Looking to increase the value of your home as easily as possible? Whether you’re selling your home of 20 years, or you’re trying to do a quick flip, there are a few key aspects of the home that set the mood for buyers. You need to make your home stick out as something special to the casual shopper, the something special that makes people want to live in the home.

It’s time to make your home Aesthetically pleasing!

The finishing touches that probably seem like fluff to the guys that fix everything with duct tape, are worth thousands to the buyer. Little extras often add 5-10% to the value of the home at selling time, which can be a huge amount of money in your pocket.

Asking realtors about points that sell a home, and you’ll hear about staging. Staging is the way you set the scene in your house using your furniture and artwork to show the beauty and potential of your home. Your goal is to show potential buyers how the house could be their home. The more the buyers can see the potential, the more they are willing to pay. Look for key features of your home to accentuate. If you have a great view out your

How to Be Smart About Home Security

Posted:31 October, 2008 by admin

Thinking about home security isn’t terribly exciting, but if someone breaks into your house and steals your belongings, or even hurts someone in your family, you’ll be regretting your lapse later. Why take that risk when it doesn’t require much money or effort to keep burglars away from your home? Wouldn’t you rather rest peacefully, knowing you’ve done what you can to protect those things in life that are most dear to you? I thought so. Let’s take a look at some smart and easy home security tips:

– If you have a burglar alarm or home security system, test it regularly. Also make sure all family members know how to work it.

– Keep the exterior doors (including the door to the garage) locked at all times, even if you think you live in a “safe” neighborhood (just because your neighbors won’t rob you, doesn’t mean random burglars won’t prowling through looking for victims).

– If your front door doesn’t have a “peep hole” or other door viewing device, install one so you can see who’s outside before opening the door.

– Don’t hide spare keys outside the home, such as under mats, under rocks, or in that special ultra secret place that no one will ever find (trust me: burglars know all the good spots… it’s their job). If you have problems with losing your keys, consider a thumbprint door lock.

– Install a security chain on your exterior doors. This way you can sign for packages and talk to strangers without putting yourself at risk.

– If you have a big dog, it may deter burglars, but don’t rely on your “guard dog” as your only home security defense. There are many cases where homeowners thought their dog would guard the house and instead it let burglars waltz right in and steal the proverbial china. If a burglar doesn’t show fear, chances are Fido won’t react much to him, especially once he’s in the house.

– Don’t have your name or anything beyond your house number on your mailbox. That gives anyone driving by too much information about you, information they could use against you.

– If you go on a vacation, first arrange for someone to collect your mail and pick up your newspapers. Otherwise, burglars will have no problem figuring out that nobody’s home (which is the perfect time for them to risk breaking in and stealing all your stuff).

– Get to know your neighbors, and consider starting a neighborhood watch in order to keep the block safer. At the very least, let the people across the street and next door know when you’re going to be out of town, so they can report any suspicious activity.

– Pay attention to your landscaping by keeping shrubs trimmed back from walkways, windows, and doors. Overgrown foliage can shield intruders, abductors, etc. so they can ply their vile trade in peace.

– Teach children not to give out personal information on the telephone. Also make sure they know what numbers to call, and what to do, in the event of an emergency.

As you can see, most of these security tips are just a matter of common sense. You don’t necessarily need to spend tons of money on expensive burglar alarms or high-tech video surveillance systems (half the time the family probably forgets to turn them on anyway…)

Just make a habit of applying these simple but smart home security tips, and you and your family will be much safer in the long run.

This thing is very cheaply built. Once (painfully) assembled, it works fine. I had problems with wobble until I made sure to tighten down the several screws placed in awkward locations with dubious function. The contraption is far more mechanically complicated than I was hoping, and I expect it will need frequent re-tightening and adjustment to stay stable and centered.

I recommend getting a used real drill press instead.

I am very pleased with this press.
It is not designed for ‘ultra’ precision drilling but works excellent for my needs.
I think it’s a great product for the price.

Review date : 2008-05-14
It does much of what I want it to do, problem is it is only good for very light work or as a holder for the dremel for some jobs. Many of the parts are plastic and it moves around when the product is in use, any preasure placed on the tool and it distorts from center. I have got good use out of it anyway but it wont take the place of a drill press. If it was made of all metal it would be a sweet tool with few flaws.

I purchased this drill stand to use with my Dremel MultiPro 395 to drill holes in home-brewed printed circuit boards. Rigidity is important in this application as the carbide drill bits are very brittle and any lateral movement will drilling will cause them to shatter plus hole placement is critical. I found this drill press combination to be fully up to the task.

Only have used it a few times for small projects but incredibly useful tool. Now the only question, what is the longevity.

