Finding the Right Home Furnishing Store

Posted:31 December, 2008 by admin

How do you find the right home furnishings for your budget and your tastes? Most of us only buy furniture once every ten years or so depending on which consumer study you check out. That means that when we do make those furniture purchases, we are usually a little uneasy about the process. After all, most of us buy a car more frequently than we do home furnishings.

When it comes to home furnishing shopping, there is actually some really good news. Whereas the furniture retain industry used to have a reputation similar to that of used car lots, the industry has made a push to change that perception. Most home furnishing stores now use a no hassle, low-pressure sales technique. In addition, many of them have eliminating haggling from their pricing. Most of the stores are even now offering things like lounges and concessions to make your shopping experience easier. In addition, prices are dropping and customer service is rising.

So what should you be looking for, specifically, in a home furnishing store? That is a tough question to answer, because a lot of it is going to depend on your budget and your taste. Like with anything else, home furnishings range in price a great deal. However, for the price conscious shopper, there are a number of budget priced furniture stores. Don’t let the prices fool you, though. Many of the lower priced stores offer great warranties on their furniture. The truth is that many times the cheaper furniture is made in the exact same warehouses as the more expensive furniture. The only difference is who is ordering the frames and what brand is burned into it. Therefore, it may be worth your time, no matter what your budget is, to check out your local home furnishing warehouse store.

The second thing you should check into is the customer service offered by the home furnishing store you are thinking of working with. Find out what kind of warranties the store itself offers on the furniture. Most will use the manufacturer, but if you can find one that services at least part of the furniture themselves you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle down the road. The other consideration to make is how easily you are able to get in touch with someone if you have a problem with your furniture once it is delivered or picked up. Do they have a central customer service staff? Or will you be dealing with your sales person who has already made their money on the deal? These are things to ask about and then weigh against what you are looking for in terms of the furniture before choosing the store.

It is a big deal to buy home furnishings. It changes the look of your home, is a large purchase, and is something you don’t do often. Because of those factors, it can also be very stressful. The best way to make the experience a good one is to make sure you work with a good home furnishings store that fits your needs. Check out their quality, selection, and customer service, but remember one other thing. The most important factor you should consider when buying fairviewjournal.com/category/home-tips/ home furnishings is how much you are going to like the furniture. Get what you like, stay in your budget, and odds are that you will enjoy your new home look.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green

Posted:31 December, 2008 by admin

Never before has the environment been on the minds of consumers, like it is now. Color trends reports continue show the consumer’s desire to bring the outdoors in. Never before have the color trends, fashion houses, and retail showrooms together shown America’s growth in their concern for the environment, yet designers seem resistant to feel they have any culpability to the source of their inspirations.

Interior designers and redesigners have always used the elements found in nature to inspire their room design, yet a stunning disconnectedness is shown to that which inspires designers the most…the great outdoors.

“It’s not easy.” says Jean S. Green, writer and environmentalist. “As a matter of fact,” she continues, “I don’t think it was meant to be. We are a consumer society. What that ultimately means is the ‘educated consumer’ become so picky that nothing is good enough. Things are ‘outdated’ and ‘need to be replaced.’ Out with the old and in with the new…throw it away and get a new one is the ‘entitlement of the consumer.’ This is why the remodelers and interior designers must educate the public. We best serve a public that can make intelligent decisions about the choices they make. By educating the consumer about earth friendly choices, we can help them achieve to get what they want, while bridging a balance toward our concern for nature.”

Green is right! Educating the public about environmentally friendly choices that are available, shows your customers that you truly care and that you’re aware! They will see how you are aware of issues affecting our Mother Earth. They will see how you value the earth (their mother too) and will feel that you will treat them with the same noble compassion. Actions always speak louder than words, but the pride of your commitment to the earth, will go far to teach others to do the same. The first of those to embrace the environmental changes of attitudes that will ultimately affect everyone positively, will be seen as positive leaders in their industry.
There is an emerging presence of David versus Galioth. A voice of hope in the middle of widestread despair. A voice of generosity in the midst of greed. A voice of simplicity in the face of so much of everything. A flower amid BIG OIL. Hopeless…yet ripples can live to grow big waves. Ideas are always mightier than swords.

