Couch Surf America

Posted:30 April, 2006 by admin

As a professional road-tripper, I usually try to find someone willing to take me in and let me crash on their couch for a couple nights to a couple months at a time. Let me tell you, I’ve slept on plenty of couches and it’s a heck of a lot comfier than sleeping in the backseat of my car. Sure I’ve had to share some couches with pets and have even had to deal with lumpy metal springs from sofa beds, but I deal. Beggars can’t be choosers right? But the best couch I’ve ever had the privilege to sleep on was this late 1980s plump sofa with the most psychedelic upholstery. The dude told me that it was his mom’s old sofa that she donated to him when he first moved out, and that had to be like at least 15 years ago.

Granted it wasn’t the prettiest looking thing, but it was just so comfy! The crowned cushions were well padded and plushy, and from what he explained to me, included s-shaped springs that provided the tried and true long-lasting support system. The chair arms were also slightly padded, sturdy and high enough to support my head. Man, what wouldn’t have I done to buy that couch off of him!

Seeing that I had overstayed my welcome with this guy, I eventually moved on to greener pastures. While in St. Francis, Arkansas, I came across this nice lil’ old lady who offered her living room sofa bed in exchange for my dishwashing services at her roadside diner. Her sofa bed was pretty nifty; instead of taking out the seat cushions and pulling the bed frame out, all I had to do was push the back cushion support down, kind of like a futon couch except plumper. And get this, there was an extra storage compartment underneath the sofa where she kept the extra blankets and pillows.

Eventually the diner got bought out by some big-chain coffee shop and my services were no longer needed by the nice old lady. Nomadic and homeless once again, I’m hoping that the next couch I get to crash on isn’t made of leather because summer is coming up.

Trust, We Live By It

Posted:30 April, 2006 by admin

We live in a world that is full of trust. As we hear more about all things that we should do to protect our identity and checking accounts, I began to think about the many times each day that we trust someone else.

It is true that we should be careful with paper and items that relate to the security of our money. But did you realize, that every time you deal with another person you are trusting them with some part of your identity.

Whenever you make a purchase with a credit or debit card, you are trusting the person that you hand your card to that they will not steal the information. We hear reports where waiters sell the information from credit cards or swipe the encoded information into a private computer. I guess that the only way to protect against this would be to not use the cards. If a check is given, it could be even worse, the person could change the payee and amount and wipe you out. The alternative is to carry enough cash to pay for everything with cash. But then you become a target for robbery as soon as someone notices how thick your wallet is. It is hard to remove money from a wallet without someone being able to see what you have.

I guess that I, like most people, prefer not to live in fear and trust other people. When I hand my card to the waiter, I am saying that I trust them. When I write a check out to someone, I am saying that I trust them. When I fill out an application that request my social security number, I am trusting them. When I give my car keys to a parking attendant, I am trusting them with my car and all that is in it.

I heard the other day that when you stay in a motel and they give you the plastic key card that it is encoded with all of your credit card information and the information that you gave the motel. I don’t know if that is true or not. But when I return the key, I am trusting that the information will not fall into the wrong hands. When you think about it, they have all the information anyway, so we still have to trust them.

We place more trust in people that we do not know than in people we know. As a matter of fact we trust everyone who has access to the Internet with a lot of personal information. Just try a search using your name and you may be surprised. And just for a few dollars anyone can get a background check on you or run a credit check giving them all the information about whom you do business with.

When we drive the highways, we are trusting the other driver to stay on their side of the road. When we take public transportation, we are trusting the bus driver or the pilot to take good care of us. We trust the repair person not to rip us off and the retailer not to over charge us. You cannot leave your house without trusting thousands of people each day.

Doesn’t it make you feel good to know that so many people are trusting you to?

An MP3 Player Could Rock Your World!

Posted:30 April, 2006 by admin

An MP3 player is an electronic device that plays compressed audio files. That being said, it’s also the most popular way that today’s teens and adults transport their music (and talk programming) around. A fraction of the size as a typical CD player, it slides into pockets and can dangle from your neck on a chain. Don’t you miss carrying around that huge boom box? An MP3 player is extremely portable, streamlined and lightweight and is available in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. Not only that, an MP3 player is also a very affordable way to store and carry your favorite tunes around as you head for school, work or play. You can also listen to that special podcast or talk show each day that gives you information and lifts your spirits.

