does not require any space on the floor.

Today you can choose one of two techniques, LCD and plasma screens. The LCD technique is best for screens up to 30 inches and they cost from just under $1,000 up to $3,000 USD. An LCD screen can also be connected to your computer, no problem.
One disadvantage can be on some screens, there is a delay in showing the picture, which can be rather annoying with fast movements like in football and other sports.

The plasma screens works better for really big screens, 32-50 inches. The prices are coming down but often start around $2,000 USD. The internet is of course the best place to start your search for a TV wall mount, LCD or Plasma. Also remember that the prices given here are probably higher than what you can find out there!

The TV techniques are developing fast, like the computer industry, so if you are not in a hurry, wait and the prices will drop. Especially for a TV Wall Mount. It is always more expensive when the technique is new.

A great place to start your search for a TV wall mount is through consumer reports. They give you unbiased reviews of the best TV wall mounts out there.

If you want to experience the best of a sports game, nature or action movie, as you almost where there, you are probably ready to spend a lot of money . Then you will of course choose the wide-screen and home movie equipment with a plasma or projection-TV.

There are some practical things to consider for a TV wall mount. How much is the weight of your particular TV model? Can you mount it on the wall in a safe way? Make sure that any mount that you consider is able to comfortably handle the weight of your TV. You will need a strong, sturdy equipment that can handle the weight. If the wall itself is the weak point you should perhaps look for another alternative than wall mount. Or secure the equipment to the floor or the ceiling.

Many TV models have specially made equipment for a wall mount. You can also find good universal mounts available.
It used to be that the only wall mounts were a set of metal brackets that mounted to the wall and the TV hung on those brackets. Which made it harder to move the screen. Now you can find flexible wall mount units that actually let you extend the TV from the wall and turn it to adjust the viewing angle too.

In the ads for TV sets you will always get a long list of features. Don´t care about that list for a start. It is the picture on the screen that is of most importance. If the picture is bad that is the thing that will be most annoying. Use your eyes and compare several types of TV sets in a shop even if the environment is light and very different from your home. Bring your favorite picture to the shop and ask to have it shown. Now you can get a better understanding of the quality of the screen, the colours etc.

The sound is easy to forget. But a bad sound can destroy the most wonderful picture. It is great if you can listen to the sound more privately or try to be there when there are few customers.
Stereo sound is the most common but is not necessarily automatically hifi quality. You can often get a better sound if you connect the TV sound to your own equipment or put up extra speakers.

A TV wall mount will in the coming years be the most sold TV equipment. The prices will go down and the weight will be reduced considerably. They will be easy to mount and with great sound and picture. To put it simple, it is the future.

Buying a Home Theater Receiver

Posted:31 March, 2005 by admin

Buying a receiver is one of the most important decisions you’re going to have to
make when building your home theater. The receiver has a number of functions
including; connecting and switching audio sources; connecting and switching video
sources; decoding surround sound formats; amplifying an audio signal and sending
it to your speakers; tuning in to radio stations; and acting as the interface between
you and your home theater.

The first thing to think about is whether you want a receiver at all or would you be
better off buying a separate decoder, amplifier, and tuner?

Despite being a more expensive route - not to mention the extra space needed -
separates do have some advantages. You can pick and choose your own
combination of components, can upgrade each component individually and won’t
lose all the functions if one piece develops a fault. On top of that, having each
electronic component in a separate box does improve sound quality when compared
with having them all on one circuit board.

However, the separates route is more expensive, more complicated and needs more
space than buying a receiver. And for most people its uneccessary. Today’s receivers
do a very good job in all of their functions.

So what should should you look out for when buying a receiver? The first thing is to
make sure that it has ll the inputs you need for the equipment you need to connect
to it. Sounds obvious, but its very easy to overlook. As a mimimum it should have
digital audio inputs (optical and co-axial) for Dolby Digital and/or DTS. It should
also have analogue audio inputs for CD player, set-top box and possibly DVD-Audio
or Super Audio CD player (the last two currently don’t have digital outputs in order
to make it less easy to pirate CDs).

You should also consider whether you want to route all your video sources such as
TV, DVD player, and games console through your receiver. Doing so means you can
switch between sources from one controller, very easily. But if you want to do this
you’ll need to make sure the receiver you’re interested in has enough video inputs.
These could be S-Video or component inputs are best, or if you’re in Europe, Scart.
You should also make sure the video output from the receiver is of high quality, so
again, it should be S-Video, component or Scart.

If you can test a receiver before you buy, its worth comparing the quality of a video
signal from a DVD player when its connected directly to a display and comparing it
with when its connected via the receiver. There shouldn’t be any noticeable
difference in quality.

