Chainsaw Safety Equipment

Posted:30 November, 2008 by admin

I have worked in maintenance long enough to see my share of accidents and experience a few of my own, As much as most of us hate to admit it, most accidents can be avoided by simply wearing the proper personal protective equipment and maintaining a safety mindset. Chainsaws are a valuable tool when properly maintained, used within their specifications, and the indivduals using them are propely educated. Safety shaould always be your top priority when using a chainsaw. Personal protective equipment is the first step in operating a chainsaw safely. Eye protection should always be worn when operating a chainsaw. The cutting action of a chainsaw always generates wood dust as well as wood chips. A full face shield is highly recommended. This will not only protect your eyes but your face and neck as well. At a minimum, you should at least be wearing an OSHA approved pair of safety glasses. If all you have is a pair of safety glasses, I recommend wrapping a bandana around your face from the nose down. This will offer some protection but also act as a filter to keep you from breathing in wood dust.

Hearing protection is a must when operating a chainsaw. OSHA regulations state that an individual should not be exposed to 90 dB for more than an eight hour period. Chainsaw noise averages from 90-100 dB depending on make and model. There are many good ear muff-type protectors available today. If you use earplugs, make sure they are rated to the decibel level of noise that your chainsaw produces.

Longsleeves and leather gloves are essential when using a chainsaw. Woodchips and debri can go anywhere once a chainsaw starts cutting. Don’t take anything for granted. One of the tricks that I use in the summer time is to use welding sleeves. Welding sleeves are used by welders when they have a short-sleeve shirt on. They are sleeves that fit over you arms and have an elastic on each end that holds them in place on your wrist and bicep. They can easily be removed when he job is done. No one wants to where a longsleeve shirt in the summer time. Welding sleeves offer you another alternative to keep safe.

Blue jeans and a pair of leather chaps are the preferred equipment to keep your legs and feet safe. Safety shoes are now equipped with composite as well as steel toes and come in a variety of styles. Safety is ultimately in the hands of the individual. If you do not wear the proper personal protective equipment, you ultimately open yourself up for injury. Don’t be the person who gets injured and wonders for the rest of your life: “If I only….” Chainsaw safety should be your top priority whenever a job comes up where a chainsaw is needed.

Wallpaper Tips for Your Home Remodeling Jobs

Posted:30 November, 2008 by admin

Putting wallpaper on your walls is one of the easiest and quickest ways to completely change the mood and appearance of a room. Wallpaper comes in a wide variety of styles, textures, colors, and designs. Here is some things you need to know to select and buy the right wallpaper for the job.

First of all, you need to estimate how much wallpaper is going to be needed for the project at hand. So here is a general formula to help you find out. First measure the height and width that needs to be covered. Then be sure to add an extra 10 — 15% to cover for waste. Once you have this number you can divide it by the square footage rating of whatever paper that you choose. That should give you the figure of how many rolls of wallpaper you are going to need.

Actually it’s not a bad idea to add on a few that extra rolls too, especially if you have a complex pattern that requires it. And besides, you may need to make repairs in the future anyway, so having an extra roll or two available can come in very handy later on.

One warning to be aware of regarding wallpaper is that due to the production process, rolls that may appear to be similar in the store will not always look that way when you actually get them on the wall. That’s why wallpaper rolls come in what is called dye lots that identify the rolls that actually match. So be sure as you go through and select your wallpaper, that you look for the rolls that all come from the same dye lot.

Most modern vinyl wallpapers already have paste on the back, so it’s just a matter of soaking them in water and hanging them on the wall. However there are different kinds of papers that are available. Solid vinyl papers are the most common of all these days, as they are very durable, washable, and easy to hang. There are also other papers that are simply vinyl coated and so therefore are somewhat less durable but still fine for most uses.

More expensive papers include embossed paper that has a raised pattern on it, and it is also easy to hang. Some papers are made of grasscloth, and are especially useful for covering walls that have imperfections or are damaged.

Foil wallpaper is very expensive, although it can quickly brighten up and change a small room if used correctly. Some also like to use fabric wallpaper, but just keep in mind that it does not clean very well or easily, and it can be extremely difficult to hang.

