If you live in an area which suffers from hurricanes every now and again, life can be pretty eventful and damage to your home is always a risk. However, there are ways in which you can hurricane proof your home and one of those ways includes purchasing and installing hurricane vinyl shutters.

What Are Hurricane Vinyl Shutters and How Can They Help?

Hurricane vinyl shutters are an excellent way of adding a little extra protection to your home. Vinyl shutters are actually cheaper than wooden shutters and they also last a lot longer too. The fact that they are stronger than wooden shutters means that they are definitely more suited to hurricane proof the home than wooden shutters are.

They help by protecting the wall around them and by mainly protecting the glass in your windows. So, when a hurricane does hit you will not have to worry about any damage to the windows and you can feel a lot safer in your home.

One of the great things about hurricane vinyl shutters is that they come in a variety of different styles in order to suit your individual taste and the style of your home. You can find them online and generally online is one of the best places to look for hurricane shutters as there will be literally hundreds of designs to choose from. Of course you can also find them local to you too but there may not be quite as much choice to choose from.

To find the perfect ones to suit your home, you need to first take in the theme of the home from the outside. Does it have a modern look or does it have a more contemporary one? Of course the main thing that you need to think about is that the shutters are designed to protect your home so generally it does not matter what they look like, just as long as they work.

The best thing about hurricane vinyl shutters is that they are not overly expensive. So, you can protect your home in an affordable way and they will also last for years. What more could you want for you and your home?

Overall it is better to measure the shutters before you purchase them otherwise you will be wasting money. So, measure all of the windows and write down the measurements then you will not have a problem when it comes to purchasing them. Shop around as much as possible to ensure that you get the cheapest prices for you and also ensure that you get them fitted properly too, that way they will be as secure as they can be.

The Beauty Of A Persian Rug Adds Magic To Any Home

Posted:31 January, 2006 by admin

Over the years I have had the pleasure if visiting many countries involved in traditional ‘oriental rug’ making and to collect pieces for my home from these travels. My acquisitions are to me a collection of artistic heritage providing a rich and diverse artistic experience and collection for my family.

The term ‘oriental rug’ can cause some degree of confusion to anyone not familiar with the topic. Literally the term refers to any rug that has been made in any of the orient countries.

In actual practice the term is not so loosely applied and refers to those rugs made in the traditional manner in Persia, Anatolia, Afghanistan, the Caucasus, Baluchistan, Turkestan, China, India, Pakistan, the Balkans and parts of North Africa.

Ancient Persia or Iran as it is now known remains the largest rug producer in the world, with many different regions each producing a slightly different style of rug. Rugs from Iran - ‘Persian Rugs’ have been valued around the world and remain the most popular rugs of all.

Persian rugs are recognized the world over, primarily for their beauty and class even more than their usefulness and long term investment. The fine styles, designs, and classic weaving materials all result in an area rug that is a special life time acquisition.

A traditional antique Persian rug gives unmatched magical beauty in any home. The mysticism of these rugs transforms your home into a palace of bold magical and majestic beauty. My grandchildren can be taken on a magical carpet ride whilst they sit and gaze at the intricate patterns and intense color of many of my rugs gathered from these captivating countries.

Tabriz is the largest city in north-western Iran and has been settled since ancient times. Tabriz’s development evolved from a naturally favored oasis at the foot of the volcano Sahand. Destruction from earthquakes has occurred over the centuries, but at the same time Tabriz has enjoyed a great reputation as the center of oriental culture.

Tabriz is one of the oldest and probably the most prolific carpet-producing centers in the world. The quality in their carpets is generally exceptional, with most on a base of fine cotton, but on occasions the base is pure silk. Typically the pattern in a Tabriz rug is filled with dense floral motifs, large palm fronds, vases and very vivid hunting scenes; the use of medallions and geometric designs are also included.

The classic Tabriz rug was dyed with natural colorants, though in modern day carpets there is a mixture of natural and chemical dyes. A classic or antique Tabriz rug will include dark red and deep blue colors, while the more modern carpets include soft greens, blues, and browns. It is the vibrancy of color that creates the rugs appeal and it is these colors that are responsible for the uniqueness of each rug.

I acknowledge that the owning of a handmade ‘oriental rug’ is not for everyone, but I urge you to not make that decision based on finances, as it is possible to acquire an ‘oriental rug’ to suit the majority of budgets.

A Persian rug is simply put as being awe-inspiring they will certainly enhance any home.

