Roman Shades are a Versatile Accessory

Posted:28 February, 2009 by admin

Roman shades are oblong shaped pieces of material that are designed to be lowered and raised in folds of equal size. The construction is a combination of rings, drawstrings and poles that span the width of the blind. When totally extended, the blind is usually flat, although some designs have small folds around the area of the poles. The blind is suspended from a panel which is fixed to the top of the window frame, or the wall above the window.

It is possible to add a lining to roman blinds, both for increased insulation in cold weather, and to add privacy. Being a single piece of fabric these style blinds can be quite transparent when the interior lights are on, unless they are well lined. The lining also makes them heavier and can therefore make them hang better.

These are a particularly versatile type of window covering and can be used in virtually any room of the house to add a stylish touch. When decorating you should consider roman blinds as a simple but very effective form of window covering. They can be made from a range of materials to suit your particular tastes, or existing décor. They can give a homely touch to bedrooms or kitchens, and can be used as sheers together with drapes to really enhance that formal dining area.

Making your own roman blinds is a very simple task for anyone with a sewing machine and a little patience. You can pick up a variety of patterns and designs from interior design magazines, sewing stores or the internet. If you do not feel up to the job, however, there are a fantastic range of reasonably priced roman blinds available in home stores nationwide. You should have no trouble finding something to complement whichever room you are redecorating.

Roman shades are an eye-catching and very fashionable alternative to curtains and they can really add to the feel of whichever room you are decorating, whether that is rich, soft and old fashioned, or cutting edge minimalist. Whatever you choose, your visitors will always stop for a second look at your stylish new blinds.

Kids Beds - Finding the Perfect Bed for Your Child

Posted:28 February, 2009 by admin

Your child’s room should be a haven of imagination. If should be bright, beautiful, and comfortable so that all of the castles, cars, fairies, and farm friends that are featured in books and captured in your child’s heart can come to life with ease. Parents, help your child’s dream come true by purchasing the ideal bed.

There are many choices to consider when choosing the right bed for a child: children’s metal bunk beds, kid’s solid wood bunk beds, kids’ bunk beds that fuse a twin bed with a futon, and many, many more. Nightstands and toy chests are offered to match many of these kid’s beds. Most styles are offered in twin size and full size. Many of the bunk beds actually separate, creating two distinct pieces of furniture.

Today children’s beds come in a variety of styles that include bunk, loft, canopy, sleigh, captains and daybeds. Besides the “cool factor” of kid’s bunk beds, there are several practical benefits to choosing one for your child’s bedroom. Whether it’s one kid or two, bunk beds are a great space saver in any kid’s room. They generally have storage (making them an economically wise choice), work well for sleepovers, and can stimulate the imagination as your child’s bed becomes a pirate ship or dollhouse. Loft bunk beds are perfect for students. They feature a comfy bed up above and a desk, shelves and bookcase down below. They are great space savers too and work best for sleepovers and families with two or more children sharing a room.

Futon bunk beds feature a twin size bed on top and a full size futon on the bottom. The futon on the bottom can be converted from a full size bed to a couch, giving you great flexibility while maintaining ease of use. They also come in different styles and finishes (just change their covers to get new looks for your room). A daybed with an optional trundle drawer makes a handy extra sleeping space. Just pull the drawer out and put a mattress inside whenever you need an additional bed for sleepovers or overnight guests. Captain’s kid’s beds offer additional storage for clothes, toys and extra bedding with several spacious drawers. Your child’s room will have a rich, elegant feel with a sleigh bed. A canopy bed, on the other hand, will lead your child into a world of fantasy to live his/her dreams. Expand these with a decorating theme - a race car, golden coach, sailor’s private boat - and you have a winner on your hands.

When decorating a child’s room, it can be difficult to make everything come together. Children’s bedding sets can really help to set the tone for your child’s bedroom. They are great for infants and for teenagers alike. They make it convenient to choose the style that you and your child like best. Children’s bedding sets are versatile. With reversible comforters, neutral sheet sets and a couple different accessories, a room can easily be changed as the interests of the child changes. A bedding set for your child will also be easy to clean and offers the child a chance to express his/her individuality with ease. Additionally, shopping for bedding is significantly easier, as the sets contain everything one needs and eliminates the need to match colors or styles. Today there are choices galore: character beddings, bed linen, accessories, quilt covers, curtains, wallpapers, borders, blankets, beach towels, rugs, wall clocks, alarm clocks, mirrors (Disney, Postman Pat, Cinderella, Winnie the Pooh, Bratz, Walt Disney, etc.) and more, depending on your budget and imagination.

