Rustic charm is something that has gotten a lot of press lately. Some people like to feel like they’re getting away from it all and living like an early American family. This type of decoration includes a lot of use of wood and very woodsy colors. There is a lot of use of patterns and decorative accessory pieces that display some sort of woodsy animal.

When trying to create a rustic feel in your home there are a few key elements that you’ll want to include. If there’s no exposed wood in your home, find a way to incorporate it. Exposed wood is very important to the cabin style feel of a home. If you ask most people what they think of when they picture a cabin style home, I would be willing to bet that at least nine out of ten would bring up something about a log cabin.

Cabins are seen to be part of nature, when decorating, you want to bring that nature to your home.

If there is no exposed wood in your home, you’ll have find ways to supplement through decoration. This can most easily be achieved through the use of knickknacks. For the animal lover, there are all kinds of statues carved out of wood or mounted on wood. These would add wood into your home which will help you to create the atmosphere you’re looking for. Another addition that you may want to think about in order to create the woodsy feel would be paneling. Standard paneling can come in a rich brown color that will make you feel like you’re outside among nature rather than the stark white of drywall that reminds you constantly that this is a manmade product.

Another requirement for the cabin style home would be the use of animals in several of your serving pieces, as part of the decorations in the home, and at least one animal as a pet, more if possible. Most napkin and paper towel makers have pictures of nature on their products from time to time. These can be wonderfully decorative as well as useful items for the home.

A trademark piece of a cabin style home would be the use of plaid material in places throughout the house. The plaid is probably something like a red, green, and brown, and could be on the tablecloth, adorning the windows, or napkins and tablecloths on the dinner table. This will be displayed with much care and will sit perfectly where the decorator has decided will look good.

A cabin style look will be very inviting to others and warming when they reach your home. If you cannot often get out to nature, this is a great way to bring nature to you.

Hand-carved wooden furniture is far superior to laminate, which is seen in most store-bought furniture today. It has style and class that the mass-produced stuff doesn’t. In Mexico, classically-trained woodworkers produce some of the most beautiful furniture, but few get to see it due to lack of publicity.

There are different styles of Mexican-made wood furniture, from rustic to highly ornate. The skilled craftsmen use different woods such as mesquite, alder, pine and more. The craftsmanship put into each piece is outstanding. When I lived in Mexico, I was browsing shops in downtown Cancun (off the beaten path in a residential area) and came across a warehouse stacked high with furniture. Walking around in there, I was amazed to find a world of high-end artistic woodwork, reasonably priced, and carved in different traditional Mexican motifs. There were Mayan hieroglyphs carved onto doors, the Aztec calendar fancifully done all in inlaid wood for a coffee table, as well as countless other beautiful handmade cupboards, kitchen sets, armoires, tables and more. It was a designer’s fairyland, with both naturally stained wood, or painted designs, for those who like their furniture more colorful.

Each strain of designs depends on the individual craftsmen, as they all have their own styles and specialties. Many styles of work I saw depicted flowers, native Mexican history, animals, and lovely traditional European designs. Working with handed-down carving skills that most likely originated in Spain and in other parts of Europe, these craftsman charge relatively little money for all the time and work involved in their creations. Woodworking is very labor-intensive, one piece of furniture or a really ornate door can take a month or more to complete, depending on its complexity.

For the home consumer looking to buy this kind of furniture, a trip to Mexico is no longer neccessary. All you need is to search importers and stores on the internet nowadays. When searching, be as specific as possible in what you are looking for, since most Mexican furniture seen on searches is of the rustic style. Also, look at websites for the craftsmen themselves, to cut out the middlemen and deal directly with the woodworking studios yourself. Custom pieces can be commissioned this way, and prices can usually be negotiated. When I was in Mexico, I commissioned a woodworker to make me a few tables, and had to dicker fairly hard for a good price. But, the work he did for me was outstanding. When I moved back to the United States, I sold those tables for more than they cost me originally.