Generally speaking, most wallpaper hangers find that working in a clockwise direction around the room is best for right handed people, and going counterclockwise works best for left-handed people. Wherever you start in the room is largely up to you, but try to select a major focal point to begin with.

Selecting and hanging wallpaper is well within the reach of most homeowners. So it is one of those home improvement projects that almost anyone can do with a little determination and practice. So why not give it a try in your home?

This is a must-have product if you purchase one of the Cricut cutters. The mats ARE sticky and if you try to pull the remaining paper up with your hands it will curl up. I’m not sure how you would get your shapes/letters up without it (dental floss, maybe?).

Well worth the cost!

Review date : 2008-10-12
I have a Wishblade and I bought this hoping it would help me get the smaller cut pieces off the sticky mat. Did it ever! It is the best thing that has worked for me. Love it, love it, love it!

I kind of want to give this item a low review simply because I do not believe it should be extra. It should be something that comes with the machine.. But that has nothing to do with its purpose or function. I use mine all of the time. If I am cutting I am using the spatula to remove my cuts. It always works great and when I use it I rarely tear anything.
For thin papers or extra sticky mats this is a must!

Cricut 29-0099 Spatula Tool

I am an avid scrapbooker and was thrilled when I finally got my cricut machine..I was so disappointed because I had so much trouble getting the cutouts off the pad..well, dissappointed no more! Once I got my indispensible spatula it was a breeze, so go for it, you won’t be sorry!!

Review date : 2008-07-22
if you have a cricut, you need this tool. perfect for scooping up paper off the cutting mat without ruining the paper or the mat. spatula is sharp enough to scoop up paper but not to sharp to harm you or the mat. easily cuts down the time it takes and well work the cost.

Building a Room Addition can be one of the best investments you can make in your home. Building a room addition, such as a family room addition, or bonus room can add wonderful new living space to your home. However, prior to starting a room addition, a homeowner should first formulate a room addition plan. There are several key factors that should be considered prior to breaking ground.

Developing a room addition plan should include both interior and exterior considerations. With many room addition projects a homeowner can draw up the basic room addition plans, including the floor layout and the physical exterior shape and size of the addition. However, if the roof lines and/or foundation footprints on the existing home or the new room addition are complex, an architect may be required. An architect may also be required to ensure that the finished room addition aesthetically melds well into the existing home. This is a key factor for resale value. If a room addition appears as an afterthought to the home it will be aesthetically unappealing to the neighborhood and to someday prospective home buyers.

When planning a room addition, the permit / inspection process will typically include an overall building permit, as well as electric, plumbing, and insulation permits. In order to complete the building permit process you will need drawings or sketches of the room addition. Besides overall sketches of the room addition with overall dimensions, the drawings will also need to include cross-sectional views showing the framing type and physical sizes of floor joists, roof rafters, and wall framing construction. You will also need a bill of materials and a cost estimate for the construction. The building inspector will use this information to determine if the construction will meet all construction and safety codes. The building inspector also uses the Bill of Material and cost information to assess the amount of the permit cost.

During the building of the room addition, inspections should be completed after the:

? Foundation is poured

? Rough framing completed

? Rough Electric completed

? Rough Plumbing completed

? Insulation completed

? Final Inspection / Occupancy Permit (Electric/Plumbing are complete)

Whether hiring a general contractor or planning to be a do it yourself carpenter and general contractor a budget and time table should be developed prior to starting the room. Not only is it necessary in the permitting process, it will help in identifying long lead items and provide the information necessary for financing the project if required. In addition, if acting as your own general contractor creating the time table will help assist you in determining need dates for sub contractors.

With room addition building plans and permits secured, as well as a solid Bill of materials and a timetable completed, a homeowner can begin the room addition project with a high likelihood of a smooth and successful home building project.

Fireplace Screens

Posted:30 November, 2008 by admin

Fireplace screens are one of the important products of the hearth industry. These are accessories of fireplaces that add charm to hearths and homes, and provide comfort and warmth to rooms.