Most major electronic brands like Panasonic, Phillips, Sony and others carry different models and styles of MP3 players. Visiting an electronic store like Circuit City or Best Buy will offer delighted consumers a dozen or more different varieties. Different styles and models are available at your local Target and Wal-Mart as well, and in a wide variety of price ranges. When shopping for an MP3 player, try to get beyond the color you want (yes, even the hot pink one) and look at what each model and style offers and it’s compatibility with other devices.

The most important thing to consider when purchasing an MP3 player is its ease of use. It doesn’t do any good to have a cool $200 MP3 player if you have nothing but trouble downloading music onto the device. Narrow your choices down to a few and then get online to visit discussion and forum boards to find out what people are saying about the brand of MP3 player you’re considering. Advertising and glitzy commercials are intriguing, but it’s word of mouth and user experience when it comes to an MP3 player. Cheap doesn’t necessarily mean bad either, so again, look at the specs when you’re shopping around.

A Solid State MP3 player has no moving parts, making it the best thing for active people to cart their music libraries around. This type of MP3 player offers much better ‘readability’ and uninterrupted play no matter if you’re jogging, skateboarding or hitting the ski slopes. Designed with lightweight storage in mind, an MP3 player can fit into a pocket or be worn around the neck. Many electronic brand names carry combinations of traditional CD and MP3 playing capabilities. Most types of MP3 player can store hundreds or thousands of songs. Due to their durable, yet lightweight designs, the MP3 player is the most popular electronic gadget up there with the Bluetooth and the cell phone. These days, it’s common to see people of all ages hurrying to and fro with earphones connected to MP3 players as they work hard and play hard.

Remember that when shopping for an MP3 player, check the capabilities of each model and do some comparison-shopping. Price ranges of most MP3 players make them affordable to just about anyone, but the amount of storage in each different model is a deciding factor for many when it comes to the right MP3 player to suit their musical tastes.

Wholesale Appliances

Posted:30 April, 2006 by admin

Traditionally, if you wanted to have access to some of the best appliances on the market, the only way to go about it was to buy some of the more expensive brands of appliances, which are known to be good investments. However, the high price tag that some of these appliances have has made them a little too expensive for most consumers. Fortunately, there are a number of sources from which they can get high quality appliances at very affordable prices. One of these sources is a wholesaler that sells some of the best brands in appliances at below retail prices. The good news is that apart from giving you access to low priced appliances, buying from a wholesaler can also help you take advantage of business opportunities as well.

Buying wholesale

One of the biggest advantages of buying from a wholesaler is that you can have access to some of the most affordable appliances on the market. This is because as long as you buy a minimum quantity of an item, you can have access to as much as a 70 percent discount. However, the fact that you have to buy a minimum quantity of an item should not discourage you from buying wholesale because you can turn it into a business opportunity by selling them with a markup to people who need them. However, doing so would require you to get a reseller?s license. There are a number of places where you can go to get in touch with a wholesaler, including trade shows, the Internet, and wholesale stores.

On the other hand, if you do not want to have to deal with buying a minimum quantity, there are alternative options you can take. One of these options is to look for liquidators, which are companies or individuals who buy huge quantities of goods from manufacturers and retailers and sell them to consumers at very low prices. However, the main reason that liquidators can sell them at very low prices is that the items are usually older models. Another option is to search the Internet for online sellers that offer appliances at wholesale prices and do not require a minimum purchase. There are a large number of them on the Internet, which can make the search very easy.

Some of the best sources of affordable appliances are wholesalers because they offer high quality products at very affordable prices. The good news is that apart from the low prices that they offer, wholesalers can also offer you business opportunities as well, which can make buying from a wholesaler a very worthwhile investment.

Decorating on a Shoestring Budget

Posted:29 April, 2006 by admin

Right now one of the most popular shows on television is, “Trading Spaces.” If you haven’t gotten an opportunity to watch this show, the object of the game is to decorate one room in someone else’s house with a budget of a $1,000. The decorator’s truly struggle to accomplish this so you know it is hard when even they, trained professionals, are having problems creating the room of the homeowner’s dreams.