Ghandi once said, “Our earth has enough for our need, but not for our greed.”

The inspirational elements found in nature should be known with more intimacy than the actual pieces of furniture, fabric, and floor coverings that mimic them. If our interiors are increasingly trying to mimic the outside, we should look upon and understand the work of the Master before we go and try to interpret and recreate it!

Redesigners have the opportunity to show they value the room’s owners and resources in balance with the needs of the environment. Redesigners who show respect for the resources the room contains and makes the most of them will serve their clients well. When we automatically throw out most of the objects in the room, it demonstrates an utter disregard for the value of the original object of inspiration…nature…and the people who live there.

Value should be given by customers in your efforts to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Value is assigned to those things when designers appreciate the original elements and are able to communicate those values to their client. Respect will be given to you for demonstrating compassion for all those things great and small. Our earth, resources, and each other.

Reducing and reusing are not only friendly to the environment, but on your customer’s checkbook as well. Designers who quickly determine to “strip it to the studs” and start over, do a great disservice to their customer and to the environment. It is very cost effective to the consumer for us to take more conservative approaches, so a eco-responsible redesigning service is actually worth more. Imagine, actually earning more for buying less! If you can dream it you can create it!

Some designers ague that it is impossible to “compromise their designs” in the face of keeping some of the room’s “challenges.” It is difficult to change, and it’s not going to happen overnight, but then again, it could and that would be good! The Ecologically-friendly mindset is a new concept for many mid-western people (I am from Ohio, considered the cross-section of the populace) We are creatures of habit, but I encourage you to think of how you can operate your design firm in a friendlier shade of green. Make conservation an ongoing issue of discussion when you are with your client and in your own mind. Learn about all the ecologically friendly products out there and support them!

May God bless you abundantly as you learn to go green!

Modern Bedding Styles Made Easy

Posted:31 December, 2008 by admin

These days bedding not only serves an aesthetic purpose but a practical one as well. For many of us with children, pets and busy households, the idea of immaculate untouchable bedding is not a reality. Bedding must fit into our lifestyles as well as our budgets. That means accessibility, easy maintenance and affordable prices. With today’s bedding it has become unnecessary to spend countless hours caring for and maintaining bedding just to achieve that modern look that we all desire. For many of us we also do not have the time or patience to spend focusing that much energy on one room.

Modern bedding is all about colors, shades, shapes and lines that not only reflect you and your personal space but also the mood that you want to convey in the room. All together your design choices should create a story that you are trying to tell. Bedding is no longer only intended to cover a mattress. It has now become the focal point of the room. This is your sanctuary and it deserves some deep consideration and thought in its design. Since you spend a third of your life in your bedroom you can see the importance of making it suit your personality.

When decorating your bedroom in a modern style it is important to keep a clean, uncluttered look in the bedroom. This not only applies to bedding but the furniture and accessories that you choose as well. Avoid mixing antiques with this modern look as the effect will look confusing and unattractive. It is also important to keep personal items and knick knacks as organized or out of site as possible. If you enjoy these guilty little pleasures be sure to carefully select modern accessories that accent the chosen colors for the room. Contrasting with the odd bold, bright color piece is another trick to making an impact. Coordinate your entire bed from the sheets hidden beneath to the decorative cushions that adorn the top. This will keep the theme of your room strong and keep the focus on simplicity and design.

Also remember that bedding can be achieved on a budget. With so many online bedding stores targeting the modern bedding market prices have become much more affordable. Shop around and find what suits your lifestyle and budget. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for-it’s a fact that well made bedding, when taken care of can last years. Be sure your choices are not solely made on price but quality as well.

