The Right Cleaning Tools Make Your Job Easier

Posted:27 February, 2009 by admin

There?s nothing like walking into a house that?s just been cleaned. Ahhhh?.that clean, bright smell. That clear, fresh feeling. It?s something everyone enjoys, but what it takes to get there isn?t always the most fun. However, when it comes to a sense of accomplishment, there?s nothing like a good scrub to make you feel that you got the most out of the day.

In that regard, cleaning is therapeutic. It?s one of the few things that allows you to have closure. However, when it comes to real cleaning, the job demands the right tools. That musty sponge in the corner of the cabinet under the sink isn?t going to cut it if you want your home to really sparkle.

Various cleaning tools offer different advantages ? from sheer cleaning and scrubbing power, to sanitary qualities, to their ability to do specific jobs, such as picking up hair and lint. Some of the tools bring you new ways to clean that you might not have thought of before. Some may provide you with new incentives to clean just because you will have a better way of getting the job done.

What do I mean exactly? Well, when it comes to surfaces such as ceramic topped stoves, cleaning may be overlooked because they are such a pain to clean. However, there are now new types of cleaning cloths that make polishing stoves tops easy and, well, rewarding because you can do it well and easily.

So, if you are dismayed by cleaning and not getting the results you?d like, consider the tools you are working with. Maybe it?s time to get serious about investing in the right tools to get the job done.

Tools That Make Cleaning Easier

1.Microfiber cleaning cloths.
These cloths are miracle workers. They make cleaning a snap and shine like nothing else. Tired of spraying gallons of window cleaner on your granite surfaces and using two rolls of paper towels to make them shine? Well, here?s your answer. Microfiber cleaning cloths shine and brighten granite, glass, chrome or metal, and work WONDERS on ceramic stovetops. READ MORE ABOUT THE MIRACLE OF MICROFIBER.

2.Cleaning cloths.
When it comes to dusting or overall cleaning, nothing can compare to a good quality cleaning cloth. No, your husband?s old undershirt is not the tool of choice for dusting. Besides that, who WANTS to clean with an old t-shirt? Old clothes are for the trash, not for cleaning.

Purchase a set of 10 white dish or cleaning cloths to be used only for cleaning. These should be used for three different distinct purposes:
1.General cleaning, such as windows, mirrors, and polishing metal
2.Furniture dusting and polishing
3.Scrubbing, such as counters, walls, floors, etc.
Now, to keep your interest in cleaning, make sure to keep your cloths clean by washing them regularly in HOT water. Throw in some bleach to the wash to keep them white and pretty. Having a clean cloth to begin with will keep you interested in cleaning and WON?T spread more dirt and grime around.

4.Electrostatic mopping/dusting cloths.
Marketed under the names of Swiffer and Grab-It, these cloths work miracles in getting up dust bunnies, hair, and anything small and difficult-to-grab. Do yourself a favor and follow vacuuming with an electrostatic mop! You?ll be amazed at everything your vacuum leaves behind and that these little gems pick up. Too cheap to buy one? Then put an old pair of stockings or pantyhose over a mop and use this after vacuuming. It does an amazing job.

5.Baby wipes.
These aren?t for bottoms anymore. No, these versatile cleaning cloths are great from removing everything from eye make-up to messy faces. In the home, they are the perfect spot remover. Baby wipes quickly pick up stains on carpets and upholstery don?t leave behind soapy residue that actually ATTRACTS MORE dirt, like many specialized carpet and upholstery cleaners do. Wipes are also great for walls and woodwork.

6.Paper towels.
Cleaning toilets is a nasty job, but one of the most important when it comes to having a clean house. Keep a spray cleaner such as 409 or Pine Sol in a cabinet close to the toilet with a roll of paper towels to clean when needed. Use the paper towels to clean the seat and outside of the bowl. Then, throw these away. Really, now, who would want to REUSE a cleaning rag or sponge that?s been used on a toilet? Ick. Paper towels are the way to go here.

7.Toothbrush.
Sometimes you just need to get in there and clean and the Army was right, it often takes a toothbrush to do it. Keep a toothbrush around to clean corners of grout, stained tops of woodwork, or any nook and cranny that needs a scrubbing.

8.Wastebasket liners.
Keep these on hand to line trashcans. Then, when it?s time to empty the trash, you don?t have to go searching for a bag to empty it into. Put two or three in the bottom of the can so that when the trash goes out, you?ve got a new liner there ready to go. Keeping trash cans lined is another ?clean? idea that keeps can nice and clean.