DVD Copy Software Review

Posted:31 January, 2006 by admin

Of the vast number of DVD copying software available on the market, here are some of the very best ones:

The DVD Cloner II is arguably the best DVD copying software currently on the market. The software is a user’s delight, easy to install, uncomplicated and has the ability to produce high quality DVD duplicates. Perhaps the one feature that separates it from the rest of the competing software is that it comes with an integrated CSS decryptor, meaning it can copy DVDs that are copy-protected. Its market price is $39.99.

1Click DVD is a product of LG Software Innovations. As its name suggests, it can copy a DVD movie with a single click. With wonderful customer support and speed, the software is a highly feasible buy. However, unlike the DVD Cloner II, it lacks a CSS decryptor. It has a market price of $59.00.

Clone DVD, a product of DVD X Studios, is another DVD copying software that comes with a CSS decryptor. However, unlike the DVD Cloner II, it cannot copy to CDs and is not very perceptive. On the plus side, it takes just three steps to copy a DVD movie in its entirety - extra footage, menu, etc. It is available in the market for a price of $99.95.

DVD Wizard Pro is a great buy if the user wants to copy games or DVD movies to one DVD disc, provided the original DVD is less than 4.5 GB. It has good features and comes with the ability to copy DVDs to CDs that can be played on certain DVD players. It is one of the more adaptable DVD copying software program on the market. Its market price is $39.95.

Clone DVD, a product of Slysoft, has a decent feature. Like its namesake from the DVD X Studios, it has the ability to copy an entire DVD movie in a few uncomplicated steps. It does not, however, copy to CDs and does not possess a CSS decryptor. Also, it is relatively complicated in comparison to other DVD copying programs. It is available for $39.00.

DVDFab, a product of Fengtae Software, has a user-friendly interface with a sturdy feature. However, it does not have the ability compress large DVDs into one blank disc. It is priced at $39.95.

DVD Duplicator Pro is similar to a DVD Wizard Pro when it comes to copying games and DVD movies. Like the Wizard Pro, it can also copy to CDs, and it has a “live chat” provision that facilitates customer support. DVD Duplicator Pro is priced at $39.95.

InterVideo DVD Copy Platinum is an excellent program for converting DVD movies to different formats like VCD, Divx, or SVCD. However, DVD Copy Platinum does not come with a CSS decryptor and cannot exclude extra material when copying a movie. It is available on the market for $79.99.

ICopyDVDs2 is competent if the user wants to back-up DVD movies to a single disc, provided there is a CSS decryptor. It gives the user the choice to omit or retain bonus material in the DVD. On the flip side, there are cheaper products available with more features. This software has a market price of $49.99.

Underfloor Heating The Benefits

Posted:31 January, 2006 by admin

Underfloor heating does exactly as is states: heats a room - building via a heating system underneath the floor. Underfloor heating is generally thought of as a new innovation, but it has been used for centuries in different parts of the world. It is suitable for all types of property, whether residential or commercial, and can be easily linked to an existing heating system.

The advantages to using underfloor heating are:
• An even heat distribution can create a more comfortable living environment: the feet are kept warm, the head is cooler and there aren’t any cold or hot spots in the room, as often associated with other heating systems.
• Energy efficient: with good insulation, the room thermostat can be set 2 – 3°C lower than a room heated by radiators. Research has shown that when the feet are warm, the overall temperature of the room can be reduced. This can result in a saving of approximately 15 - 60% on fuel bills.
• Improved indoor air quality: reduction of dust circulation and an increase in the relative level of humidity by approximately 12%. Consequently this can reduce environmental triggers for asthma suffers.
• Freedom for innovative interior design: no ugly radiators and pipes give more space and freedom for the interior design of any building. This benefit of underfloor heating is of particular importance when an historical building needs to be heated, without modern utilities being visible.
• Easy to install and cost effective: underfloor heating can be fitted as a DIY project, or by professionals.
• Compatible with other green energy efficient heat sources e.g. heat pumps, solar, and condensing boilers.

Any type of floor finish or covering is suitable with underfloor heating, although there are few points to keep in mind. For a stone or tiled floor finish, ceramic, quarry or flagstone, such as Athena Stone Tiles, will ensure optimum heat output. With a wood finish, such as laminate, hardwood or chipboard, a maximum depth of 22mm should be used. If a carpet covering is used with underfloor heating, the total carpet thickness, which includes the underlay, must not exceed 12mm.

