Roof Shingle Cleaning

Posted:30 September, 2006 by admin

The roof is the exterior part of your house and one area of the house that is exposed to continuous onslaught of nature. The environmental factors are always working against it. Some of the common factors that keep acting on your roofs are storms, plant and various other living things which may not be visible to your eyes. All these together make the roof appear very dirty and you may need to clean it. Roof shingles have to be cleaned whenever the rood appears dirty but it quite a tricky job. If you keep your roof shingles clean, then the life of your roof also increases manifold. On the other hand if you leave the dirt intact then there may be permanent damage done to the roof shingles. A severe storm may have left your roof undamaged but there may be debris strewn all over. You need to clean the debris.

It is quite simple to clean this type of debris. All that you have to do is use a washer pressure to remove it. However you must remember to start using the washer pressure from the top of the roof with the water flowing downwards. Otherwise the water may enter through the gaps in the shingles and there may be leakage. But if your roof shrinkages need more than simple cleaning then there are a host of other factors to be considered. How much you are successful in cleaning the roof shingles also depend on the type of the shingles that have been installed. The materials used in the making of the shingles influence the cleaning method. Most people use strong detergents and pressure washers for cleaning the roof shingles.

Roof Shingle Cleaning

If you see that there are black streaks on your roof then it is a sure sign of algae formation on the roof. It only means that the tar shingles have been invaded by algae and you need to treat it properly otherwise your roof will appear very dirty and stained. It will mar the entire look of your house.
The fiber glass shingles have sufficient moisture and environment which is conductive to the breeding of algae. Thus they breed really fast in the roof shingles. Washer pressure may not be sufficient to clean an algae infected roof. You need to clean the roof shingles with chemicals which are specially formulated for it. You may clean the roof shingles with sodium per carbonate and oxygen bleach. You must always keep in mind that you must use oxygen based bleach and never use chlorine based bleach. Chlorine bleach may permanently damage your roof shingles, plants and anything else that may come in contact with it. It may even harm you and any other parts of the roof like the roof gutters. Hence chlorine bleach is never recommended for cleaning the roof shingles.

Many house owners install copper shingles. They like the rich stately look of the copper shingles. The copper shingles do look great and marvelous when they are newly installed but they need maintenance. With the passage of time the natural elements play their role and the shingles appear dull and blackish or what we may also call “ugly”. It is very time consuming and tedious to clean and polish the copper shingles. You are not a professional and this job is not meant for you. You must always call a professional to clean the copper shingles. If you have spent a fortune getting copper shingles installed do spend a small amount in maintaining them too otherwise the fortune that you spent getting them installed will be a total waste!

Pillow Top Mattresses - Things to Know

Posted:30 September, 2006 by admin

When they are looking to buy Pillow-top mattresses, many people look just for the cheapest price. This leads them inevitably to purchasing plain, boring imitation Pillow-top bedding that they have to spend hours tossing and turning on at night. If you like the classical styles and comfort of Pillow-top mattresses, you do not have to settle for mass market discount stores, nor do you have to shop at a place that serves demitasses of espresso to ultra-rich, over-privileged urbanites who live in $1000 per square foot lofts. There is a compromise if you are seeking Pillow-top mattresses: just look on the Internet.

Online furniture stores are generally lower in their prices of Pillow-top mattresses than conventional brick and mortar stores because they do not have the additional costs of a showroom with commissioned salespeople. Competition is very heavy on the Internet, so there is a constant battle to gain loyal customers. You, as the buyer have only to gain from this, as it means that many online furniture stores fight to offer the lowest prices. Look to see if there is a low price guarantee that will meet or beat the lowest price – including shipping – that you can find online or in the real world.

Online stores are more likely to offer free in home delivery. For a nominal fee, these stores may also agree to set up your Pillow-top mattresses and remove the old ones. It is always best to opt for the professional movers rather than relying upon yourself to do the job. The professionals have much more experience in expeditiously and carefully moving your Pillow-top mattress, so as to get it into your home and set up in the least amount of time possible. Also, by allowing professionals to deliver your Pillow-top mattresses, any damage incurred during shipping or delivery will be covered by either the movers themselves or the retailer.