A Guide To Ceiling Fans

Posted:31 October, 2008 by admin

Ceiling fans have been around well over a century and are becoming more popular than ever. You probably have one rotating right now; most homes these days have at least one. Part of the reason is the high cost of energy today compared with a few years ago. Not only does a ceiling fan help cut energy costs in the summer, it will help just as much in the winter if you live where the seasons change, by just turning the switch and rotating the fan blades in the opposite direction and most all fans have this feature built in. By moving the air upwards, the warm air circulates more evenly throughout the room. In the summertime, ceiling fans circulate the air in the room creating a slight wind chill effect, resulting in a temperature drop of about four degrees; it can sometimes feel cooler than that, again saving energy.

Almost all ceiling fans today come with three or more speeds and can be set to one that suits you the most at the time. While most fans will have an add-on light fixture, you will want to shop for the one that is best for your application. Although there are many good ceiling fans on the market and most will perform well, there are some cheaper ones that will not give the years of service as you might want and should be avoided if cost is not an issue. After all, installing a ceiling fan is not a job you will want to repeat in a year or two if not necessary.

Fans today come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and colors, you will be able to find a ceiling fan to fit any application or decor that you might have in mind, of course you may have to look a little longer for that special ceiling fan if you are going to install it on the patio or maybe in your gazebo, there are special fans just for that purpose.

Keep in mind the height of the room you will be installing your fan in, your installed height should never be lower than eight feet for obvious reasons. A spinning fan blade hitting you in the head is not something you want to experience. If you will be installing your own ceiling fan keep in mind the fan needs to mounted to a specially secured electrical box. Most fans will come with all the necessary hardware for installation and balancing weights that will allow you to balance the blades to eliminate any wobbling that may occur after installation. The fan light should also direct the light down from below the blades or up from above the motor to avoid any shadows on your ceiling as the fan blades spin.

There are several ceiling fan manufacturers that make great products; I will list a few for you here.

Hunter Douglas has been making ceiling fans since 1886, Hampton Bay are high quality fans that will last many years, Emerson has been making fans since 1895, Casablanca fan company makes different models and are known for there tropical ceiling fans. Harbor Breeze ceiling fans made exclusively by Lowe’s, are an excellent choice as well. These are just a few, there are many more in just about any price range you’re looking for. All ceiling fans should come with installation instruction, and most are not that difficult to install. However, if you should have any doubt as to your ability be sure to hire a certified electrician.

Decorate the Home with Stencil Decorating Ideas

Posted:30 October, 2008 by admin

With all of the conventional designs from painting and wall papering, the concept of using stencilling has become more popular over the years. More and more interior designers are using stencilling into their plans to create that great look that they require. It is always good to add a bit of creativity and flair to really bring out the personality of the room in the family home. With stencil designs, it allows a person to use their creative side and also it can be a fun way to decorate too.

Using Stencils to Brighten up the Home

The great thing about stencil designs is that a person can use them for many different purposes. You may think that they can only be used to stencil patterns onto the walls but this is simply not the case. If you want to add some flair to furniture or even glass, stencil designs can help you to achieve that. It could be that you want to add your own designs to brighten up a window. It might be worth planning exactly what you what to achieve beforehand so that you can get exactly what you are after.

Put some life into your empty backyard and start enjoying the outdoors well before you have stepped outside your own house. Manicured garden or none, it really doesn’t make a lot of difference. What does is the choice of furniture you have to make your back porch slightly more comfortable than what it used to be.

A well thought of patio furniture set will have you spend more time outside. It’s best to make the most out of a day with just the right weather. Whether it is to start on that book you’ve always planned read or to simply enjoy a glass of lemonade over a nice chat, the right patio furniture will give you just that in comfort.

When choosing patio furniture, start thinking of your backyard as part of your living room (because it is!). However, when it comes to the choices of outdoor furniture, the choices become very narrow – making you choose only between either the comfortable, but expensive to the cheap back-breaker.

Fortunately, nowadays, furniture makers have started to manufacture very affordable yet comfortable patio furniture. Your choices have expanded and here is a run through of what is available to you now.

Comfort
More outdoor furniture is now made with comfort features like cushions and soft fabric. The once hard angles that are bad for the backs have been changed and are now designed to support your back. There are even patio chairs now that come with matching footrests.

Care must be taken though with these cushions particularly those with springs so avoid getting them wet with rain and dew. It is best to put them in a sheltered area. Some maintenance might be necessary with the upholstery. But more often than not, just frequent dusting is all you need.

Movement
To enjoy the outdoors, you’d want to rock, roll and recline. And today’s patio furniture can do just that and more. Remember those bar carts, which were used to serve meals outdoors? They are back with a vengeance. New space-saving accordion tables that expand as your seating grows are available as well.

Portability is also a key feature with patio furniture design. Pieces, like portable and foldable screens, become essential to someone like you who wants privacy while at the same time the flexibility to create separate smaller areas within a large one.

Materials
You no longer have to sacrifice the beauty of expensive wood over the price of tack plastic. Nowadays, patio furniture makers have combined these materials and many more to create beautiful but inexpensive pieces that are durable and comfortable as well.

Design
If something chic and contemporary is your flavor, current patio furniture collections can deliver just that. You don’t have to settle for the bulky picnic table and can actually choose from a variety of modern and sleek designs.