The power rating of the amplifier is also important. The bigger the room you have
for your home theater, the more power you’ll need. And makes sure that the power
rating is quoted in Watts per channel - the last thing you want is to get home with
your 100Watt receiver and discover that its power is split between eight speakers in
you 7.1 set-up. It’s impossible to specify how powerful your amplifier should be,
but if your home theater is in a reasonable-sized room, as opposed to an aircraft
hanger, 100Watts per channel should be fine.

Finally, don’t forget the remote control. It’s the key interface between you and the
reciever and you’ll spend a lot of time using it. So make sure it’s comfortable and
straightforward to use. The last thing you want is to have to spend ages wading
through on-screen menus to get what you want.

Kitchen Remodeling: First Step

Posted:30 March, 2005 by admin

It’s true with any remodeling project, of course, but a well-designed, detailed plan is especially important when it comes to remodeling your kitchen. Regardless of whether you’re planning to do it yourself or will be using the help of a professional, your first step will be working out a plan that will address three main kitchen criteria: food preparation, storage, and clean-up.

In the 1950s, and up until a relatively sort time ago, kitchens were designed in a triangular pattern, with the three points of the triangle being the stove, refrigerator, and sink. It was considered the most efficient set up at a time when most women stayed home during the day and worked by themselves, making the family’s meals from scratch.

Of course, that’s no longer the case, so kitchens have evolved to match people’s cooking habits, since most women now work outside of the home, share cooking duties with their husbands or significant others, prepare only a few meals from scratch. To reflect those changes, modern kitchens are designed with multiple work areas, including islands, to allow more than one person to work in the kitchen at one time. Many kitchens even include two sinks, in the island and on the traditional countertops, to further facilitate the division of labor.

Since nearly twice as much storage room is required in modern kitchens, cabinets become a major issue when planning a remodel. You’ll want to decide on the types of surfaces, colors, materials, and styles that match both your preference and budget.

The same is true with countertops. They should be durable and attractive, yet well within your price range. One thing to consider is that expensive surfaces such as granite or marble may be extremely durable, but they are very difficult for the average do-it-yourselfer to work with.

When it comes to flooring, modern kitchens are now generally done in vinyl, as opposed to the linoleum that was most commonly found in 50s kitchens. Whether you use sheets or tiles, you’ll have a wide variety of styles and textures to choose from. Wood floors have also been making a comeback in both high end and moderately priced kitchens.

Kitchen sinks can be found in cast iron, stainless steel and plastic, and come in many styles and colors, as do the faucets to fill them. Whether you choose a single or double sink, with one handle or two on your faucet will again be limited only by your taste and budget.

A similar variety of will be available in stoves, microwaves, range hoods, refrigerators, and freezers. It’s up to you to decide what works best for you, without breaking your budget, but regardless of what you choose, it all begins with sitting down and working out a detailed plan of what you want in your new kitchen.

Painting and Decorating Tile

Posted:30 March, 2005 by admin

Ceramic tile can be beautiful and elegant. But it can also be bland and uninspired. If you want to add a little color or creativity to your tile, here’s how!

Remember to clean your tile and let it dry before you begin any project.

1. Seal both tile and surrounding grout with a water-based floor varnish.

Ask your home improvement retailer for suggestions about a good water-based floor varnish for your area.

2. Brush paint primer on both tile and grout.

Let it dry for at least 12 hours before you begin painting.

3. With an artist’s brush, paint your pattern with latex paint.

Simple designs are best. You can use stencils or, if you are brave, try painting your own original design directly on the tile. Let the tile dry before sealing.

4. Seal the tiles with two coats of water-based varnish.

Let the tile dry between coats.

Decorating your old tile can be easy and fun. Now, anyone have a great idea for rescuing an old bathtub? (Without making it a backyard planter, that is!)

All About Kitchen Sinks

Posted:30 March, 2005 by admin

When you are redecorating a kitchen, choosing the right kitchen sink is an important part of this major project. There are many considerations to think about, such as decorating style, what use you put your kitchen to, such as a gathering place or whether you are a gourmet cook. You will want to choose a sink of long lasting materials that will not give you any trouble over the years. Features such as built in cutting boards, separate spray arms or double sinks can make cooking and cleaning in your kitchen a lot easier. There is also the issue of energy efficiency to consider, since water shortages do occur, and it is always a good idea to keep down the costs of all your utilities, including water. If there are children in the home, you may want to have safety features such as a hot water monitor installed. Luckily, there is such a broad range of kitchen sinks to choose from that you can meet all of your needs in terms of the design you like to complement the room plus the features you want to make your time in the kitchen easier and more efficient. There are also similar varieties in terms of bathroom sinks, with hundreds of designs that will go with just about any decor in a bathroom yet are practical and suit your unique needs.