Whatever you decide on, make sure you put time and effort into choosing the perfect beds for your children, so that your whole family can sleep tight.

Embrace Color and Bring Your Room to Life

Posted:28 February, 2009 by admin

You wouldn’t believe what color can do for a room. It can transform a room that is boring into an amazingly lovely space. Don’t be scared off by color. This is your chance to explore different colors and see which you believe will give your room that desired effect.

A helpful way to figure out which colors will best coordinate is to familiarizing yourself with the Color Wheel, which consists of primary and secondary colors. It is simple and works like this: the primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. By mixing two primary colors, you create a secondary color.

Secondary colors include orange, violet, and green. By mixing two primary colors in equal amounts, such as red and yellow, you get orange; yellow and blue to get green; red and blue to get violet. Secondary colors are also known as complementary colors because they sit opposite the primary colors on the Color Wheel.

The three complementary colors are red and green, yellow and violet, blue and orange. These colors always go well with one another, hence the word, “complementary.”

Complementary colors are important because when placed next to each other, they make each other appear brighter and add intensity. These color schemes are used in every area of our lives. During the holidays, red and green are in unison. The use of a red ribbon on a wreath makes for a beautiful combination. Renaissance painters utilized gold on a blue background, making the two very compatible.

Moreover, if you mix one primary and one secondary color or two secondary colors, the result is a tertiary color. However, tertiary used to refer to neutral colors, such as browns and grays. The tertiary colors are: yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue violet, blue-green, and yellow-green.

Lastly, warm colors are red, yellow, and orange. These colors are warm because they remind us of the sun, fire, stimulate appetite, and conversation. Cool colors are blue, green, and violet. They bring to mind water, grass, and plants. Blue is sometimes used in bedrooms because it has a calming effect and aids in sleeping. The neutral colors are the grays and browns. These are considered neutral since they don’t contrast with much of anything and are a bit dull.

In 1994 I purchased a Dremel kit and a version of this chuck was included. I was quite excited as those who have worked with the fixed-size collets know how pesky they are, especially for small drill bits.

ohmi Vibration. I contacted Dremel Manufacturing and they, in 1995, had withdrawn this chuck as it was "too heavy" and "did not run true." They were glad to send me a package of fixed collets (but, having about fifteen different Dremels — AC and battery), I have enough collets, thank you.

Several years passed and then I saw that the adjustable chuck was again provided. I have one and will get more … Dremel has solved the ‘balance’ issues which, are mighty, given the mass of this steel and speeds of 30K RPM.

Also, I am a fan of the 50-bit box sets of carbide drills. When Harbor Freight sold these at half price, $4, I bought eight boxes. However, if you’ve tried these, you know that using such bits on metals, even ’soft’ metals, they break easily.

Using the variable chuck I devised a solution. If you have ever tried to deal with a carbide drill, broken off in a drill hole that is critical, you will mightily appreciate this … so … for $9.95, check or Paypal, I’ll provide instructions and 2 additional components that virtually eliminate breakage.

And, if you haven’t tried such a drill, for $12.95 I will send the instructions, kit, and 3 carbide drills for you to try. Quite honestly, if you have not had the delight of using a carbide to drill, say, medium-hard steel, or even a printed circuit board, you will be very pleased.

it may vary, but mine is nicely centered, no wobble. doesn’t hold quite as snug as a collet.

Review date : 2007-08-23
This item works great. My only question is why doesn’t the manufacturer provide it as a stock item with all its tools?

Review date : 2007-08-21
I began using the Multipro Chuck as soon as I got it! No need to switch collets and it will hold the tiniest bit. It is just what I needed to interchange brand accessories.
Love it, love it!

Review date : 2007-07-16
This is a really nice idea from Dremel that is supposed to make changing bits a lot faster. And that it does. Plus it is very well made. However, I stopped using it as no matter how hard you tighten it, it loosens up and the bit begins to wobble (not a good thing at 5000 rpm). Then you have to stop and retighten. So it’s too much of a bother. I do not recommend this item.