Do not despair just because your money is limited- you can still create a warm and inviting home frugally. When people come into our home and see our front room (the only room we have decorated since we are relatively new homeowners) they always comment on how beautiful our drapes, furniture, and whole look of this room is. Do you think I disclose that we put the furniture together ourselves and that the whole décor came compliments of Target? No way! Never divulge the sordid details, just simply bask in the glory and let them try to recreate your look. Here are a few tips for creating an inviting home on a budget.

· Watch television shows, read books, and look through magazines to gather inspiration for creating a stylish home. Although many of the things you look at are completely out of your budget, you can try to recreate it with lower costing materials and a little creativity. Some great looks can be found on www.potterybarn.com, www.pierone.com , www.ikea.com, and www.marthastewart.com.

· Paint is the cheapest way to really change a room. One thing I have learned is to never be afraid of color- bright colors can really liven up a room. Be wary though with small rooms because this can make the rooms look smaller and closed off. In smaller rooms use softer and lighter colors- yellows, light green, lavenders, and white/off-white.

· Getting your home organized will make your house look well-kept. To find out some great ways to get your home as well as yourself organized, go to www.organizedhome.com . This site is wonderful for learning how and what you need to do to clear out the rubbish in your home. With different styles of baskets to organize your items it not only makes the room look cleaner, but it also adds to the décor.

· Target, Kmart, and Walmart all offer great items for your home at a much lower cost. Target has fantastic drapes, tableware, towels, pillows, and furniture for your home. Kmart offers incredible linens, drapes, and sheets from the Martha Stewart line. Walmart offers great fabrics for those do-it-yourself projects in making pillows, drapes, and linens.

· To add pictures to your walls, look through old art books or photograph books. Buy a cheap frame to put it in and you will have beautiful artwork for a fraction of the cost.

· Rearrange your furniture in your home. Try to find new ways to break up a room or to make the room more open and inviting.

· Light a candle and put potpourri in a bowl. This really warms up a room, not to mention adding a beautiful smell to the air.

· Find slipcovers for your couches. Doing this is a lot cheaper then buying a new sofa and when you get tired of it you can take the covers off. These are especially nice if you have little children because it is a great way to preserve the quality of your furniture. The slipcovers are easier to clean because you can throw them in the wash, unlike your couch. A couple of great places to look for nice slipcovers are www.kohls.com and www.surefit.com.

· Want something in particular in your home, but can’t afford it? Hit www.ebay.com and bid on it. Ebay always has great things for your house not to mention beautiful antiques and collectibles which make your home more unique.

· Buy large pillows to use as extra seating. These are great for when you have a large group over and not enough seating. Don’t invest in more seating; just buy big beautiful pillows for your guests to sit on.

· Go to the garage sales, but go early. Those who wait do not get the deals that the early risers get. Don’t underestimate the Salvation Army and Goodwill either because you can find some interesting and beautiful things for your house.

· Learn one craft that will aid you in decorating your home. Several of the fabric and craft stores offer wonderful classes for learning crafts such as sewing and floral for a very low cost. By learning crafts you can make things yourself at a lower cost or you may be able to make money off of this to afford you more luxuries in your home- you just never know.

· Hit your local Dollar Tree for some great buys on things to make your home more inviting. You might laugh at this one, but you would be surprised what ends up at that store. I have bought beautiful mugs, baskets, and stationary for a buck a piece and no one knows that I spent so little money. Try to think outside the box and go to the stores that are normally not known for quality houseware. This is where you get the real deals.

· Purchase all different types of blankets and put them under your end tables or drape one on your sofa. They make your guests feel cozy and invited especially on those cold winter nights.

· Put a book or two on your coffee table that can be a conversation piece, but don’t overdo it. People tend to get carried away with this and then you lose the beauty of the furniture underneath. One or two books are nice, but four or five looks like clutter.

· If you buy the do-it-yourself furniture or have a piece that looks like it needs a face-lift try replacing the knobs on those cabinets and drawers. A beautiful brushed silver knob or ornate gold knob can make the item look entirely different.