In your kitchen, you can go with the classic style of stainless, which is easy to care for, unbreakable, and easy to clean, but has a more modern and severe touch. Ceramic sinks offer more in terms of style, and whether you want the sink to be in your kitchen, bathroom or powder room, you may want to choose a sink with colors or unusual designs. Add to the variety of styles the fact that you can mix and match fixtures such as faucets and sprays, with gold or porcelain trim so that you can achieve a luxurious look. But if you are trying to work within a budget, you will also be able to find many simple but nice looking styles and designs that will be within your price range.

The kitchen is often a focal point in a room, (and certainly one of the busiest spots, since you use it before meals for preparation and after meals for cleanup) and choosing the right one can make your kitchen look stunning. You want to make sure the sink complements the counter tops, the paint or wallpaper colors and the other appliances in the kitchen.

Today’s choice in kitchen sinks allows you to play around with designs that look best in your kitchen while still allowing you to have all of the practical features you need for your lifestyle. That should be the definition of the perfect sink- it does everything for you in terms of style, design, functionality and practicality. Even if you are not doing a complete kitchen remodel ling, you will be amazed at how much a new, well chosen sink can do to update your kitchen.

Buying a Flagpole

Posted:29 March, 2005 by admin

The most expensive flagpoles cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, as in the case of some of the more monumental poles. At the high end of the usual spectrum, however, an eighty-foot aluminum commercial pole might cost $10,000. Shorter and residential poles are more financially feasible.

Flagpoles are usually sold as kits, with all the hardware included. For example, a fifteen-foot aluminum residential pole with an external halyard system costing $500 would probably include a flag; a ball or “finial” for the tip of the flagpole; a pulley system or “truck assembly”; cleats (the handles around which the rope is wrapped to lock the flag in place); rope or “halyard” with snap hooks to keep it from clanging noisily against the pole; a flash collar for giving the base a finished look; a groundsleeve; and easy-to-follow assembly instructions.

Internal halyard systems are more expensive, because of the extra assembly time it takes to produce one.

Fiberglass flagpoles are a bit more expensive than aluminum, because they show less wear and tear than aluminum. And bronze is even more expensive, because it is in lower demand. Finally, steel tends to be the most expensive, because it is practically invincible.

There are plenty of flagpole dealers to choose from. You can find one by looking up flagpoles in your local yellow pages, or by doing an online search.

Let Your Wall Art Define You

Posted:29 March, 2005 by admin

Wall art can be defined by family portraits or historical paintings adorned on the walls of a home. In a home with young children, wall art can even be described as crayola mishaps. Wall art depends upon the personality of the home and in most cases, the homeowner’s preference. Whatever wall art that you prefer, here are some reasons why your home’s wall art will transform your house into a home.

Wall art sets the tone of a room- From pastel shades to bold colors your home wall art will emphasize the feel and tone for a room. A playroom might not feature Victorian style art, but rather colorful artwork, or even candid photos of the children. Likewise, Victorian paintings would be more suitable in a formal dining room. Wall art displaying food items would obviously work best in a kitchen. Imagine the cravings you will develop at the sight of a picture depicting a fruit basket or a retro burger drive-in!

Wall art reflects upon a memory- The family trip to Disneyland is captured by the 8 x 10 photo shot of your 5-year old son shaking Donald Duck’s … um … wing, or a 5 x 7 photo in your office features your baby daughter’s big smile of her first teeth coming in. As your children grow, these family moments become a valued reflection of their childhood. The photos on the walls in your home will document the priceless memories of the family milestones.

Wall art brings life to a room- Bringing these outside creations into your home is usually a beautiful addition to your home décor. For every season, and in every region, there are various flowers and plants associated with those areas and times of the year. The fall foliage, the summer sunflowers, the snow-capped mountains can all be represented in the home through an artist’s paintings or an actual preservation of the natural creation. The orchid lei that you were welcomed with on your vacation to Hawaii can be preserved in a frame on your bedroom wall.

After a full day of absorbing the scenic views of the beautiful outside creations, can you imagine coming home to bare walls at each corner? The wall art of your home will fill the void of blank space and add presence, life and a human touch to your home. Wall art doesn’t have to be the most expensive painting auctioned off from the art gallery. It can be as simple and priceless as your child’s artwork from school. Wall art can be anything that you want to display. Most importantly, let your wall art be a definition of you and you will feel at home.