If you have trouble getting started pick up a design magazine. There are many great ideas out there waiting for the designer in all of us to run with. You will be surprised how quickly you can pick this up. Remember nobody knows your style better than you.

This is hard to use and prone to breaking. The foil cutter breaks after 2 times.

I was given the "MIU Connoisseur Corkscrew" as a Christmas gift two years ago. Since then, we have used it several times a month (I drink a glass of red wine every day, medicinally of course :-) with the same great results every time.

The device is well made and easy to use, if/when it happens to break I will replace it with another.

Highly recommended!

Awesome. Removes corks with very little effort. Best part is that you can also use the lever to remove the cork from the corkscrew itself, so you no longer have to fear cutting your hand when removing a cork from a corkscrew. Get it.

This was a wonderful tool for about a year, and I was thrilled that it was so much cheaper than the name brands, but then some part of the internal mechanism broke so now I’ve just got a neat foil cutter.

these openers are no good, they break after only using them about a dozen times or so
buy the better one because these are a waste of time and money

Moroccan Themed Furniture

Posted:31 December, 2008 by admin

The distinction between many types of furniture can often be a subtle one. With Moroccan furniture, you need not worry about detecting the subtleties.

Often used as a theme for writers, painters, and hippies, Moroccan home décor and furniture is becoming a very inviting new trend among homes. It is a captivating oasis that adds so much color and beauty to your home.

Colors are very important in Moroccan furniture. There is rarely a plain piece of furniture when it comes to Moroccan design. Everything is vibrant and stunning, with plenty of fabrics and mosaic added to even the tiniest piece of furniture. Colors that are indicative of the Moroccan furniture are red, green, and blues that are found in the seas off the coast of Morocco. Gold, yellow, and silver colors are taken from the desert to add a bit of history and nature to the furniture. All the colors used are bold, and are often put together to add a statement to the furniture.

Moroccan furniture design is based loosely on a tropical feeling. Essentially they wanted to bring the outdoors in when making the furniture. The furniture tends to be very heavy and bulky so that it is sturdy like the trees and adobe homes. Benches are made with exotic plant designs, beautiful mosaic patterns, as well as gilded designs. Leather couches, chairs, and benches are a staple in any Moroccan style home. They are made from the finest material and often come in different colors and textures.

Patterns are extremely important in Moroccan furniture. Almost all furniture made has squares, rectangles, and diamonds that add to the interest of the piece. Usually done as a mix match of patterns, it always flows naturally and makes it look like a piece of art. Most patterns are designed not to match even in the same set of furniture, but all have the same basic essentials in it to keep it looking great together.

With Moroccan furniture, fabrics are beautiful and adorn many of the sitting areas. The material most commonly used is a silk material to offset the heaviness of the furniture. You will find silk on lamps, tapestries, and just about every piece of furniture. Tapestries are made from silk, leather, wool, and an assortment of other materials. The lamps that are made in the Moroccan style are some of the most intricate and beautiful lamps you have ever seen. They can be made of wood, iron, or even slate and the carvings are opulent but simple at the same time.

Moroccan furniture leaves you with a feeling of utter bliss, as you surround yourself with quality and vibrant colors. At least it does this for me. For others, the taste is too eclectic. The only way you will know is to give it a try.

Preventing Burglaries With Home Security Cameras

Posted:30 December, 2008 by admin

Most crime experts agree that the best crime tool is one that prevents the crime in the first place rather than just trying to foil it as it is taking place. There are plenty of ways to send a clear signal to would-be intruders that the security of your home and family is a high priority to you, and that they would do well to try to choose a less challenging target elsewhere.

Of course, some security measures, especially those inside your home may be best kept discreet or even virtually undetectable. But before a burlar can break into your home they have to size it up from the outside. They will be looking for clues about how prepared you are as a homeowner and how difficult you have made things for them to be able to get in and out as quickly and stealthily as possible.