· Replace your old plastic curtain rods with sterling silver or gold rods. Target and Kmart have some really beautiful ones with different styles of ends (leaves, fruit, glass) that really add that special touch.

· Try a theme room, but don’t get carried away. Remember that whatever theme you chose you will have to live with it for a long time. Go for classic themes that seem to withstand the ages. If you choose to pick a theme for the room do hints of it throughout rooms, but don’t make the entire room one big theme. Just give your guest’s hints of it.

I hope these tips will offer you some insight on decorating your own home. My advice to you is that you start small and with one room at a time. Do not get carried away with redoing your whole home or you will feel overwhelmed. Concentrate your efforts on one project until you are completely satisfied and then begin thinking about another project.

A Closet System Is For More Than A Bedroom

Posted:29 April, 2006 by admin

Creating a good closet system to make storage neat and organized can be a rewarding undertaking that results not only in a space looking better, but also functioning better. A good system for storage isn’t just for clothes closets, however. The truth is a good system can make almost any closet function better.

The kitchen pantry, for example, is one closet in most homes that could most certainly benefit from a system. When well designed, a closet system can make working in the kitchen an absolute delight. They can also take the guesswork out of creating a shopping day inventory. Let’s look at how.

When a good closet system is brought into play in a pantry, for example, everything within it will have a standard and organized place to go. Rather than have pots and pans stacked up in no discernable order while spices and canned goods get crammed in, a system can make it easy for anyone to find things when they need them and even enable anyone in the household to understand exactly where things should be placed when they’re put up.

A good closet system for a pantry will require a little planning to decide what types of things should be placed in this area. If it’s simply a food panty, a system might include such things as drawers for spices and sauce mixes and specialized rotating devices for canned goods and so on. The key in creating a good pantry system is making sure that everything in the pantry can be seen and inventoried quickly. This will, of course, require some careful planning, but when you avoid buying a tenth box of rice on shopping day because you thought you were out, you’ll thank yourself.

If a closet system for a combination pantry is required, the design will be a little different. The upper level, for example, can include hangers for pots and utensils while a thin, but long space might be designed for pans and cookie sheets. A spice rack, drawer or even lazy Susan might work well for keeping these items organized and at the ready. The key in this design is the same - you want to be certain you can readily spot items when you need to.

A good closet system can take a pantry that’s a real bear to deal with and turn it into a functional and attractive area of the home. By making things easy to spot, a closet system will save you time, aggravation and trouble. Plus, if you have a good closet system, you won’t go out buying foodstuffs you already have, but can’t find!

The Benefits of Juicers

Posted:29 April, 2006 by admin

Juicers are a useful tool that can help you lose weight and become healthier on a day to day basis because they allow you to make smoothies and juices at home. This allows you to make a smoothie almost as quickly as you would pour yourself a soda and it is so much healthier to have a smoothie or a glass of juice. Smoothies and juices also help you to trick your stomach into thinking it is full and killing your cravings for unhealthy foods and drinks. Juicers allow you to create a wide array of sweet things to help you feed that sweet tooth of yours without having to resort to unhealthy snacks. You can also make sweet things for children that are healthy and will satisfy their craving for sweets without ruining their health.

Juicers help you to get a sufficient intake of nutrients and vitamins from both fruits and vegetables because they are concentrated in the juice produced. Juicers also allow you to create the exact combination of fruits and/or vegetables that you feel like at that point in time. If fruits and/or vegetables can be juiced it allows people with insufficient digestive power to be able to acquire adequate nutrients and vitamins which might enable their quality of life to be maintained at a constant level or even increase, depending on their current situation.

Commercial juicers

Commercial juicers are designed to provide your establishment with the tool to provide your customers with a wonderful health experience. The motors are made for long life and with the expectation that you will be juicing more than a gallon of juice per day. The feeder is larger to accommodate larger pieces of fruit to prevent you having to slice all ingredients into small pieces. There are many well known brands that produce high quality commercial juicers. Some of them are: Champion, Juice Tree, Miracle, Nutrifaster, Omega, Ruby, Sunkist and Waring to name a few.