Do not forget to look at insurance policies for your new bedding. Often these are called furniture protection policies and they can differ from store to store. These polices act basically as insurance for your furniture in the event of stains, scratches, or burn marks. Should anything under the policy occur, the plan will cover the cost of repair and or replacement of the affected area. It is always a good idea to purchase one of these as it will save you in the long run the cost of finding and paying for a private mattress repair company.

Locating assistance and getting questions answered can be a difficult task on the Internet. But thanks to the power of technology, live customer service representatives are only just a phone call or a live Internet chat away. You will not even have to wait on email, as you would have in the past. Many

Planning Saves Money, When Landscaping Your Property

Posted:30 September, 2006 by admin

For the home owner, the term landscaping encompasses many different things. But there are two primary keys to successfully landscaping a property – Planning and Knowledge. In this article we will look at planning stage.

Planning: Unless you are quite wealthy, the best way to landscape a home is to break the complete project into a group of smaller sub-projects. The completion of the smaller project, when completed will provide you with the look and comfort that you truly desire, ever if it takes a number of years to complete. However, breaking the project into a number of sub or smaller projects will only have a successful outcome if you have a vision of the entire landscaping project. Many homeowners waste hundreds if not thousands of dollars, landscaping portions of their properties and not considering the entire project. As an example, if you will desire lighting throughout your landscaping it is wise to install the entire underground conduit system at the same time, as this will avoid having to dig up finished portions of the total project in order to run an additional conduit to an outlying area. This also applies to piping for underground sprinkler systems. Items such as conduit and piping are inexpensive and it is not necessary to buy the valves and wiring, as the case may be, until that portion of the project is undertaken.

If your project is installing concrete patios or driveways, paving a driveway, installing a deck, placing brick pavers or flagstone it is always a good investment to install at least one if not two 2” PVC pipes below the surface and at least a foot on either side of the installation, even if at this point in time you have no plans or concepts for how they might be used. Make a drawing or sketch of where the pipes are located. By installing the pipes you will have given yourself the ability to run pipes or wires under the project without having to dig it up and redo it.

As with any project, big or small, proper preparation is one of the biggest keys to success. Know and understand the materials that you are using. As an example, plants need a variety of soils and fertilizers in order to become hardy and survive the seasons. Materials to construct driveways, patios and walkways are laid down different depending on the foundation that the products are being installed on top off. Read and pay attention to manufacturer instructions, believe it or not they know the best way to install and maintain their products. They understand and have experimented with the best ways to create a foundation and they really want you to be happy with the end result. Use tools that are specified, especially when cutting products. Make sure that all tools, whether powered or hand, are in a safe condition.

Fire Safety Tips

Posted:30 September, 2006 by admin

Did you know that fire is the third leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States, yet most people ignore it. More than 150 workplace fires occur every day. So many of theses untimely deaths could have been prevented if they only had a plan.

The number one tip any family can have is, make sure all family members know what to do in the event of a fire. In a fire, timing is very critical. Don’t waste time getting dressed, don’t search for pets or valuables. Just get out! Set up a way for everyone to sound a family alarm. Screaming, pounding on walls, yelling “fire”!

If a fire happens in your home, you have to get out fast! Prepare for a fire emergency by sitting down with your family and agreeing on an escape plan. Be sure that everyone knows at least two escape exits, the doors and windows from every room. Decide on a meeting place outside where everyone will meet after they escape the fire. Have your entire household practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

Smoke detectors can alert you to a fire in your home in time for you to escape the blaze, it’s esp. useful when the family is asleep. Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home, including the basement. Test detectors every month, following the manufacturer’s directions, and replace batteries once a year, or whenever a detector “chirps” to signal low battery power. Make sure your alarm works at all times! A non functional smoke detector can’t save your life or your family’s. Replace detectors that are more than a years old.
Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in North America. Smoking in bed or when you are drowsy can be extremely dangerous. Provide smokers with ashtrays and soak butts with water before discarding them. Before going to bed or leaving home after a smoker has been smoking, check around and make sure there aren’t any lit buds.