So the outside of the house is where you can make a clear statement to potential burglars that your home is not a good choice for intrusion. One way you can do this is by using home security video cameras in prominent and also strategic areas of the outside of your home. You can bet that burglars will be looking for these cameras when they go through a neighborhood as the last thing that they want is to have their image captured on video where it can be used to help identify and prosecute them.

So if you choose to use a camera system outside, it’s actually a good idea to make them large enough that they can easily be seen from the street. Put them in a prominent location that can’t be missed by an outside observer. Make sure that they cover any vulnerable areas of the home and major entry and exit points too. That makes the planned break-in so much harder to accomplish.

You can even consider using fake security cameras for this job if money if a major consideration in your home security budget, and you just afford the real thing yet. Many fake cameras look identical to real ones and can’t be distinguished as not being the real thing unless you actually take them apart. Remember, the strategy in this case is to try to prevent the crime more than actually catch the criminal in the commission of the crime.

Many criminals will not want to take the chance of breaking into your home if they get the impression that you are well prepared and that you have a good security plan in place. So plan ahead to try to prevent the crime before it can even begin.

Why It’s OK to Break The Rules

Posted:30 December, 2008 by admin

I hate rules.
We’ve all heard it before. “Rules are made to be broken”. This is definitely true when it comes to the ‘rules’ of décor. Who comes up with these ‘rules’ anyway? And what do they mean to us?

Not that long ago we were all being told to never put pink with red or green with blue. The fact is that combinations such as these are the basis of some of the most beautiful color palettes being used by very talented designers around the world. These silly ‘rules’ are applied to all sorts of things in our lives by ‘experts’ in fashion and interior design and they’re taken as gospel by many people. Though, these days it does seem that we follow these ‘rules’ less rigidly than in previous generations.

I would personally like to applaud the woman who first braved the scrutiny of her mother and her friends and yanked on a pair of bright white pants the day after Labour Day. Of course, we also can’t forget about those that ignored the gasps of their peers and dared to mix gingham with toile. What about the forward thinking trendsetters that renounced traditional color schemes and touted the virtues of a ‘monochromatic’ design. To these rule breaking warriors I say BRAVO!

Now, I’m not going to suggest here that ALL ‘rules’ of this type are pointless and should be disregarded. Some ‘rules’ exist for good reason and should be adhered to strictly. For example, there is reason to avoid the use of very dark paint colors in a really small room. I firmly believe that stripes and plaids should not be mixed. I also think that the ‘rule’ of threes and fives is definitely a keeper. Let me also say this; there are some people out there that should follow the ‘rules’ at all times. These are the people lacking confidence of style and color. If you have a friend with bad taste, please do not let them loose in a paint store and tell them there are no rules. This could lead to disaster. But, if you have a good track record with your decorating and feel confident in your ability to pick out colors, themes and accents for your home, then by all means omit all the ‘rules’.

Here’s what I suggest you do instead of following rigid ‘rules’. Go with your gut. If you like a color combination, there’s most likely a reason. If you feel good walking into a room then chances are you have a successful design. If you feel nausea or have to squint when entering the space or are just downright uncomfortable, then something is wrong and rules or no rules, you’re going to have to fix it.

Several weeks ago I felt my kitchen needed a facelift. So, I began pulling a variety of things out of the drawers and storage bins to see what I had to work with. I found a ton of plaid and checked dishcloths in a variety of colors that had never been used. I discovered a stash of purple and red accessories that I had forgotten about. And, in the bottom of a large bin of ‘extras’ I spotted four framed prints with just the right combination of colors. A new kitchen scheme was born. I hung the prints, ironed four plaid dishtowels to use as place mats and arranged the accessories about the room. I had mixed shades of red, green, purple, orange and yellow in splashes all over my previously ‘neutral’ kitchen. But, I wasn’t done yet. It needed something. I grabbed my favorite pink frosted glass star-shaped candleholder and added it to the center of the table. I stood back. Much to my surprise, I felt almost giddy. The room had taken on new life. The kaleidoscope of colors that swirled around me in checks, plaids and solids of all kinds was not overwhelming or clashing. It was a feast for the eyes and a very appetizing color celebration. I had broken ALL the rules successfully. So, there you have it. Proof that ‘rules’ ARE sometimes made to be broken and that the most important ‘rule’ of all, is that you trust your instincts. Besides, breaking the ‘rules’ has always been fun. So get to it!