9.Telescoping duster.
Everyone needs to get into those hard to reach places. Get a telescoping duster to help you reach into high corners, dust chandeliers, or tops of bookcases.

10. The Right Paint.
Strange as it seems, paint can be your best friend when it comes to cleaning. If you have flat paint on your walls, you will have a very difficult time cleaning your walls of fingerprints and other stains. Your painter may kick and scream, but the next time it comes to paint a room, choose egg shel or other paint finish that can be cleaned.

11.Brush for scrubbing.
Sometimes, you just need to get down on the floor and scrub. When those times come up, make sure you have a good quality stiff-bristled brush to do the job. Nothing can compare to a shower that has had its tile brushed.

12.Squeegees.
These are essential for cleaning windows. Yes, windows. You?ve got to clean them, too. A squeegee will help you clean windows without having to wipe everything completely dry or use up fifty rolls of paper towels. Use a cleaning cloth to wipe any excess liquid.

13.Tall broom & mop.
Mops and brooms are often too short for you to really apply adequate pressure for cleaning. Select brooms and mops from janitorial supply stores or home improvement centers, like Lowe?s, to find brooms that are heavy-duty and industrial-sized. Taller brooms and mops also won?t leave you with a backache that will stop you from the rest of your cleaning, too!

Time to Build that Deck You’ve Always Wanted?

Posted:27 February, 2009 by admin

Outdoor patios and decks are great summer projects. Imagine being able to come home from work, get a nice tall glass of something cold, and sit out on your deck or patio and enjoy the view. It isn’t as difficult as you might think, and probably less expensive than you anticipated.

With all of the things that cloud our life these days, computers, electronic gadgets, television, and cellphones, to name a few, it’s nice to create a place where quiet and beauty are the focus. It adds an escape that adds tranquility to an otherwise hectic lifestyle. You won’t know how you ever did without one once yours’ is built.

In this article, I will help you explore a few different options for this type of home improvement. Decks and patios add value to your home, so besides the enjoyment you will get from this add-on, you will also reap the benefits of adding monetary value to your property.

Before you tackle this project, you need to plan it well. Don’t take the simple square deck approach. When most people think of a deck, they think of a flat, square platform on stilts. Today’s decks are much more than that. There are so many options, the planning stage will not only be the most important part of the project, but it will also be the most enjoyable.

Think of all of the activities your deck can be used for first. Sunbathing, cookouts and barbecues, entertaining guests, parties, and just relaxing and enjoying the view are some things that immediately come to mind. How much space will be required for you to get the full enjoyment out of your deck?

Are you going to place a hot tub out there? A barbecue grill? Patio furniture? Tables? An area for your favorite games and activities? An area closed off for your children? You will save a lot of money in the long run if you plan your deck for all the things you might use it for before you begin building it.

You can always add on to your deck later if your budget won’t allow you to build your dream deck all at one time. But if you have the option, do it right the first time. So make a list of what activities you want to have on your new deck. Draw out a rough sketch on paper that outlines the different areas you will be considering.

Consider the different possible shapes that would accommodate your different areas and that would enhance the beauty of both your deck and your home. Keep in mind, special shapes do require more work and possibly more expense. However, it might just be worth it so you have exactly the deck you want.

Once you have decided all of that, you will now need to attend to some details. First, of course is, will you be building it or will you be hiring a contractor? Next, what permits do you need from your city or county to build a deck attached to your home? What requirements come with those permits. Termite protection is one of the requirements in most places, for example.

If you are going to hire a contractor, they can most likely help you obtain all the necessary permits and they should already know what requirements will come into the process. If your contractor advises you not to go to the expense of obtaining a permit, tell them you won’t be needing their services. The headaches you will have down the road due to not having obtained the proper permits for building your deck are not worth the money you might save now.

Now you, or you and your contractor are going to have to decide on the materials your deck will be made of. Some are made of just treated lumber, others are made of redwood, still others are made of cedar or a variety of other woods.

The region you live in and your climate will probably have a lot to do with your choices. You want something that will last. If you choose the cheapest lumber, you have a cheap deck. You get what you pay for, so choosing the type of wood your deck will be built from is an important choice.

If you are going to build your deck yourself, you will still need permits and there are a lot of how to guides out there that can help you with each stage of the process.

Building it yourself will give you an enormous sense of pride and even more enjoyment knowing you built it. However, it requires skills you may not have. I don’t advise you to build your own deck if you are not familiar with building and carpentry in general.

I hope this article has helped you learn at least the basics of getting your deck project going. A beautiful deck is one of the greatest additions you will ever have for your home. Enjoy your new deck!