Patio furniture when selected well will not only be stylish, it will also be comfortable and durable. When taking the attitude of buying outdoor furniture, it would be best to make the investment on what would feel and look good over what is cheap, but tacky and uncomfortable.

The styles available today can range from the classic to the contemporary. Just make sure that your choice of patio furniture works well with the rest of your house. It is certain that you will find just the right combination of comfort, price and style if you just take the time to find it. This, after all, is part of the investment you are making. And if you do just that, you’ll be glad you did as you sip that cold lemonade on that perfect summer day.

Five Ideas To Keep Your Basement Dry

Posted:30 October, 2008 by admin

Keeping The Water Out Of The Basement

Have you been noticing your basement looking a little damp these days? Are you thinking it might be time to build a boat for the voyage down to the murky depths of the basement? If you are, you might want to take some precautions to slow down or get rid of the wetness in the basement.

1. Find out where the water is coming from – you can not stop a leak if you cant find the hole. The water could be on the inside of the basement or coming in from outside. To find out where, get a piece of aluminum foil and attetch it to one of the walls with tape. The wall needs to be one that is usually damp. Completely cover each side of the foil with the tape so that no air can get in or out. Go back in about three days and take it off the wall. If the basement side is wet then condensation is the culprit. If the side that was against the wall is wet, it is coming from outside sources.

2. Add rain gutters to the house – with rain gutters attached to the house in the correct fashion, the excess water will not lie in puddles. These puddles can go through any crack and crevice. Make sure the gutters you already have are clean and free of clutter. Attach wire strainers over the downspout outlet. This stops anything from being stuck in the downspout. Inspect the downspout drain field. Determine if it is too close to the house. If it appears to be, add a backsplash to repel the water or send it away from the base of the house.

3. Add a slope to your lawn – the rule of thumb is about one inch forever foot of lawn. The slope should go out ten feet or more from the base of the house. Add plenty of grass seed to the lawn. The grass will stop erosion. If you are in a place that you cannot change your yard, contain and move the top drain to another part of the yard. A small drain ditch will work if it leads away from your house.

4. Reduce condensation problems – extra wetness in the surrounding air will give you problems with condensation. Give your basement the right flow of air and make sure it is vented correctly. Make sure the windows are not open in the rain or humidity. This is a result of the basementremodelinghelp.com/ drier air in the basement
. Put in an air conditioner that can be used for the basement. Use this for keeping the air colder and drier in the warmer months and the heat in the colder months. This will make things much drier.

5. Make repairs to the moisture problems – if you find pipes or anything else that has a leak, fix it right away. Clothing air-drying in the basement can be a bad thing also. Try drying the clothing outside instead. If you must dry your clothes in the basement, provide an open window.

Having a dry basement is not a hard thing to do. Learning some better habits will make sure your basement is as dry and safe as it can be all year long.

Don’t you love advances in technology? Around the holidays, this is when I typically put on my tech hat and go searching. There are so many high tech gadgets nowadays that it is tough picking through the truly useful things. When you find something really practical, that’s when it really makes sense! Well, I’ve found one such item: the digital photo frame.

The digital photo frame solves a basic problem: hundreds of digital pictures, from past vacations to birds in the backyard, locked inside multiple memory cards in a drawer in my desk. A friend of ours, who shares the same passion for shooting digital photos, gave us one of these digital picture frames for our anniversary, along with some pictures taken at our wedding!

How it works: the frame does not require a computer – you simply plug in the frame, and then your flash memory card from your camera and start watching your pictures come up on the frame! Ours has a setting to randomly display the pictures, so it’s always a surprise to see what comes up next. And what’s really neat is that I can also play music on it.

We’ve really enjoyed our frame, so we thought we would give a few out for gifts this holiday season. I saved holiday music in MP3 format, found some of our digital photos from past holidays, and put it all together for a great gift. Your gift recipients will know how much they mean to you when they receive the frame, especially with music and pictures already to go.

What to look for when shopping for a digital picture frame

Image quality and screen size. Our unit has a 7 inch frame and has a crisp picture. Pay attention to the resolution; ours is 640 x 480. We looked at others with lower resolution, but the picture quality was poor. The bigger the screen size, the more you pay. The 7 inch size is nice to display on the mantle or coffee table.
Storage is based on your memory card, not the digital photo frame itself. I recommend buying a large memory module so that you can display many pictures.
Look for picture frames that support the memory format your camera uses, and other flash formats. You may end up buying a new camera in the future, so don’t get a limited frame that only supports one or two memory types.
I suggest getting a digital picture frame that has music capability. This is a nice feature when you want particular music with a set of pictures.

How to shop: For us, we simply went online and looked at a variety of frames. Do a search for digital photo frame or digital picture frame, and you will see a variety of options from different manufacturers. The photo frame we received was from Edge Tech, and we have been very happy with our gift.

So, for this holiday season, pick up a digital picture frame for that photo enthusiast you know – they’ll be surprised and will enjoy it!