When Your Carpet Gets Flooded

Posted:28 February, 2009 by admin

It happens all of the time. You come home from work to find water running out of your garage or front door. You rush inside to find that your water heater tank has sprung a leak and your entire house is now flooded. As your couch floats by you begin to wonder what to do. This article will give you some information that you need to know if the unthinkable happens to you.

Water heaters are just one source of flooded home. Other sources include broken pipes, broken ice maker lines, and clogged air conditioner drains to name a few. No matter what the source of the leak, there are steps that you need to take immediately to rectify the situation.

The longer your belongings stay wet, the worse the damage will be so the first thing you should do is call a flood specialist. A water damage restoration company will have the equipment necessary to extract the water from your home and dry it quickly. Do not even think of tackling this problem yourself. A shop vac and some floor fans will just not get the job done. Professional flood restoration services will bring thousands of dollars worth of specialty equipment into your home to take care of the damage.

Now that you have a water restoration company on the way, contact your insurance company. The quicker you let them know about the problem, the quicker you will get your claim settled and your life back in order. Many companies will immediately send an adjuster to the scene and others may choose to just contact you the next day. Once you get an adjuster, they may tell you that you need to use their restoration company but remember that they can not insist on it. They can only recommend a company. You have the right to use any company that you choose.

After your restoration company has extracted the water from your carpets and floors, they will set up powerful fans and dehumidification equipment. This equipment will completely dry your home over the next few days. After your carpet is dry, your adjuster will decide what is salvageable and what needs to be replaced.

This is of course an over simplification of the process involved but it gives you an idea of what you need to do. Contact a restoration service, contact your insurance and then hope for the best. Flood damage is never easy to clean up but remember that you will eventually get through it.

Faucet Maintenance Will Prevent Headaches

Posted:28 February, 2009 by admin

Faucets in your house will not cease to function properly at a very frequent pace, but when a faucet packs it in it can cause quite a mess in your home. The most important part of preventing a really bad faucet accident that can cause considerable damage to a house is proper faucet maintenance. In other words, make sure that you take care of the problem as soon as you see kitchen faucets start to drip, instead of waiting to see how much water damage your kitchen cabinet can take! Most indoor plumbing problems are easy to remedy, even for the novice handyperson. There are some common leak problems within homes, and this article will help you decide how to deal with them.

The first common problem is leaky pipe joints within the kitchen. In the average house, the kitchen sees as much water flowing through it in a given day than any of the bathrooms. It is not surprising, then, that joints will spring leaks as time passes. In order to repair leaks, first locate the valve that controls the water output in the sink. Once you have located it, shut the water off. Next, remove the joint that is leaking and hold it up to the light. You should see light filtering through any holes or cracks in the line, and these need to be replaced. This can be done with plumber’s tape, but make sure to wrap it tightly around the damaged portions. Once this is done, replace the joints and turn the water back on. If there is still a leak, you might have to repeat the process and check other areas, such as the fittings.

Another common problem area, especially in colder climates, is that pipes may freeze. This problem can be pretty annoying, as home owners will not always know which pipe it is that is frozen and is causing the problem. First, turn on all the faucets in your house. The ones that are not putting out water are the ones where the frozen pipe is attached. Shut off the faucets that are producing water and leave the other valves open. Now you will have to turn off the valve that brings water into the house.

There are several ways to thaw a pipe once you have located the frozen one. Determine the material the pipes are made of; a blow dryer or a heat gun can be used to thaw them out, but too much heat on a plastic line might melt it. If the ice plug formed due to a hole or crack in the pipe, you will want to repair it before your job is complete. In order to prevent more frozen pipes in the future you should consider wrapping them with insulation or heat tape, or building a heated space for the pipes to run through.

Have You Thought About A Futon For Your Space?

Posted:27 February, 2009 by admin

When I first got into the Futon business about six years ago, I was under the impression, as a lot of folks are, that futons weren’t nice enough for anywhere other than college dorms and first apartments. Well, things have certainly changed. This is not to say that those unfinished tri-fold frames with thin all cotton futon mattresses don’t exist anymore, they do, but there are also some very nice frames, mattresses, and futon covers in today’s market.