Never leave cooking unattended. Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles. Turn pot handles inward on the stove where you can’t bump them and children can’t grab them and burn themselves. If grease catches fire in a pan, slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the heat. Leave the lid on until cool. For more safety tips and products visit www.safetyrus.com

Baby Room Decorating V Nurturing - Head to Head

Posted:29 September, 2006 by admin

When decorating baby rooms and children spaces there are many considerations to take into account to satisfy your need to create the “WOW” factor. There are color choices to be made,
paint techniques and finishes to be decided on, the needs of the room have to be identified, safety issues addressed, window treatments selected. Of course creating a room that your child and others love is also high on your list of priorities. All of this has to be accomplished within a set budget.

One question I hear being debated frequently is, “Should I use Primary colors or Pastel colors for my baby room/child space?”. Much information is available on the ability of Primary colors to stimulate cognitive processing and development. Babies can perceive bright, primary colors long before they can focus on pastel colors. That’s a fact. Parents want to provide a stimulating environment for their children. That’s also a fact. It’s part of the ‘morphing’ process that takes place within you when your child is born - you change from a somewhat egotistical individual to being totally self-sacrificing for the needs of your child - it goes with the territory of being a parent.

So instead of visualizing powder blue, or misty pink, you think about Magenta, or Tangy Tangerine or Aegean Blue. You tell yourself that even though the rest of your home is finished in
Barely Beige, it’s not as if it’ll be the first room you see when you enter the house, and you can always paint it over if you really don’t like it. If it’s best for your baby or child you’ll talk yourself into anything!

Then you talk to other Moms, read some parenting magazines and chat to your friend who works in Childcare. You hear about “fussy” babies, who have trouble settling to sleep, who seem to cry all the time and grow into toddlers who need to be constantly entertained. You hear the words “over-stimulated” and you gasp! Once again you’re visualizing Powder Blue and Misty Pink as your preferred color choice for your baby room or child space.

You’ve experienced your first taste of conflicting advice on parenting outcomes and providing the best environment for your child. It’s seems whichever way you choose - Primary color or Pastel color - it appears your child may be disadvantaged.

Don’t despair, there’s a simple decorating technique used by professionals that offers a solution to your dilemma. Your baby room should contain 3 distinct spaces or areas:- a sleep area; a work area; and a play area. In the initial planning stages of your decorating project for your baby/childs room, draw the room layout on some grid paper, marking in windows, doors and
closets. Next, mark in the proposed sleep area, work area and play area.

A sleep area will contain a crib or bed, a bedside table, perhaps a lamp. It is an area designed for sleep, relaxation, dreams and rejuvinating the body and mind. It should inspire a feeling of comfort and security for your child. Sleep areas are well-suited to the soothing effect of Pastel colors.

A work area will initially contain a diaper change space, diaper bucket, drawers or cupboards for clothing, storage for infant-care products, and a feeding chair which will evolve with your baby’s growth into a toddler to becoming an area where your child can develop their fine-motor skills e.g.
by drawing, painting, manipulating playdoh or construction. Your feeding chair becomes a story sharing place for you and your child, a place to build magic and imagination. Work areas need to be fully washable and easy to maintain - this is the area of the room that will suffer the most “accidents”; from baby vomit, to spilled paint, to playdoh squished into the floor. Using Neutral colors in your work area, highlighted with accessories using 2 or 3 colors from the rest of the room allows you to easily identify and attend to any “spillage” accidents that may occur here.

A play area for an infant may simply be an area where you keep cuddle toys, hang mobiles and shelve books. As your baby grows into a toddler this area of their room can become the most-
used high-traffic area in your home. Your child will be playing with blocks, a dollhouse, making “cubby” spaces, playing pirates or cowboys or schools in this area. Your toddler will use their hands on the walls to aid their physical stability as they play, and toys will be constantly bumped into walls as their gross motor skills develop fine tuning, so keep durability in mind when choosing a finish for the walls here. The best Play areas are inviting and stimulating, and provoke
excitement and imagination. Play areas are well-suited to the invigorating effects of Primary colors.

By identifying the 3 distinct needs of your child’s room - sleep, work, play - and decorating appropriately, you’ll be giving your child the “best of both worlds” without having to choose.

Decorating and best-practice parenting choices just became a whole lot easier!

One of the most important decisions for your kitchen design or re-modeling is the selection of your countertop material and style. For kitchen countertops quartz based surfaces are hard to beat. Durability, consistancy, and a selection of colors make these materials worth considering.