Wheatgrass juicers

Wheatgrass is a highly underutilized source of nutrients. The largest portion of its composition is chlorophyll. It is 70% Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, along with having many health benefits, has proven to be a natural body cleanser and neutralizer of body toxins. Wheatgrass juicers are specifically engineered to get the greatest quantity of nutrients from the wheatgrass you will be juicing. To get the greatest benefits available from one of Natures best kept secrets you will need a juicer that is made to juice wheatgrass as other juicers may not get all the nutrients available out of it. There are many well known brands that produce high quality wheatgrass juicers. Some of them are: Back to Basics, Greenstar, Life Choice, Marvel, Miracle, Samson, Tribest and Wheateena to name a few.

Citrus juicers

Citrus fruit provide us with a treasure trove of vitamins – chief of which is Vitamin C, but it also demands specialized juicers to ensure that all the nutrients that are in the fruit come through into the juice and provide us with all the goodness that is present in the fruit. Citrus juicers concentrate the nutrients since you will drink more citrus juice than you will eat citrus fruits. Many well known brands make the appropriate juicers that will get the best out of the citrus fruits you plan to juice. Some of them are: Juice Tree, L’Equip, Miracle, Moline , Omega, Orangex, Samson, Sunkist, Titan, Tribest and Waring to name a few.

Masticating juicers

Masticating juicers are juicers that masticate/ chew the fruit or vegetables fed into them. They can be used to make homogenized products such as apple sauce or baby food as well as creating juice and they can create products such as nut butters or shaved ice with the right combinations of plates. This type of juicer will allow a wide range of production types as it is versatile. It first grates produce, then masticates it and finally juices it to create the output you require. There are many well known brands which produce high quality masticating juicers. Some of them are: Champion, L’Equip, Life Choice, Samson and Tribest to name a few.

Selecting a Roofing Slate

Posted:28 April, 2006 by admin

You are planning to get your roof built or redone, and then you may have got confused regarding the selection of roofing slates. There are many types of roofing slate materials available and you my select either man made roofing slate or natural roofing slate like that of stone.

However, roofing slate made of natural stone is very heavy and very expensive too. They make a heavy material for roofing slate. The kind of roofing slate that is available for you and you may use depends to large extent on the area where you live. These materials also need high degree of skill and a lot of structural reinforcing before you can install them. This is primarily due to the fact that they are so heavy. Hence you must consider these factors before settling for them.

On the other hand, men made artificial roofing slate are much cheaper and lighter. They closely resemble the original natural stone slates and thus these entire positive characteristics make the man made roofing slate the most preferred choice for home builders for roofing slate. Roofing slates are available in a wide range of materials, colors, sizes and shapes. All these characteristics make man made roofing slates a favorite of builders and house owners alike.

Roofing Slate

If you have set your heart to install real stone roofing slate in spite of the expenses involved then you may definitely opt for it because they are after all extremely durable and elegant. In spite of being very heavy and stylish, many people have a fancy for these stones. If you want an expensive look to your house and are looking for a high end look to your house you may consider installing natural stones.

However you may have to limit your choices to the color of the roofing slate available in your locality or you may consider getting the color of your choice from the area they are found, although the shipping costs may turn out to be quite high. Do keep in mind that you should always get these natural roof slates installed by an experienced craftsman. It is not something that an inexperienced or an amateur person can do. For proper installation and prevention of any leak, and to make it strong, sturdy and durable, it is essential that you get it done by a professional who can properly install and handle the expensive stones. An amateur may ruin the stones or may not be able to install them properly, thus spoiling the look of the house.

Man made roof slates are very popular choice as roofing material. The man made roofing slate may be made of fiber, cement or may be molded from a combination of resin, glass fiber and slate dust. There are many advantages of using man made roofing slate. The most apparent advantage is the cost factor. These slates are much cheaper than the natural slates. It isn’t that man made roofing slate are the cheapest of all the varieties available, they are still costlier than other varieties available but if you want to get the look of natural slates without spending a fortune on them then these slates are the best option.. Another positive factor about these roofing slates is that they are available in a wide range of shapes colors and textures. You don’t have to limit your choice to the native colors available in your area but you may choose any style and color that you fancy.
Hence before you decide upon the roofing slate for your house, do keep these factors in mind and select accordingly.