I believe that futons are some of the most versatile pieces of furniture on the market today. Are you looking for something for your guest bedroom? A sofa that can convert into a bed when company’s over? Would you like a beautiful piece of furniture for your small space? Maybe your door way is not wide enough to get that expensive sofa through? If you’ve asked yourself any of those questions, a futon is for you.

Futon frames and mattresses can go just about anywhere, I haven’t seen a space that they don’t accommodate. I’ve seen the frames I sell go into third story rooms in those gorgeous 1800’s New England Colonials. While they are beautiful homes, they are quite a chore to move anything into or out of. I have sold many Futon Frames and Mattresses to customers in New York City, where space is at such a premium, that I’ve lost count. Don’t forget those rural areas, where going to the furniture store is sometimes a day’s drive.

So, you like what you’ve heard so far? Well, it gets even better. The majority of frames, mattresses and covers that I sell are made in the USA. A claim that those mega marts won’t even try to make. I strive to sell as much product that’s made in the USA as possible. I live here, and want to promote American made products.

There are a few things that you need to consider if you are looking for a futon. What is my frame made of? How long will my frame last? Always look for a futon frame that is made from solid hardwoods, avoid any frames that are made from particle board or MDF. Measure width and the distance between the slats on the back and seat decks. Slats should be at least two and a half inches wide and if the spacing is more than three inches, forget it. Even with the best mattress on the market you’ll feel slats that are too thin, or to far apart. If you use a futon frame with substandard, unsupported slats you run the risk of ruining your mattress. Try to look for frames that feature mortise and tennon joinery and metal on metal connections, they’ll only add to the life of your frame.

Futon mattresses are a whole other ball game. Do you want something soft, firm, or in between? What are the pro’s and con’s to natural fibers vs. foams? How long should my futon mattress last? Feel is a rather subjective term; someone’s firm could be too soft for another. As a general rule of thumb, my customers like a firm futon for sleeping, a soft futon for sitting, and in between mattress for a sofa that converts into a guest bed. Foam futons usually retain the firmness they have when purchased, but only if the foam is of an acceptable quality. Look for foam that has a density no less than 1.2 pound per cubic foot. With foam, higher density usually equals a long lasting mattress that retains it feel. Natural fibers, mostly cotton, are good for futons that need more flexibility. For those of us that are traditionalist’s a natural fiber and foam blend is a good choice when looking at a futon mattress.

The futon cover is the piece that buttons up the look of the futon. It is the one part that is not 100% essential, but at the same time can improve your frame by 200%. Today you can find futon covers in a wide variety of colors, patterns, prints, and materials. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when looking for a futon cover. Do I need a cover that is washable? What is the difference between a natural and a synthetic fibers? I always recommend a washable cover to anyone that has pets or young children. I know my washable cover has save my family ton’s of money with my Great Dane, Jay, bless his slobbering heart. Dry cleaning can be expensive, and if you fit into the same category that I do, you’ll want to sacrifice those beautiful patterns for a cover that you can clean yourself. With the money you’ll save on dry cleaning you’ll be able to purchase a new cover when the time is right, because futon covers are replaceable! Cover materials do make a difference in how your cover feels and wears over time.

Natural fibers, cotton and linen are nice and soft to begin with, but can wear faster than synthetics. Synthetic fibers; polyester, nylon, rayon and such; might not be quite as soft but they last longer than natural fibers. Synthetic fibers have come a long way, they are constantly being improved and they hold vivid dyes that cotton and linen can’t. A good compromise between Natural and Synthetic fibers is blends of the two, which are in abundance in the futon cover market.

To make a long story short, I’ve sold futons across the country, to a wide variety of people and homes. I’ve seen futons go to college kids in their dorm rooms, and to families in their living rooms. I am proud to provide a service that is appreciated by so many. So take a look at the futon frames, mattresses, and accessories on the market today and find the futon that is just right for you and your needs.

Living Room Lighting

Posted:27 February, 2009 by admin

Lighting is an important feature in home décor. It highlights our surroundings and enables us to perceive colour and texture. Valuable time is spent selecting colour, furniture and accessories for the living area. Choosing the right lighting is essential to maximise their impact.

Lighting plans for a living area or family room must always take in to account what activities will occur there. Most people will want to include general lighting for watching television and entertaining, accent lighting for artwork, plants and interesting architectural aspects and task lighting for reading or sewing.