Web Detective Services

Posted:30 December, 2008 by admin

I hate to say this but there are a lot of nasty people out there. And the reason I hate to say this is because I am generally an optimist. But the more I watch the evening news or read the morning newspaper the more skeptical I become. That is why more and more people are using web detective services.

If you are unaware of what web detective services are they are basically databases filled with information on people such as criminal records - convictions, court records, and court cases and they allow you to run a background check on almost anyone.

In this day and age it could be a very wise decision to run a background check on people just so you can feel a certain amount of safeness. I’ll give you an example - my sister Samantha and her husband Larry were looking for a new house to purchase. Their family had grown and they had out grown their present home with the birth of their fourth child.

Samantha and Larry had found a perfect house in what seemed an ideal neighborhood. It was a five minute walk to the local school and their was a big shopping mart within a 10 minute drive. They were about to purchase this home when they decided to do a background check on people that lived in this beautiful neighborhood.

To their surprise they found that a convicted sex offender resided on the same block that they were going to purchase a house on. You can never be too safe especially with four young children so they nixed the deal on the house and purchased one in a different neighborhood. Their philosophy is - it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Another example of using a web detective service concerns a childhood friend of mine named Shirley. Shirley met a man at work and they began dating. Things were going very good between the two and about 4 months into their relationship he proposed marriage.

Shirley knew very little about the history of this man as he never really talked about his past. Before Shirley decided to give this man an answer she ran a background check on him and found out that not only had he been married twice before he had never divorced. And he had three children from these marriages.

So you can see some of the advantages of using a web detective service. And there are not just negative reasons but there can also be positive reasons for using web detective services such as finding birth records of your family tree and searching for lost loves, family, friends and relatives.

I’m not sure how important these web detective services are to you but to some people it gives them a peace of mind. And like my sister and her husband said - it’s better to be safe than sorry.

I wanted to get a chain saw and spoke to a friend who reccommended buying an electric one. It was the best advice I have gotten in a long time. Gas powered string trimmers and lawnmowers are great until they stop running - then they are a hassle to have to fix. I went on Consumer Reports and this model was one of the highest rated models listed. This thing is great. I used it all day cutting back some unruly trees in my front yard. Some of the branches I cut of where pretty thick. It did everything I needed it to do.

Review date : 2008-12-06
This has been the best money I’ve spent on Amazon!! This saw is durable, and a quality alternative to a gas saw. I have used it to cut multiple trees up to 1 foot thick and it never blinked. I’ve also used it to cut 17 oak/creosote railroad ties (the real ones around 8×10 inch or so)during one yard project. It NEVER struggled due to power. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a quality saw for less than $100. You MUST MAINTAIN THIS LIKE A REGULAR SAW! This means clean it, check the bar oil, and adjust the chain before you use it every time. I think I will have this saw for a long, long time.

Review date : 2008-12-02
This is a great chainsaw. I spent some time researching the right one to get and Consumer reports was right on with this one. It works great, very powerful. I have used it to chop through 10" branches and nothing has even given it a hiccup yet. Cuts through trees like butter! It’s great if you don’t need a highly portable saw. You are limited only by your extension cord.

Review date : 2008-11-30
Had the saw for about a month now, cut about 3 cords of oak, so far so good. Realy like the light weight & cutting ability with logs in excess of 18". No gas & engine oil & not breathing the fumes is also a big . Works great with my Honda generator when I’m over 100′ from the house. I went through 3 sears 18" gas saws in the past 12 years if it lasts as long
I’ll be quite happy.

Excellent product, exceptional value.
Good power and supplied with adequate chain.
Have used it so far 5 times and it has exceeded my expectations.