As a practical application, the screens safeguard the rooms from sparks that escape from the fireplaces. Beautiful carpets and attractive floors are protected; they are effective safety features for kids and pets in the home. If the fireplace is kept open, there is the possibility of wind entering the room through the chimney. Fireplace screens can reduce wind interference.

Fireplace screens are commonly used as decorative accessories. They are usually made of material that can resist heat from fireplaces. Fireplace screens are decorated with artistry work that improves their appearance. Moreover, if the screen size is larger, the fireplace looks larger and more attractive.

The screens are available in a variety of styles ranging from antique, traditional, to contemporary styles. The screens are available in a wide variety of colors and polished finishes of antique brass, copper, natural iron, bronze iron, pewter, and satin black.

Mostly, functional screens are brass frames with black mesh. Decorative screens are designed as single to multiple paneled, bowed, glass, fan, and summer screens. Summer screens add beauty to fireplaces and find usage in summer months. One of the finest varieties of summer fireplace screens is the fan-shaped peacock screen in polished brass or silver pewter. Five-paneled screens are well suited for fireplaces that have large openings.

The distinctive categories of fireplace screens include traditional spark and flat guards, folding screens, and screens that are attached to fireplaces as curtains or cabinet mesh. Sometimes, the screens are obtained with opening doors that are convenient to add wood or stroke the fire. In some cases, firewood holders and other matching utensils are obtained along with the screens as a complete set.

Common Decorating Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes

Posted:29 November, 2008 by admin

Avoid a Decorating Disaster with these simple tips!

Having a master plan is essential to success. Often times a person will purchase an entire furniture grouping because it is what they see in the furniture showroom. If you think about it, that’s how most high ticket furnishings are marketed. Furniture retailers want to sell you a sofa, love-seat, chair, accent tables and all the lamps in a grouping. The reason for this? They make MORE MONEY and the salespeople get to THINK LESS! This is an example of one size fits all decorating. In some situations this is fine, but It usually lacks character and personality. If you want to create a room that is unique and special…
Here is a list of mistakes you can avoid.

Furnishings that do not fit the room.

This is the most important design element and should be addressed first. Many rooms contain too much “stuff” and make the space appear smaller than it actually is. Measure your room and bring the tape measure with you when shopping for large pieces. (Everything looks smaller in the store!)

Poor furniture placement.

Often large pieces are placed too far apart. This does not create a comfortable, cozy conversation area. Consider creating two intimate seating arrangements in a larger room

The room does not function.

Besides looking good you will want to create a space you can live in. You will need to determine how the room is used and if there are any specific needs of family members or pets. Proper traffic flow is essential. You do not want to create a pattern that constantly walks in front of the television!

Artwork hung too high.

This is quite common. The rule of thumb is to position the center of the piece 5 to 5 1/2 feet from the floor. (This applies even if you have cathedral ceilings.) Mirrors should never be in a dark corner. Instead place them adjacent a window. Remember what will be reflected and position items appropriately. Too many pictures on the wall. In this case, less is more. Think about what your favorite pieces are and showcase them! Remember it is a good idea to leave one wall void of accessories to create a resting place for the eye.

Improper lighting.

Often not enough light sources. This is common as many people will purchase two matching lamps and think they have decorated! (remember the furniture showroom?) Essential to a properly lit room are General Lighting, Task Lighting and Accent Lighting.

Stuck in a the past.

Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of this. We may have items that were purchased twenty years ago. This is great if your theme is retro but if not, consider a few inexpensive purchases to update the decor.

Accessories out of balance or no theme.

Try to create a balance of high to low. Just as with floral arrangements, keep the items to groups of 3,5 and 7. Most importantly you should keep similar items together. Glass with glass, metals with metals etc. You will be amazed how this will work every time!

White walls.

