Purchasing Great Loft Beds

Posted:31 August, 2005 by admin

Loft beds can be purchased easily, if you know what to look for and you know where to buy from. There are many benefits of purchasing them, too. For starters, you can use loft beds to gain additional room in your home. By placing your bed up, onto the wall, you can place another underneath. Or, you can place your furniture or other items underneath, using the room as you see fit. With lots of room in your bedroom, you can accommodate more people and have more functional space. Of course, your child (or even you) will find this to be a fun way to sleep too!

Where You Purchase Matters

When it comes to purchasing a loft bed, it is important to consider where and who you are purchasing from. Since it will hang from the wall, the quality of the product is essential. You need the bed to be stable, safe and secure so that you don’t have any problems with it falling or not being stable enough for you to actually use it. With those things in consideration, consider the various companies and people you are buying from. Some like to purchase used beds, which is fine as long as you insure that it is a safe bed all the same.

In addition, you should realize that a loft bed purchase will require you to do some assembly work. It is important to note that you could possibly build your own loft beds for your home. You can even use part of your twin bed to make it happen. But, you don’t have to go through all of that work. Instead, consider the purchase of a kit, which will allow you to create a bed that’s off the ground but still as safe as if it was being on the ground. That’s important to remember: safety and security. No matter if you aer building your own from scratch or purchasing a kit to assemble, you need to insure you follow close directions. Sometimes, when you purchase these beds from a local furniture store, you can have them come to your home and set it up for you.

Should You Invest In One?

When considering the benefits of a loft bed, you need to think about the quality and function that it will add to the room. Most commonly, these are found in dorm rooms where people are in need of all the room that they can get. By raising the bed off the ground, you create additional space that will allow you to place a computer desk or even a chair underneath the bed.

Loft beds can make good investments. For those that are looking for a loft bed that will fill their needs, consider the benefits that you can get from the variety of sizes and styles that are available. You can easily invest in these affordable beds and keep your floor space to yourself. You may find that they make for the perfect type of bed, with all of the comfort and a lot of the fun, too.

Patio Doors As A Means Of Bringing The Outdoors In

Posted:31 August, 2005 by admin

Experiencing the outdoors while you are actually inside the comforts of your house can be a very relaxing experience, and you can make this happen by installing patio doors in your home.

With patio doors, the beauty of the garden outside can be appreciated from within your home. This is particularly useful for days when the weather does not permit you to stay out, or when perhaps you yourself are not capable of staying out for a long time. Relaxing in a lounge chair right by your patio doors is almost as good as being in the garden itself.

There are two common kinds of patio doors to choose from: the traditional French doors, or the more contemporary sliding glass doors.

French doors have a more formal appearance, and are sometimes also called swing doors. This is because they swing open, thus requiring more space for them to open. If you do have a lot of space in your patio, French doors are a good choice because you can actually swing them open as wide as you want to let more of the backyard into your house. French doors can cost quite a bit but they do offer a very classy feel to your home.

Sliding glass doors, on the other hand, do not cost quite as much. Homeowners with more contemporary tastes prefer these kinds of patio doors. Most sliding glass doors are completely made of glass and even when you shut them, you can still enjoy looking at your backyard.

Whether you choose to install French doors or modern sliding doors, there are plenty of designs of patio doors to pick from. You can select the material you want to use - whether it is wood, metal, fiberglass, or some other kind of material.

Most homepatiodeck.com/Articles/Patio_Tables.php patio doors are available in standard sizes that will fit your area, but you can also have them customized if you want a more unconventional size or design for your patio doors. Usually, sliding glass doors are easier to install because they have already been assembled in the shop, and all you have to do is stick them in where you want them.

Once you install your patio doors, you can have access to your backyard like you never have before. The beauty of the natural environment will become a part of your living room, and the smells and sounds of nature penetrate through your home and revitalize you every single day.

As an added bonus, besides being just an entryway to the patio and backyard, you can turn your patio doors into a focal point of the room. Adding simple but elegant drapes around your patio doors will serve to frame a natural living artwork which is your own backyard.

Tips to Complete Your Home Decor

Posted:31 August, 2005 by admin

The process of decorating your home can be both arduous and enjoyable. But just arranging the furniture in the room and adding the essentials to your home is not enough. Chances are you realize that your home still looks unfinished. Your home decor may lack little details and touches, but you can’t define what exactly is missing. Use these tips to complete any newly decorated room with your personal style.