He also actively participates in an article directory at articlemotron.com/ articlemotron.com that has current and up to date information on many topics.

One of the most enjoyable additions people are putting on their homes is an outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are so pleasant because so many of the features that you have in your indoor kitchen can be applied to an outdoor kitchen. In fact if you are considering an outdoor kitchen you can plan it so that everything you need is outside then you will not have to be running in the side for anything. Outdoor kitchens will often have refrigerators, cabinets and even dishwashers! The design of your outdoor kitchen will only be limited by cost and your imagination.

One of the first things you will choose when planning your outdoor kitchen is what type of grill you would like. There are so many types of grills available you can go plain or fancy, whatever your heart desires. There are even elaborate grills that will have side burners and storage space. These types of grills are very convenient because you will be able to grill your meat while at the same time boil some vegetables without having to run inside to keep an eye on what you have going on the stove. Everything will now be outside within easy reach.

Because of the demand for outdoor kitchen appliances some interesting things have come on the market. One of these is called Drinkman Backyard Kitchen. This is a combination unit that includes a sink that can be hooked up to a garden hose, cabinet and grill and these sell for around $350.

The U-Line Echelon series of refrigerator is specifically designed for using outside. It has sturdy insulation and wiring which are all excellent things to have when you’re going to use a refrigerator outside. The cost of this is around $1300.

Because of the popularity of outdoor kitchens, there is virtually nothing that you will not be able to find to supply your outdoor kitchen. There are many things that can be built and there are also many things that you can buy prefabricated. It all depends on how fancy you want to get and how much money you want to spend. Of course, for the right price, anything can be purchased for your outdoor kitchen.

When you are designing your outdoor kitchen of good way to stay within budget is to sit down and figure out exactly what it is that you are going to really need for your kitchen. If you are really on a budget and concerned about cost, you do not have to get too fancy to enjoy a beautiful outdoor kitchen.

Posted:26 February, 2009 by admin

The way the flooring space in the home is decorated helps to add something special to the house as well as completing the look. Having the right flooring is essentially important and can make or break the way the room looks. It has replaced carpets in many homes to offer a clean floor space with many great benefits. One great benefit about laminate flooring is that it is easier to clean so if you spill something you can easily mop it up. On the other hand if you spill something on a carpet then it can be a lot harder to clean it up.

As well as being easy on maintenance, it is also great for allergy sufferers. With carpets, dust mites, and other things that trigger off allergies lurk around in them. Also, there are so many different styles of laminate around that will suit any room that you use it in.

What to Consider When Buying Laminate Flooring

There are a few things that you should consider when buying laminate flooring for the rooms in your home. Firstly you need to look at the pros and cons of laminate flooring and decide whether or not it is for you. If you decide it is for you then it is best to get the exact measurements for the room, otherwise you could become unstuck later on.

When it comes to choosing laminate flooring, you need to make the right decision as you will be investing quite a bit of money into it. You need to find flooring that will complement your room so the style and color is very important.

What you need to do is to have a look at the different colors available and then decide what one will best suit the color scheme of the room and furniture within it. There are so many different colors out there to choose from which can make it harder to find one to suit you. Just take your time finding the perfect color for your room and then find out how many packs you need. You need to make sure that you get enough packs because if you need more later, they may have sold out and then you are left with gaps.

Overall laminate flooring can really brighten up any home and make it look modern and clean. However, you will need to take measurements to check that you are getting the right size for your room.

In 1994 I purchased a Dremel kit and a version of this chuck was included. I was quite excited as those who have worked with the fixed-size collets know how pesky they are, especially for small drill bits.

ohmi Vibration. I contacted Dremel Manufacturing and they, in 1995, had withdrawn this chuck as it was "too heavy" and "did not run true." They were glad to send me a package of fixed collets (but, having about fifteen different Dremels — AC and battery), I have enough collets, thank you.

Several years passed and then I saw that the adjustable chuck was again provided. I have one and will get more … Dremel has solved the ‘balance’ issues which, are mighty, given the mass of this steel and speeds of 30K RPM.

Also, I am a fan of the 50-bit box sets of carbide drills. When Harbor Freight sold these at half price, $4, I bought eight boxes. However, if you’ve tried these, you know that using such bits on metals, even ’soft’ metals, they break easily.

Using the variable chuck I devised a solution. If you have ever tried to deal with a carbide drill, broken off in a drill hole that is critical, you will mightily appreciate this … so … for $9.95, check or Paypal, I’ll provide instructions and 2 additional components that virtually eliminate breakage.