There are two types of underfloor heating to chose from: wet (water) or dry (electric). Wet systems circulate warm water through a series of pipe loops under the floor. They can be integrated easily into a property’s existing hot water system, and mixed and matched with radiators if underfloor heating is not required in every room. However, wet systems can be very expensive to install within an existing property, because the floors have to be taken up before the system can be put in.

Electrical underfloor heating is ideal for existing properties, due to the heating system being laid on top of the existing floor, and then covered with the floor covering of choice. Electric underfloor heating can be bought in the form of cable systems: a basic heating cable, flat cables, or woven mats. The temperature is controlled with a built in thermostat and/or timer. Automatic thermostats, rather than a manual one, have been shown to further increase energy savings because they can regulate themselves; particularly useful when the building is empty for any length of time. An electric underfloor heating system can be fitted as a DIY project, which will save money on labor costs, but a qualified electrician must connect the cables or mats to the main electrical system.

It’s hard to find good help and especially if your planning to market your home or you have just purchased one that needs some updating. Complaints about home improvement contractors rank high on consumer agency lists. Mark Nash author of 1001 Tips for Buying and Selling a Home offers do’s and don’ts for home buyers and sellers when planning to hire an outside contractor to repair or renovate their home.

Do’s

-Verify their insurance. Ask to see copies of liability insurance and amounts before signing a contract.

-Ask for references. Request a list of references from past and current clients. Call and discuss with them the pluses and minus’ of the contractor. Take the time to visit homes where work was done, check for timeliness and attention to detail on work sites.

-Request information on suppliers and subcontractors. Contractors are only as good as their support system. Vendors and subcontractors can share insight into the business practices of your potential contractor.

-Check with local Better Business Bureaus and with local building and planning officials. Most likely you’ll need building permits and certificates of occupancy from the local office that regulates renovation and building. These officials should be familiar with you contractor and their work.

-Get at least 3 estimates. You will be surprised at how different the costs can be for the same work. Have plans and specifications in writing to deliver to contractors who bid on work. A flat fee for a project is more cost effective than time and materials. Detail materials, paint colors by brand, appliance make and model and warranties.

-Draft a complete contract. Make sure it lays out who is doing what, when it should be done by and what happens if it is not done to your satisfaction. Include payment schedules and how changes to plans will affect costs and the contract. Options should be listed separate from the main contract.

-Address refusal to complete work. It’s not likely that your contractor will refuse to complete work or abandon the project, but it pays to include a course of action if these situations arise in any contract.

-On occasion provide food treats and beverages. On hot and humid summer days or below freezing winter ones, make the effort to provide chilled bottled water, steaming coffee and a quick pick-me-up to contractors.

-Be appreciative verbally. After a rough or long day at your home, I have found it always pays to let contractors know that you appreciate their extra efforts. Staying late to complete the plumbing to get a toilet running or leaving the job site broom clean without asking is worth a hearty thank-you.

Dont’s

-Ignore making scheduled payments on time. A sure bet to get slow follow-through from contractors. If the contractor is performing as stated in the contract, so should you.

-Forget patience. Delays by cabinet or door manufactures can be out of the contractors control. Don’t be afraid to double-check though if they have been ordered to meet job lead times.

-Make the contractor guess what you want. Start a clip file before you have a contractor over to review job. Pick up some home magazines and tear out colors, finishes, appliances and overall looks for a room that you like. Develop a list of dislikes, anything helps to eliminate and communicate your thoughts.

-Be cheap. Good work costs sometimes comes at a higher price. And buyers know chintzy materials and craftsmanship. Don’t nickel and dime your contractor, and pay for all change orders you request.

-Be unavailable for contractor questions. There are always a couple of items that sneak past the drawings and specifications or surprises that you run into in an older home. Make al your contact information to your contractor so if they need to reach you to make a decision that if you don’t could hold the job up.

-Forget that we don’t live in a perfect world. It’s difficult to have strangers in our homes and even more so when the inconvenience of a remodeling job interrupts our personal refuge. Contractors like to complete work in a timely manner, but they don’t control all the remodeling moons to align them perfectly on every project.

Well Pumps

Posted:30 January, 2006 by admin

A pump is a mechanical appliance utilized for moving gases, or liquids from a lower pressure to a higher pressure. They are utilized for a variety of purposes, from domestic use to commercial operations. Well pumps should generally be sized by a water-pumping expert, because pump power utilization can have a substantial effect on the overall economy of a system.