Home Decor Tells a Lot about the Owner

Home decor can be a tricky process. You want to make sure it shows your style, flair, and family heirlooms without looking overdone. Plants and flowers are a great way to dress up a bland room in no time. You don’t need anything expensive or dramatic; you can simply add a potted plant on a side table, or find a wonderful silk plant for a high shelf. Adding greenery of any type will spice up a room.

Your favorite things gathered from around the house can give your home decor a very personal touch. It could be a family heirloom, a well worn book, sporting equipment, or even an old teapot that you don’t use anymore. Group your items in an attractive collection on a bare shelf, or adorn a bookcase with a few of your favorite knick knacks to personalize your home decor.

A Work in Progress

The best part of home decor is that your room doesn’t have to be put together in one day. It can take a week, a month, or a year to find the perfect piece that fits in. Have fun shopping at yard sales or flea markets to find a one-of-a-kind piece that you adore. Home decor is a way of showing off your personality, your interests, and your passions in life.

Color Is Essential to Home Decor

Color can be a wonderful way to dress up your home decor. Again, your personality can be shown through your favorite color added to different pieces of the room. Avoid overusing the color, though. Little accents along the way to pull a room together is what you need; stick to one or two hues you like and run with them.

Adding More Life to Home Decor

Your home decor can become even livelier with nice pictures of your family throughout the house. Using pictures of the loves of your life is never old-fashioned and can match almost any type of home decor. An important tip to remember is that you should use the same color and style of frames so that it doesn’t look too eclectic - unless that is the style you are going for. It is generally more pleasing to the eye to have a collection of silver frames, or another style that coordinates well.

One important thing to remember is – home decor should accent a room and be subtle, not overwhelming. No matter what type of home decor you choose, keep the consistency and add items that contribute to the general style of the room.

Marble is naturally porous so it’s easy to have wine and dirt stains damaging its porous surface. To date, there is no way you can seal its surface efficiently.

Some marble sealants end up masking the stone’s texture, making it feel like plastic. They may yellow after some years and discolor the floor. So what is one to do? Here’s a great tips and advice on choosing an alternative to marble flooring: terrazzo.

Terrazzo is a close marble alternative, it is made from marble chips randomly mixed with an epoxy binder.

Once they harden, the surface is ground down to a smooth durable finish that resembles natural marble but without its weaknesses. Some manufacturers leave the tiles to cure for a week or so in steam rooms, which promote all the best qualities of the binder.

Installing them is best done during major refurbishment as it is specialized work. Terrazzo tiles, which are thinner and lighter than in-situ terrazzo, can be laid with less disruption and give similar effect.

Terrazzo comes in many patterns and colors, involving mono and mixed marble as well as random glass chips. The size of the marble chips used – from large marble chunks to tiny marble pebbles – also creates interesting patterns.

It used to be very popular as a flooring material in the 1950s and 1960s, so speckled marble patterns in grey or rust can look very retro.

The trend now is to mix in glass or pearlescent chips to add a glamorous glitter underfoot that is ideal for halls and living rooms.

Repairing and replacing terrazzo should invariably be left to experienced contractors, especially when large areas are concerned.

Sauna Steam Rooms

Posted:30 August, 2005 by admin

Lazing around in a sauna steam room is equivalent to escaping the stressful real life and sighing in the luxury of warm, relaxing steam. Sitting in a sauna room provides relief from the fatigue resulting from the active daily life and tiring, time-consuming needs of family and work. An hour in this healing room will leave you energetic and ready to face the world once again.

Steam saunas are usually designed for custom showers. However, they may be installed in any place that can be enclosed to keep the steam inside. The ideal height for the ceiling of your steam sauna is seven feet. A good steam sauna will provide a hundred percent humidity in the cubicle. Experts design the seat away from the ceiling so that the condensed water droplets do not drip over you.