For ambience in the living room, use a combination of overhead light fittings, table lamps, floor standing lamps and wall mounted fittings. For an increased level of ambient light, use translucent shades on table lamps instead of opaque.

Small living rooms can be made to feel bigger by lighting an entire wall. This can be done by using recessed light fittings that are mounted on the ceiling. They will need to be and equal distance from the wall and each other to get the best effect. This idea can also be used to highlight walls with interesting textures or features.

Brick or stone fireplaces can be emphasised by installing recessed downlights in the ceiling above the mantle creating a charming grazing effect across the surface. The use of wall sconces on either side of the fireplace will draw attention to the area as well as providing general lighting for the living room.

Task lighting can be accomplished by placing a floor standing lamp either side of the reading chair. The light should come from behind the reader’s shoulder and the bottom of the shade should be located at eye level to avoid glare.

Paintings can be highlighted with low voltage halogen picture lights. They are usually frame mounted and provide bright, white light across the painting.

Large houseplants can be accented by using up-lighting floor lights behind the plant, creating a silhouetted feature which will brighten up any dull corner.

Glass cabinets with collectables make a sparkly feature to any living room when the right type of lighting is used. For the best effect try using recessed adjustable light fittings with low voltage halogen light bulbs.

To make your living room seem larger, carry the atmosphere outdoors by lighting gardens, shrubbery and water features that are visible from the windows in the room.

Don’t Make These Mistakes When You Buy Furniture

Posted:27 February, 2009 by admin

Everyday people make decisions on a wide variety of things, and at times there is some important aspect that before you purchase it, careful consideration and an informed idea has to be the key. Furniture shopping should not be the exception! Outside of knowing the price, many people walk into a store essentially blind to what is waiting for them. They just go in thinking “I need a new recliner”. To assist you in the preparation for furniture shopping I have briefly described what I have found to be important concepts to think about before even entering the store.

Many people shop for a preconceived idea or look instead of what they actually need and want. With furniture changing everyday life as we know it, it is very important to not only think of the functions you wish your furniture to have but also, comfort (when sofa or chair purchasing), design and color scheme and type of material desired. A poorly designed piece of furniture can leave your back messed up.

I find that knowing these few things are the major part of furniture or sofa shopping. With all of these ideas floating around out there, how do you know what type to buy? Well, the first thing is how big is the space you are putting it in? That information might help you to decide if you only want a loveseat (2-seater) or a full couch.

The next idea - especially when buying a sofa is doing you needs to have it turn into a bed for guests who may visit, or do you just want to be able to lounge on it. Once you have selected the style of the sofa or couch, you should sit on it to see how comfortable it is. I prefer microfiber furniture for comfort. This is important, because if you don’t want to sit on it chances are that your guests wouldn’t want to either!

And finally, if you are like me and have children, the need to stain resistant material IS A MUST! Microfiber furniture is also excellent in this regard. At this stage, find out how the material wares, if it fades with use, you might want to either pick a lighter color or stay away from that material. The color scheme of the room can help you to decide on the fabric print or color of the sofa.

Knowing these few ideas will greatly assist you on the way to purchasing the ideal sofa for your needs and space and budget. But above all, have fun!

I bought these for my wife awhile back with some paints to hopefully get her back into her love for painting and she has had no complaints at all. For the price, you are a getting a good selection of brushes and a little holder for them all. They are not of the greatest quality, but they are not of the worst either.
If you are a beginner wanting to get into painting, I suggest this as a decent started set of brushes, or if you just need some extra brushes but do not want to spend a lot of money on nice onces that you are just going to trash or anything, this is a good set.

for the price, these brushes are perfect! they are a lot better than my old ones that had fallen apart. really helped my painting skills out.

Though you may get what you pay for, these brushes are a steal for the price. They’re cheap, and the quality shows the price…yet insofar, none have broken, and now that they’re broken-in, they aren’t terrible.

Bottom line: certainly not professional quality, but unmissable for the price.

Exceptionally good quality. I recommend this product for beginning to intermediate painters. The carrier is a nice bonus for transporting to the field.

I’m renewing my artistic bent. These brushes were a good start. They are a symbol of my long lost youth. Thanks!