Usually, well pumps are chosen on the basis of the recommended stream rate and friction losses as well as piping, valving, heat exchange losses, and tank pressure. Well pump intake needs to be mounted sufficiently deep to remain 15 feet or more below the lowest water level. Also, there should be a filtering screen in the piping to a heat pump to limit particles and the consequent plugging or erosion of the heat exchanger. If a well pump is utilized for both domestic and heat pump requirements, then it should be customized to satisfy the main requirement and be used with a storage tank. As far as piping is concerned, it should be sized to reduce friction losses and for this, a high-density plastic polyethylene pipe is frequently used.

For optimum use and safety, it is suggested that a pressure tank should not be waterlogged. This will cause the pump to start and stop incessantly during a pumping cycle. Moreover, well pumps require a lot of energy, and, hence care should be taken to avoid any damage.

Some submersible well pumps are made of stainless steel and plastic parts, but most are constructed with brass fittings, contained in a cast brass covering. Plastic and stainless steel pumps do not cause a problem with lead leakage. However, places using submersible well pumps made with brass fittings contain brass alloys, which might contribute to some amount of lead contamination. Lead exposure has been linked with a wide range of risks, including delays in normal mental and physical growth and impaired learning abilities in young children. Extreme exposures can even cause irreversible brain damage.

Before I write much more I want to put a warning here, most artificial flowers are not made for outdoor use and no manufacturer will recommend or warranty a flower that has been used outdoors. That said, a lot of people place silk flowers outside. I personally recommend that if you are going to do this make sure they are not in the weather or sunlight as this will shorten their life outside.

Lately it has been very hot and very dry. Most outdoor flowers are looking very sad indeed. I have a friend who lives in an arid climate but always has beautiful flowers. What’s her secret? Instead of real flowers she substitutes an Artificial Flower in their place. She understands that over time they will fade and weather can destroy them but she figures that in her climate it is cheaper than the cost of annuals and water. She usually can get a few seasons out of a Silk Flower but she is ok if something happens. Because of this she has beautiful and colorful flowers all the time and she never worries about weeds, watering, pruning. In fact, if they start looking a little dusty she lightly hoses them off. In the winter, she pulls them out and puts them in storage for the year.

An artificial flower will fade over time in direct sunlight but modern materials hold up well. Bright and dark colors will fade fastest. Weather can be destructive but if you live in a climate that does not vary much, most silk flowers can withstand a small about of weather. The best option is where the flowers will be under a porch or overhang where they rarely get direct impact from sun or rain. In these cases, most artificial flowers will do well. There is a category of silk plants called near real, these are really only made for indoors and they are usually to expensive to use outdoors.

Neighbors have caught my friend a few times because her flowers “came up a little to early” or lasted a “little to long”. She laughs when she gets caught, but most her neighbors think she is a very good gardener.

Buy an amazonfoliages.com/ Artificial Flower in the place of a real one.

Why Should You Use Indoor Surveillance

Posted:30 January, 2006 by admin

You are on a trip far away from home. Suddenly it occurs to you that you forgot to hide out some precious item. That thought risks spoiling all your joy of the vacation. Your calmness is gone. What if..?

If only you had provided in time the means and the system to observe and monitor your home from anywhere… You know that indoor surveillance can inform you in real time on what is going on when you are not there. If you can convince yourself that everything is as it should be, you regain your serenity and enjoy your time.

If you monitor the images, you may get advance notice of problems you may want to know as soon as possible. Or, if the system includes a recorder, you will be able to replay the images when you want.

The capability to monitor the images from a distance, thanks to the Internet, has to be built in the surveillance camera system if deemed important. This can be done in one of a few different ways, depending on individual preferences.

We strongly advocated in a previous article that one should not, under any circumstances, set up a surveillance system just to spy on the family.
It is our firm conviction that no good can issue from such a proposition.

But there can be other legitimate motives, besides what remarked above, that suggest that indoor surveillance could be employed for information gathering.

One such purpose may be keeping an eye on helpers in charge of kids or of aged people unable to take care of themselves. Some unscrupulous people may indulge in improper conduct that there may be no other way to discover.

Another purpose may be to discover braking in of intruders. While the damage done by their presence in an apartment empty of people cannot probably be avoided at that advanced state, extensive documentation can be collected and saved for later criminal investigation.