The sauna heater works in tandem with a steam generator that is guided by a digital control panel. The heater is generally kept inside the room. A low temperature will result in high humidity in the room; similarly, a high temperature means having low humidity in the room. Once the bathing cycle is complete, the control panel turns on the heater to dry up the place. The optimal temperature inside the sauna room is between 160 and 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

Steam saunas are generally sold as complete rooms, either in kit form or as assembled units. Cedar wood is one of the popular choices for sauna rooms, as it doesn’t get heated up, feels cool upon touching, and can be washed clean with water. Besides this, cedar wood resists staining and doesn’t splinter easily, thus providing a smooth and clean place to spread on. Installing waterproof speakers in your steam sauna room will add musical flavor to an already soothing atmosphere. While installing your steam sauna room, make sure your unit has automatic back flush and drainage of steam. This will stop any lime or chemical build-ups. Ask for installation assistance and inquire about repair services before you decide to purchase the unit.

Kitchen Renovation Ideas

Posted:30 August, 2005 by admin

Over the years the kitchen has gained popularity as the central, most important room in any home. It enjoys, in most cases a round the clock patronage, starting from a very early morning breakfast to a late night snack. The kitchen is a loyal witness to any drama in life that unfolds in every home whether preparing an important meal for a client or surprising a loved one on a special occasion; or a weekend dinner specially made for the grandchildren. So when it comes to planning for a kitchen renovation, there are a lot of things to do and consider so that it will become a room where everybody will feel comfortable and welcome.

First and foremost, set a budget. Decide how much money you are going to spend on your project. To have a budget already set for a specific project will help you decide more easily how far you will go in terms of choosing the materials and design for your kitchen renovation. If possible, price out every item you want to include in your new kitchen, like new appliances, fixtures and accessories. Do not leave anything off your list; as much as possible include even the smallest detail like paints and brushes. There are wide ranges of materials available so you can choose from whichever price range you can afford. Once everything is priced, add 20% onto the cost of the job because you never know when things will go wrong and you suddenly find yourself out of budget.

After all the financing is thought about then you are set to start. Try to have a look at your own existing kitchen. How well do you like it? Is there any part of it that you love and want to retain? Or any part of it that you hate and want to change? Or is there something that you want to add or wish you have? Is the size sufficient enough for your family needs? Or do you need to have a bigger space and more storage? Then think of a style you want for your new kitchen. Taking into consideration the style of your own house and of course your sense of taste. If budget permits you can hire a kitchen design expert who can help you draw out all these things. While still in the planning process it is always necessary to define the space available.

Note any opportunities for space modification. Areas with interesting architectural details should be utilized to their full advantage, as they will accentuate the overall visual interest of the entire room. Today there are a lot of kitchen designs to choose from and in varied themes like old world style, European and American country style, Victorian Kitchens, American Traditional, Shaker style and the list goes on. Choose a design which suits your personality, lifestyle and the style of your house itself. There are at least four basic kitchen layouts than you can choose from and incorporate in your own kitchen.

1. Single-wall Layout: This layout is usually done with small spaces where all the appliances and cabinetry are placed against one wall, where there’s no other place to put it. A full height unit like a refrigerator must be placed at one end while a cooktop should be placed near the sink and never at the end of the run. Otherwise it will create an unsafe environment and at the same time add unnecessary steps to the cooking process.

2. Corridor Layout: A corridor or galley layout is made of two opposing counters which should be at least 42″ apart. This is also a good design layout for small spaces but has the added advantage over the single-wall layout since, the work-triangle principle can be applied here, although this layout sometimes suffers from traffic passing through.

3. L-shaped Layout: An L-shaped layout is usually a more desirable layout for a kitchen with limited space, compared with both the single layout and the corridor layout. The work triangle can be designed in such a way that there will be fewer steps for the cook thus making the cooking experience less arduous. It’s also usually free from traffic snarls compared with the corridor layout. Make sure however, that the counters are not interrupted by the passage door, refrigerator or full length cabinets.

4. U-shaped Layout: The U-shaped layout is by far the most versatile and efficient kitchen layout. If your space and budget can accommodate this type go for it. This type of layout makes the most of the working triangle principle. All the appliances, storage systems and work areas face each other and are directed towards a central point - the kitchen operator.