Many people have a fear of color. They think that white goes with everything or have the mistaken idea that white walls will make the room appear larger. Don’t be afraid to try a bold paint color. It will dramatically change the feel of the room and enhance the decor.(see selecting the right paint color)

Dining Room Furniture

Posted:29 November, 2008 by admin

The bare necessity of eating has transformed into an art, an experience, a style and a certain way of living. Family rooms with the family eating in the kitchen have long become passé, and the eating space is redefined as the dining room. A dining room is not just a place for the family to congregate to eat, but also to entertain, and throw formal dinner parties. Dining room furniture has thus acquired a multifunctional character, and come in numerous styles, ranges and quality levels to accommodate and reflect an individual’s taste, needs, and style.

Dining room furniture generally comprises a table, chairs, china cabinet/hutch, buffet and sideboard. A table is usually rectangular, to complement the room’s shape, but also comes in square, oval or round shapes. A four-legged table is a sturdy option. Sometimes there can be one or two center legs with side supports. With children or elderly around, a round or oval table is a wiser option. The rounded edges ensure that additional chairs can be placed flexibly, and is best suited for houses where space is a constraint. Tables can be four, six or eight seaters.

To accommodate more people, tables can be pulled apart at the center, and a leaf is inserted in between when required. Tables come in different styles, from Victorian to Italian, rustic to modern, and chic to contemporary. Tabletops can be marble, glass, wood or other materials. Chairs, too, can be bought as a set, or mixed, matched and coordinated Dining chairs can come with rattan seats, upholstered in leather, fabric or rich tapestries. The range of styles, designs and materials is unlimited.

China cabinets can be aesthetic, with built-in lights to display attractive cutlery and dishware, or purely functional and used for storage. Sideboards can provide additional serving and storage space.

Without compromising on quality and durability, there are a few other considerations that have to be evaluated while looking for dining room furniture, including the kind of style, look, and material desired, dining room space and budget constraints. Both up-market as well as affordable options are available. One can also try many online options as well An individual can choose the desired styles and types without leaving home. Most sites provide free shipping and online room planner store locators where one can see and get a feel of the furniture.

Normalize Indoor Humidity With Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Posted:29 November, 2008 by admin

Hot, humid days are the worst days during summer. The conventional saying, “It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity” rings true in our ears whenever we feel fatigued, uncomfortable, sweaty, and sticky. The discomfort that heat brings us is far worse with humidity.

All office building have in built refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifiers to stabalise the humidity at levels humans feel comfortable with. This level is usually around 45% to 50%. This technology is now widely available for homes and offices, but obviously on a smaller scale. These devices come as portable so they can be used anywhere around the home and are very reasonable in price.

This type of humidifier works well when the humidity is high or low. It has the ability to add or retract humidity from the air as too little moisture in the air can be uncomfortable and too much can also be uncomfortable. The device can detect when to do either by measuring the humidity, all one needs to do is plug in the device and away it goes.

You can also purchase a gas fired desiccant dehumidifier which will save you a fair amount on electricity. These come especially useful when you need to go off on camping or hiking trips and can help to reduce the humidity of the inside of your tent for a much more enjoyable sleep. These types of device will probably operate of the same gas cylinder you use to cook your food.

These types of dehumidifier will cool the air as well as control the humidity, which makes them particularly useful for fluctuating climates. So for the colder winter months when humidity is low the device will put more moisture into the air and undertake no cooling and when it is hot remove moisture and cool simultaneously.

If you are a dremel user this is a handy addition to your armoury - works well

Review date : 2007-03-09
works well, I used not even a full disk to cut out all the excess metal in my keys(to reduce pocket weight), which are stainless steel mostly. Also use the fine grit purple attachment for polishing rust off some of the parts under the hood of my car.

Review date : 2007-03-08
nice product, much better system than the black wheels you screw on, they would always break and be a pain to change. I havent broken one of these yet.

Review date : 2007-01-03
The new EZ Lock mandrel is a good addition to your Dremel accesories, particularly if you use cut-off wheels regularly. It make it somewhat easier to change cut-off wheels, but since the EZ Lock mandrel works with only a few other Dremel accesories, you still have to change mandrels to use your other accessories. The cut-off wheels supplied are heavier duty and seem to last longer than Dremel’s previous heavy duty wheels.