And, if you haven’t tried such a drill, for $12.95 I will send the instructions, kit, and 3 carbide drills for you to try. Quite honestly, if you have not had the delight of using a carbide to drill, say, medium-hard steel, or even a printed circuit board, you will be very pleased.

it may vary, but mine is nicely centered, no wobble. doesn’t hold quite as snug as a collet.

Review date : 2007-08-23
This item works great. My only question is why doesn’t the manufacturer provide it as a stock item with all its tools?

Review date : 2007-08-21
I began using the Multipro Chuck as soon as I got it! No need to switch collets and it will hold the tiniest bit. It is just what I needed to interchange brand accessories.
Love it, love it!

Review date : 2007-07-16
This is a really nice idea from Dremel that is supposed to make changing bits a lot faster. And that it does. Plus it is very well made. However, I stopped using it as no matter how hard you tighten it, it loosens up and the bit begins to wobble (not a good thing at 5000 rpm). Then you have to stop and retighten. So it’s too much of a bother. I do not recommend this item.

The Easy Way To Install Vinyl Flooring

Posted:26 February, 2009 by admin

Installing vinyl flooring is one of those home improvement projects that is well within the ability of the average homeowner to accomplish. It may seem a little intimidating at first, but once you have done just one room you should have the confidence to be able to tackle almost any vinyl flooring job. Here is the easy way to install vinyl flooring in your home.

First of all, your flooring material needs to be as warm as possible when you install it if you want it to go down correctly. So if the weather has been cold outside, it may be a good idea to leave your vinyl flooring in a warm room for a couple of days to let it actually heat up and become more pliable before you actually start to lay it down.

But once you are ready to get started, just simply roll the vinyl out into the room and see how it lays. Usually it’s best to align the vinyl pattern with the most dominant wall, or the most visible wall in the room first and then work out from there. So do that and see how the vinyl fits with the rest of the room. If it all looks like it’s going well, you can actually start to trim off the excess around the room. Just be sure that all areas of the room are well covered before you start trimming.

Generally speaking, a 2 -3 inch overlap is sufficient when you’re trimming in the room. Once you have all of your general trim cuts made, and the excess vinyl has been removed, you can now start to roughly cut in the corners of the room to make sure that the vinyl will lay nice and flat up against all of the walls.

Now here is where a lot of folks have trouble with vinyl flooring. If there are fixtures in the room, like a sink or toilet for instance, they don’t know how to cut around these obstacles. Actually though, there is a very simple and easy way to solve that vinyl flooring problem. What you need to do is to make a paper template of the floor before you lay the vinyl down in the area where the obstacles are.

This paper template needs to be made of very solid and tough paper that will not rip and tear easily. If you use the toilet as an example, you lay enough paper to cover one half of the toilet’s footprint on the floor and cut the paper in so that it fits up nice and tight to the edge of the toilet. Then you use another piece of paper to do the same on the other half of the toilets footprint.

Then you can remove the paper, tape both sides together and it will give you a perfect pattern for the bottom of the toilet so that you can make a good, clean cut on the vinyl that will fit exactly right when you lay the vinyl down. Just repeat this process for each fixture in the room that cannot be removed, like a sink or tub.

Once you have the vinyl cut out in advance for all of the obstacles in the room and generally cut in for each corner of the room, you can now put down your vinyl adhesive and began to install the flooring itself. Be sure to use a utility knife that is both safe and sharp, as a dull knife will create more problems than it is worth. Make your final cuts up against the walls and finalize any trimming that needs to be done around the room fixtures, and you should be done.

Then just be sure to give the floor enough time to dry out thoroughly before opening it up for regular traffic. If you use these suggestions for installing a vinyl floor, it should be a simple and easy task to complete.

Color Help: Many Factors Affect Color Preference

Posted:26 February, 2009 by admin

Understanding color psychology helps home makers choose colors for home decorating.

Color affects human beings every day of their lives, even during their very earliest childhood. In fact, studies have shown that babies respond more readily to bright, primary colors than to pastel colors.

The favorite color of most preschool children, up to the age of five, is bright red. Young children, between five and ten years old, show a preference for bright yellow. Adult women generally prefer blue-based colors, whereas men tend to prefer yellow-based tints.

Even education levels and the degree of sophistication seem to affect people’s color preferences. In general, highly educated and sophisticated people favor complex colors, while those with less education and lower income favor low intensity, simple colors.

Ethnic Traditions Affect Color Preferences

Our personal history also has a significant influence on our color preferences, and using heritage colors has been proven to make people feel more contented by making them feel more connected to their ancestry.