Using a quartz based material like Silestone countertops does provides a number of benefits. Silestone countertops are composed of a natural quartz material combined with resins and pigments. Silestone is 93% natural quartz and 7% resins. There are a number of colors to choose from so it is no problem to find one that goes well with your selected cabinets.

Stain-resistance - Since the surface is non-porous it is highly resistant to stains from your daily household products (coffee, wine, cooking oil, make-up…) and unlike granite, no sealing is necessary to preserve the shine on its surface.

Scratch-resistance - Since only three other minerals are harder than quartz (diamone, sapphire, and topaz) the surface is very scratch resistant. Excessive force or pressure could still cause a scratch but the slip of a knife is unlikely to leave a mark as it would on other surfaces.

Strength - Silestone countertops have about 4 times the flexural strength of natural granite. This added strength makes it less likely for damage to occur in transportation, installation, or in everyday use.

As an alternative to a natural granite countertop Silestone is worth considering

A storage shed plan enables you to create an attractive structure which will
compliment the landscape of your property. Today you can get simple and economical
storage plans which are available almost everywhere and they provide you with step
by step instructions for constructing a new storage shed. Each step comes with
illustrated diagrams as well as a complete list of the materials that you will need
in order to construct your storage shed. This will save you time and money as such
plans provide you with cutting schedules and complete part layout sheets.

These plans also aid the purchaser/builder as they will have an idea of how much
the new shed will cost before either purchasing it or building it. Most of the
plans that are available today are easy to follow and are very useful in
constructing storage sheds. You may also find it is a much cheaper to build your
own rather than buying a ready made one.

Also these storage shed plans provide you with information on how to build them on
different types of foundations. The easiest type to build is one that is placed
on a small gravel bed and the floor joists are nailed to a skid foundation. While
another choice is to build it on a concrete pad (much more suited for those larger
types of storage sheds). The third type are those which can be built straight on to
soil or for people who have sloping yards which are subject to movement.

Many storage shed plans use the same construction techniques and materials found in
many home construction, and a well designed storage shed will not only look
attractive but also add value to a property. But not only should it look nice but
the main factor to be considered when looking at storage shed plans is how much
storage space you will have. Your storage shed should have enough space in order
to store all your garden equipment and more.

So why not carry out a search on the internet today and see what type of storage
shed plan would suit your property. I think you will pleasantly surprised at the
choices which are available to you. As well as being a cost effective way of
getting the right of storage that you are looking for.

Vintage Chic Interior – A How To Guide

Posted:29 September, 2006 by admin

With the recent trend for all things retro, I thought I’d share my thoughts on this quick and easy guide to creating a picture-perfect vintage chic home interior:

1. Planning

Think granny’s home in the 60s and 70s with floral motifs and lace tablecloths.
There are no hard and fast rules on what makes for a vintage look. Generally, the furnishing includes antiques, second-hand furniture or new pieces deliberately ‘distressed’ to look used. This means reinventing vintage items and giving them new life.

2. Key Pieces

Whimsical designs ranging from crystal chandeliers, floral fabrics, old-fashioned lampshades, wrought-iron furniture, comfortable armchairs, candles, recycled accessories and offbeat ideas like using an old teapot to hold fresh flowers. There’s no running away from wallpaper, furs and curtains if you’re going for the European vintage look.

3. Color: Light vs Dark

Personally, I like to opt for light colors like white and cream as they evoke a more breezy and casual touch. It’s also the classic base palette of the vintage look. This color is also easy to work on since you don’t have to worry about clashing color. Alternatively, rich and darker color like burgundy, purple, black with gold accents can also character to the room.

4. Cheap & Chic

The key to a bona fide vintage look is, well, vintage pieces. As such, you’ll need to include second-hand pieces which do not break the bank.

5. Coordination Rules

There are practically no rules on putting the pieces together. However, it is important to visualize the impact of all your mismatched bits and pieces when placed together. While we are not talking Stepford Wives perfection, it helps to create a theme or motif that recurs throughout the space. For instance, pick a family of colors and vary them subtly. Using white as an example, we’d be looking at egg shell, cream, caramel etc.