Even if you pay to have furniture shipped directly from Mexico, the quality of the work is worth the price. Most furniture you see in furniture chain stores in North America is mass-produced, and lacks the character and uniqueness of hand-crafted work. Before shelling out a large amount of money for an entertainment center, cabinet, kitchen table set or other furniture, contact one of the many sources for Mexican furniture. There are many options to choose from, from designs to wood choices. Fine Mexican wooden furniture is a cultural world of different designs meant for all tastes and budgets. If you buy one piece, chances are you will be hooked.

Uses of Natural Stone Landscaping

Posted:30 April, 2009 by admin

Natural stones are commonly used as materials to pave pathways and patios. Natural stone landscaping has become popular because of the versatility of these materials and their wide range of colors, shapes and textures. Natural stone landscaping can be incorporated in different styles of landscape design from rustic to classic or formal.

Natural stones are available at any masonry yards or building supply stores. Some examples of natural stones include cobblestones and pavers for walkways and driveways, crushed rock, cut stones, flagstone and Belgian blocks. The price of natural stones varies depending on your area and the area where the stone originated. For example, a ton of 1-inch thick Arizona flagstone costs $200 while a ton of 1-inch think Lompoc flagstone can cost a little over $300.

Natural stone landscaping is ideal for covering grounds and making surfaces very pleasing to the eye. Other common uses of natural stone include driveways, patio decks, steps, benches and others.

In natural stone landscaping, the choice of stone depends on the intended use. For instance, entryways, reception and entertainment areas should use stones with smooth surfaces to suit all kinds of foot wear, especially high heels. However, select stones for steps that are not slippery and offer some traction when the surface becomes wet.

Likewise, smooth stones are also ideal for patios or any area used for sitting and dining that requires a level ground surface. Additionally, in eating areas make sure the stone is not porous or will not absorb oils and stains.

Color is another important aspect in natural stone landscaping because it affects the overall look and feel of the space. To brighten heavily shaded areas, you can use light-colored stones such as Idaho quartzite. On the other hand, you can use dark gray or chocolate colored stones to tone down the brightness in sunny areas.

Natural stone landscaping is useful not only to enhance walkways and similar areas but also to beautify other features in the landscape such as ponds, waterfalls, retaining walls and many others. Natural stones can also be used to prevent soil erosion and as safety blocks in driveways.

The growing popularity of natural stone landscaping is due to the fact that stones fit the look of most homes. It works well on both formal and informal landscape designs. The key is to choose from the wide variety of natural stones available which ones will suit the specific style of your home and landscape.

A few years ago one of our large mature honey locust trees (50′ tall) fell onto our house during a pretty ferocious windstorm. Unfortunately for us we didn’t own a chainsaw, but our neighbor had this little monster and boy was it a lifesaver!

We were outside cutting the tree off the house for a good six hours straight and this thing didn’t slowdown the least bit. Not once did it bog down or couldn’t make it through the hard wood of the locust.

The size of the saw was perfect, compact enough to get into a lot of tight spots, but large enough for the big branches.

The other nice thing was that when you released the trigger the chain stopped spinning pretty quickly, unlike a lot of gas and electric chainsaws I’ve used. This is especially great when you are dangling off a ladder/halfway up a tree and using the chainsaw one handed, it makes it a whole lot safer and reduces the chance and likelihood of accidents.

This brings me to another thing I like about it, it’s fairly lightweight BUT has exceptional build quality, especially for the price (which was surprising)! Again not once during the six hours of constant use did I feel like it was unsafe or was going to break, it’s built solid!

Of course a saw is only as good as it’s chain, so keep it sharp and this baby will continue to run like a champ.

Whether you are pruning dead branches, removing unwanted growth, or taking down an entire tree, this saw will deliver unsurpassed performance year after year.