Colors and Climates

Climate affects color preferences, too, and people respond differently to various colors, depending upon the climatic conditions in which they live. For example, Scandinavians have a preference for light yellows, bright whites, and sky blues, in contrast to their long, dark winter nights. San Franciscans, who live in an area that is often foggy and overcast, generally aren’t fond of gray, but gray is a popular color among people in Miami.

Historic Colors

Color preferences have also changed over the course of history. In the mid-1800s, very bright colors were popular, but they were replaced by more subdued tertiary colors such as muddy reds, greens, browns, blues, pinks, and ambers in the 1870s and 1880s. The darkest shades could be found in dining rooms.

Pastel and cream colors came back into fashion in the 1890s, and were popular during the latter part of Queen Victoria’s reign. But as fashions changed and furniture began to become more ornate, heavier, and more elaborate, room colors also began to change, becoming richer and darker, although Victorian bedrooms remained light and cheerful.

Color affects human beings in many ways, on both the conscious and subconscious levels, every day of our lives, and a thorough understanding of the effects of color is very important when making interior design decisions for the home.

Caring For The Kitchen Cabinet Hinge - 3 Tips

Posted:25 February, 2009 by admin

The kitchen cabinet hinge is probably the most neglected and terribly underestimated part of the whole furniture. This stems partly from the fact that it is the least seen of all parts. However, you have to realize that the kitchen cabinet hinge is probably one of the most crucial parts of the structure.

Without the kitchen cabinet hinge, the door would not be able to move. Once the kitchen cabinet hinge goes, the rest go down with it. Because of this, it is important to learn how to take proper care of the kitchen cabinet hinge. Here are a few pointers:

1. Oil

You should never underestimate the usefulness of a good lubricant. Proper oiling of the kitchen cabinet hinge ensures its smooth action. This means that you will be able to prevent that irritating creaking noise that happens when you open the kitchen cabinet door. Oil also prevents rust from accumulating as it prevents moisture from accumulating in the surface of the kitchen cabinet hinge.

How often should one oil the kitchen cabinet hinge? Well, you should do it as often as possible in order to make sure that no rough spots are exposed which could eventually damage the hinge. The kitchen cabinet hinge should be well oiled in the middle part where the two sides of the hinge are joined.

2. Right pressure direction

One of the most common causes of broken kitchen cabinet hinges stems from the fact that most kitchen cabinets are built low in the ground. Whenever people open these types of kitchen cabinets, they tend to pull them with a force that is directed slightly upwards.

This means that the proper direction of the kitchen cabinet hinge is not followed. In turn, this means that undue stress is placed on the hinge. It may not seem obvious at first, but the kitchen cabinet hinge is slowly becoming bent out of its proper structure.

3. Keep it dry

You should remember that the hinge is only as strong as the wood that it supports. For this reason, you also have to learn how to keep the wood itself dry. This helps make sure that you avoid the wood from rotting and thus, letting go of the hinge.

These three tips ought to help you take care of that seemingly insignificant yet truly important kitchen cabinet hinge.

Discount Cork Flooring

Posted:25 February, 2009 by admin

Traditional flooring is not an option anymore for many homes because it attracts dust and requires high maintenance, among other disadvantages. Cork flooring is the best alternative because it is easy to care for, simple yet impressive in appearance, and gives interiors a real lift. Moreover, the installation of cork flooring is so uncomplicated, with no messy or smelly, polluting glues.

The flooring even comes in “do-it-yourself” packages and can be installed right on top of the existing flooring. Whether one wants an outstanding room or just a low-cost flooring alternative that is easy to maintain, cork is the best choice. Most top-quality flooring such as cork is available at wholesale prices. That is as much of a discount one can expect in many instances.

Cork flooring has been used in commercial spaces for years. One commonly cited example is the Toronto Stock Exchange building. The cork flooring did not negatively impact the joints of traders who were up and about the livelong day. It also made for a more serene indoor atmosphere as opposed to most other traditional flooring solutions. During the 1950s, cork floors were installed in public spaces such as restaurants and gyms because people spent a lot of time standing in these places.

As the time went by, manufacturers of cork flooring tried to bring down costs by replacing huge tiles with a veneer pattern on the face of a composition cork base and by reducing the thickness of the tiles from four to two millimeters. These experiments produced undesirable results such as breaking of tiles during installation. As a result, cork flooring sales declined and the industry earned a bad name.

Through the 1990s, however, the sale of cork tiles rose significantly. The mistakes of the past were corrected and manufacturers made sure the product was high in quality. Today installation can be done with little or no trouble, highlighting the benefits of the product in the process.