6. Where to Shop

Anywhere! From ebay to antique malls and flea markets, the important rule is to know what you want but be flexible to adapt when necessary. If doubt sets in, do not commit to a purchase.

Solar Home Improvements and Tax Deductions

Posted:28 September, 2006 by admin

Going solar is all the rage these days with massive financial incentives fueling the fire. Here’s a little trick to write off an additional part of your solar system purchase.

Financing Your Solar Improvements

Improving your home with a solar panel system is financially advantageous these days. The federal government, most states and even cities throw financial breaks at you to promote going solar. With the federal government, you are going to get a $2,000 tax credit, a figure that is subtracted from the amount of tax you owe the IRS at the end of the year. States pursue a variety of plans, but most offer rebates wherein they actually pay for part of your new system. Cities also offer rebates, often by discounting your property taxes.

On top of all of this, you can take advantage of net metering laws in a majority of states. Net metering simply means you can sell your solar electricity to the local utility when you aren’t using it. Known as being on the grid, nothing is more satisfying than watching your utility meter run BACKWARDS during the day! As you might imagine, this has a nice impact on your utility bill at the end of the month.

There is one additional financial trick many people fail to take advantage of when it comes to writing off solar panels and such – financing. Even if you have the cash in your hot little hand, you should consider taking a home equity loans or refinancing your home to pull out cash to pay for the system. Why? The mortgage interest deduction! Improvements to your home are deductible if they are incorporated into your mortgage payment.

Now, you might be rolling your eyes contemplating regarding going through the refinancing process. Don’t. Many federal mortgage institutions are required to write financing for people wanting to improve their home with solar systems. Even better, most of the loans are written at interest rates well below current mortgage rates.

If you are considering doing a solar-based improvement to your home, talk to your lender about financing options. Take advantage of this strategy and you’ll be getting a mortgage tax deduction, tax credit, rebate, property tax discount and selling power to the utility company when you go solar. With so many financial incentives, you have to ask yourself whether you can afford not to go solar.

Home Audio Recording Fun

Posted:28 September, 2006 by admin

I’m not even sure how old I was when I got the gift for Christmas, but I remember thinking it was a pretty impressive piece of electronic hardware. It was really cool looking (technologically speaking), and I was awfully proud to own it. It certainly made for lots of fun times.

What was this high-tech gift, you ask? Why, it was a tape recorder! It was a monographic, reel to reel tape deck that came with it’s own plug-in microphone. I could hold that mic up to my transistor radio’s speaker and record songs onto tape. I could also play the guitar and sing and record every second of it. I could even hide and record conversations from unsuspecting family members. I was in recording heaven!

Years later I owned an 8 track stereo recording deck (ok, that was a mistake). At another point in time I had a stereo cassette recording deck that would physically flip the tape over when one side was finished recording or playing. Now I own a more conventional stereo dual cassette deck, but I no longer use it for recording or much of anything else for that matter.

All my recording is now done on my computer. The audio and midi software available today for computer recording is quite amazing. You can record multiple tracks, edit the recordings and add special effects as desired. Many of the audio recording programs come with their own native special effects such as reverb, compression, flanger, and chorus, to name a few. Some of the recording software can also accept third party effects such as vocal removers, tube amp effects and many more.

Multitrack recording software allows for recording various live instruments, vocals, etc, onto individual tracks. After recording one track, you can play it back while recording another. Once finished, you can mix all the individual tracks down into one stereo track. Some recording software will import and record both audio and MIDI, some audio only. If you have a MIDI keyboard or other MIDI instrument, be sure to pick software that handles both formats.

Creating a simple home audio recording studio is easy. In addition to software, an audio and/or midi interface will allow you to plug all kinds of audio components, microphones and instruments into your computer for live recording, recording from tape or even from your old vinyl lp’s. You can also use a home stereo system as an interface for audio components by running cables to it from your computer’s sound card. A laptop with recording software and a USB interface can serve as a totally portable recording studio. And again, if you have MIDI instruments, be sure to get an interface that will allow connecting them in additon to audio components and instruments.

The digital revolution has made music recording easily available to anyone with a computer. If you enjoy music and want to do more than just download mp3’s from the Internet, get some multitrack recording software and start your own home sound studio.