So to recap…

Pros:
Lightweight
Exceptional build quality (built like a tank)
Consistently performs without hesitation, even after hours of constant use
Electric, so no mixing of oil and gas (yeah!)
Fiberglass extension pole provides safe and secure trimming, even when fully extended

Cons:
It’s electric so during a blackout it’s worthless (duh)
Small chain oil reservoir requires you to stop and fill it up more often, not a huge problem just something I thought I should mention

Planning to remodel, repair or build a new home? Looking for some terrific features to include that can save you tons of time in shortcuts, efficiencies and saved steps? We can help! We started collecting over 1,000 uncommon, affordable convenience built-ins in 1998, when we first began writing books and consulting to help people have truly extraordinary ? but affordable ? homes. Here are some of our favorite ideas that?ll change your life via the time they save you. Add any of these to your next project, and you?ll be on your way toward creating a home that?s truly beyond the ordinary!

? A shallow closet or weatherproof cabinet at every outdoor hose faucet, for storing a hose at an easy-to-reach height where it will stay relatively clean, out of sight and out of the way. No more risk of tripping over a hose left in a heap on the ground! (And even recoiling and flat hoses can be awkward and dirty to move from faucet to faucet, especially if they?re stored outdoors.) This makes gardening a snap, as well as hosing down the deck, patio or outdoor furniture, or washing windows. You?ll also want flooring inside that prevents the unavoidable drips from encouraging mold.

? A non-porous, nonskid, self-leveling garage floor coating, so that soil and oil can easily be hosed away. (If you have a drain in the floor and flooring that slopes toward it, use a similar coating that?s not self- leveling.)

? A sewing machine permanently plugged in and set up on a desk or inside a well-lit closet or alcove. Be sure there?s space behind the machine for the fabric from large projects to accumulate.

? Remote-controlled window shades, especially on hard-to-reach windows or skylights. Choose among remote controls that can be operated manually; via a timer or photocell; or through any on-site or off- site computer, personal digital assistant or cell phone. Besides being safer than attempting to reach out-of-the-way shades by hand, easy-to- maneuver shades help control light and heat in a room, minimize fading of a room?s or closet?s contents, and the automatic or off-site controls can make an empty house appear occupied.

? Dedicated space for wrapping gifts that?s near where you store your wrapping supplies and tools. No more hauling stuff around!

? A doorbell intercom outside the door that can be answered from every telephone in the house (also via your cell phone while you?re out). No more dropping everything to run to answer the door!

? Shallow shelves with only one row deep of canned or dry goods, medicines, supplies, tools or equipment, for instant identification of and access to whatever?s stored. These can often be tucked into a space that?s otherwise unused.

? At least one full bathroom on every level of the house.

? A laundry chute from closets, cabinets or bathrooms to a laundry room on a lower level. No more hauling dirty laundry down stairs when gravity will do the job! And no more dropping items on the way to the laundry room that you might trip over!

? A pot-filler faucet attached to a wall near your cooking burners, that swivels into various positions as well as out of the way. No more moving heavy pots of water from the sink to the stove!

Make A Style Statement With Swedish Furniture

Posted:30 April, 2009 by admin

The 60’s experienced a very different kind of trend, it displayed a very carefree & funky attitude. This attitude reflected in the furniture’s too, hence it could be rightly referred to as the 60’s furniture.

In 1952 the nation saw yet another funky style of furniture that became very popular. It was termed as the ‘G plan’.

The popularity of the funky furniture made it a high demand commodity, and limited manufacturing made collecting the whole set equally difficult. This scarcity forced customers to resort to purchasing the consecutive set and blend it with the original set and the result was satisfying. This gave birth to the mix and match concept, which was later, named as the ‘G’ Plan trend.

The mix and match trend proved to be a blessing in disguise for homeowners. It spared them from spending a fortune to purchase the entire set. This concept gave them liberty to experiment with different sets and create their own style.

Scandinavia emerged as the top manufacturer of the G plan furniture. Mostly retro styled furniture was made from Swedish pine, commonly known as summa and for the more modern designs the dark Tola wood from Africa was used.

The 60’s saw a growing trend of Use and throw attitude among the younger generation, even though it lasted for a short period it left its impression on the furniture market too. Everything from blow up cupboards to chairs and other furniture items were available in the market hence discarding outdated items was no more a big problem. But a survey conducted proved that evening this era, the love and respect for wooden furniture had not reduced.