As usual with closed circuit TV Cameras and in general with photographic instruments, one should assure sufficient light for enabling picture taking. That varies with the type of camera (color or black and white) and the light sensitivity of its sensor, and with the illumination available for the scene.

For enabling picture taking in complete darkness one can use infrared illuminators, either separate or embedded within the camera case.

To save on memory of recording media, and even more important to save on play back time, which may otherwise increase to inordinate proportions, one can establish that recording will take place only when so directed by a suitable motion detector, a device intended to trigger the recorder when needed.

In conclusion, if you agree that, when you are not there, the second best option would be to see what is happening, then you might consider exploring the installation of a simple surveillance camera system for your peace of mind. Sometimes it takes only a notice that the house is monitored to deter intruders from trying to get in.

Be honest, are you one of those people who has more time than money? Me too. When I wanted to put a new hardwood floor in my house I didn’t rush about and just start throwing tens of thousands of dollars at any contractor that offered their services to me. What I needed to do was put in the hours and find out how people go about getting good deals on their new hardwood floor installation.

1)Look for ‘contractor sales’ at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s. This is a great little tip that we’re able to come up with through a little research. The real question is whether these are really ‘contractor’ sales or whether they are closer to ‘extra inventory’ sales which are used to get people into the stores to buy other products. Guess what? Who cares? Discount sales are your friends no matter how they are labeled. The bigger discount you can get on your new hardwood floors, the better. Use these sales to your advantage and call the stores directly to find out when they are being held. In fact, if you are lucky, you might even be able to convince the store workers to tell you when the next sale is.

2)Read up on “discount hardwood floors” on the web. A couple fantastic sites to check out are Google.com and Askthebuilder.com. The first being a very powerful search engine and the second being a sort of massive data warehouse for all things related to home building. There are literally a ton of different data options available for people who are looking for discount hardwood floors. In fact, just because something is discount doesn’t necessarily mean that it is of substandard quality. It just means that you are getting a better deal than anyone else. Discount is your friend when shopping for anything including different parts of your house. Make sure you know all about the discount aspect of hardwood floors.

No Nonsense Carpet Cleaning Tips

Posted:29 January, 2006 by admin

Carpet stains are unsightly and degrade the overall quality of any carpet. This piece is about carpet cleaning and removing stains from your carpet, as well as helpful tips on how to do so properly, keeping your carpet looking as new as the day you bought it.

If you have children, running around the house it is almost guaranteed you will incur many stains throughout the childhood years. These stains seem to appear out of thin air, of course there is always the “not me” monster that loves to spill things. Different stains require different measures of removal.

The first measure to take when carpet cleaning is to be aware of the directions from the manufacturer. If you decide to use a commercial carpet cleaner, it is wise to make certain that you have taken separate measures for individual stains, carpet cleaners are typically only good for deep cleaning of an entire carpet, not for individual stains.

Here are some helpful tips that you can try without the need for a commercial carpet cleaner. If you have company over and someone accidentally spills any type of wine, soda, coffee or beer on your carpet, blot the area instantly with a paper towel to remove as much of the liquid as you can. Then use a vinegar solution that contains ¼ cup of white vinegar with ¾ cups of water mixed. Soak the spot with the solution then blot again to remove the moisture.

With juices like fruit or berries, remove what you can with a knife, a wet vacuum works typically well for this type of stain. If the juice has dried, saturate it with water and life the excess liquid. You can mix a ½ of teaspoon dish soap with 1 quart of water, apply to the stained area, and blot. Once the stain is removed rinse the area.

Every child has accidents that will involve blood or vomit on your carpet, never fear help is here. This even works well on Catsup, blot the area well and as much as you possibly can. Then you should neutralize the stain with an ammonia solution. This solution should contain 1 tablespoon of ammonia and ¾ cup of cold water. Mix this in a spray bottle and saturate the area well, but ensure that you are not wetting the carpet backing. Blot with a paper towel to remove the moisture.

For those fun crayon or paint stains, remove as much as you can by blotting with paper towels. Then apply rubbing alcohol to a white cloth or cotton ball and blot some more. You may have to apply extra if the crayon goes deep into the pile but make sure the backing does not get wet. First mix up a solution of 1-quart water and ½-teaspoon dish soap. Then apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. Blot to work the detergent into the affected area.

Remember always follow the manufacturers instructions for stain removal. This Combined with the above carpet removal tips should have you lifting the toughest stains in no time flat.