After deciding on which layout you would like for your kitchen, then it’s time to get down to details. Take into consideration the comfort of the cook. There should be a minimum distance between repetitive chores to save the cook from fatigue therefore adding comfort and pleasure to the entire cooking experience. Lots of pantry storage and pull out drawers for everyday use dishes would be an indispensable part of the kitchen cabinetry. For drawers, the use of full extension drawer slides indicates good quality drawers. This will allow easy access to those hard to reach objects and provides strong and sturdy support for fully loaded and heavy drawers. Consider also the countertop material. Countertop dictates much of the appearance and overall atmosphere of the entire kitchen especially if your kitchen design includes a large uninterrupted counter space. You can choose from a variety of materials like Laminate, Solid surface material sold under such names as Corian, Surrell, Gibraltar etc.., Ceramic tile, Granite and Marble, Stainless steel, Soapstone, Lavastone, Butcher’s Block counters.

A seating area for those who are not actively participating in the cooking process but are there to accompany the cook for lively conversation is an added bonus to any kitchen design. If space is available, adding an island not only creates a good focal point but it also gives an added counter space, a good place for a quick meal or just a place where kids can hang out while mom prepares their favorite meal. The key to a successful kitchen design is the complete understanding of the true needs of the intended user. Once this is achieved, everything else in the design will just follow.

So, are you still fed up with looking at your old worn out kitchen? Then start planning for a renovation now.

Breathing Hazards Found In Your Home

Posted:29 August, 2005 by admin

Most of us have dangerous cleaners in our homes. The worst part of this is these products are designed to make our lives easier. But the health problems caused are far greater than the gains. Not to mention the impact on our fragile environment.

Let’s start by identifying some of the major poisons found in cleaners & their effects. First, lets look at oven cleaners. These contain petroleum-based compounds which are not replaceable. Oven cleaners are among the most caustic substances found in the home.

These products can cause breathing problems such as asthma. I was a childhood asthmatic so I understand fully the effects of household cleaners. These alkalis cause accumulating damage to our bodies. Common symptoms include difficulty breathing & excess fatigue.

The EPA has indicated that indoor pollution may be as high as 20 times the levels outside. This is primarily caused through slow release of gases contained in the petroleum-based cleaners. This can be virtually eliminated using all natural cleaning products that are made with replaceable resources such as essential oils found in our fruits & vegetables.

Another common poison found in home cleaning products is ammonia. It is also a by-product of pet urine. This can cause severe breathing problems such as tightening of chest which causes extremely difficult breathing. Ammonia also causes eye, nose, & throat irritations.

Fortunately, there are natural cleaners today which replace these toxins with products that are effective & do not create any noxious fumes. These can create a safe environment for pets, kids, the elderly, & anyone with respiratory allergies. Not to mention these products are not made from oil which is non-replenishable. Eliminating the toxic cleaners from our homes will help protect our environment with no risk to our health.

Water Leaks

Posted:29 August, 2005 by admin

Thousands of dollars and even much more are wasted because of water leaks every year. Most go undetected – and for long periods of time. Here are some basic guidelines so that you can learn more water leaks and how to protect yourself, your property and investment, your time and money.

Water Meter

Begin by making sure all of your water faucets are turned off and all of your water-using devices like ice makers in freezers and drinking water line in refrigerator doors, etc. Then the first place to research and see if there is any trouble with your water is with your water meter. So grab a pencil and notepad and / or a colored marker and head out to the water meter.

To find your meter, you can look at the front of your building or home. Note that if you are on a corner, it may be located on the side that faces a street. It could also be by a side lot close to a street behind a sidewalk or hidden by landscaping – so call your water service provider for help, if needed. Regardless of the location, your water meter should be located in side of either a plastic, concrete or meter box that is nearly ground level.

Test for Leaks

Next it’s time to read your water meter, which is similar to reading your car’s odometer. The numbers read from left to right and water usage is measured in cubic feet, referenced as a CCF. And one full sweep of the hand (like a hand going around a clock) represents one CCF which is equivalent to 7.48 gallons.

OK, time to work a little. Look at the meter dial by lifting the meter’s cover, and check to see where the sweep hand is pointing. Take notes on where it is or use your marker to place a tiny mark on the meter’s cover.

Keep the water off. Then note the position of the sweep hand again after your half hour wait. If it is in the same place, great! If not, in all likelihood you have a leak some place. Likewise if your water meter shows a red indicator moving while your water is shut off, you more than likely have a leak.

If You Have a Leak…

You may qualify for a water leak adjustment. Regardless or whether you do or not, contact your water service immediately and report your finding so that someone can come out right away.