G plan furniture manufacturers always embossed their creation with a gold or red stamps on its base to mark its authenticity. Nowadays its difficult to find these authentic classy creations, but one can easily shop for the original G plan furniture’s on online auction sites like Ebay and other listed stores, although it can prove to be a bit too expensive owing to its high shipping charges its definitely worth trying. Looking out for these funky furniture’s at garage sales, car boot sales, weekend markets and charity shops is a much better option.

Advantages Of DVD Duplication

Posted:29 April, 2009 by admin

Did you know that duplication is the best for quantities up to a thousand and for faster turn-around time?

The master disc is duplicated onto a high quality media to ensure that the end product is compatible with the most number of electronic hardware. All master copies should be tested in a lot of playback devices prior to DVD duplication.

Multi-session is the term used for the ways of writing information in different increments. This is not recommended, though, since many CDR and CDRW drives do not have the proper support for multi session CDs. On the other hand, almost any CDR drive, CD player, or CD Video player will play the recorded CDR.

There is no truth to the rumor that CDs and DVDs that are duplicated are not as reliable as CDs and DVDs that are replicated. In many cases, DVDs were invented for the storage of audio, video and data, despite the current issues on incompatibility with recordable DVDs. Audio CDs are the byproducts of the data CD. Similar to many new technologies, there were kinks to iron out when the CD-Rs were mass produced. To place their products in the marketplace quickly, some manufacturers produced below-par products which have trouble loading audio and keep the CDRom spinning in an audio only player.

Today, CDRs are manufactured under stricter guidelines. Although there are still inferior brands of CDRs and DVDRs, choosing a reputable duplication company that uses only professional equipment and high-quality media will result in a quality product. Here, the finished product is verified with the duplication equipment to completely match the master copy.

CD/DVD duplication and replication both have their advantage in terms of cost and quality. The customer will choose the best method of manufacturing their products. Sales people are there to help customers choose the best method for their quality demands and budget restrictions.

Working Safely with Concrete

Posted:29 April, 2009 by admin

Concrete is easy to work with, versatile, durable, and economical. While observing a few basic precautions, it is also safe-one of the safest building materials known. Over the years, relatively few people involved in mixing, handling, and finishing concrete have experienced injury. Outlined below are some simple suggestions-protection, prevention and common sense precautions-useful to anyone working with Portland cement and concrete.

The jobsite should be adequately marked to warn the public of construction activities. Fences, barricades, and warning signs can be used to restrict public access. The work area should be kept clean and uncluttered to minimize hazards to workers. Remember: safety is the job of everyone onsite.

Protect Your Head and Eyes

Construction equipment and tools represent constant potential hazards to busy construction personnel. It is therefore recommended that some sort of head protection, such as a hard hat or safety hat, be worn when working any construction project, large or small.

Proper eye protection is essential when working with cement or concrete. Eyes are particularly vulnerable to blowing dust, splattering concrete, and other foreign objects. On some jobs it may be advisable to wear full-cover goggles or safety glasses with side shields. Remember that sight is precious. Protect the head and eyes by using proper safety equipment and remaining alert.

Protect Your Back

All materials used to make concrete - Portland cement, coarse aggregate, sand, and water-can be quite heavy even in small quantities. When lifting heavy materials, your back should be straight, legs bent, and the weight between your legs as close to the body as possible. Do not twist at the waist while lifting or carrying these items. Rather than straining your back with a heavy load, get help. Remember to use your head, not your back.

Let mechanical equipment work to your advantage by placing concrete as close as possible to its final position. After the concrete is deposited in the desired area by chute, pump, or wheelbarrow, it should be pushed-not lifted-into final position with a shovel. A short-handled, square-end shovel is an effective tool for spreading concrete, but special concrete rakes or come-alongs also can be used. Excessive horizontal movement of the concrete not only requires extra effort, but may also lead to segregation of the concrete ingredients.

Avoid actions that cause dust to become airborne. Local or general ventilation can control exposures below applicable exposure limits; respirators may be used in poorly ventilated areas, where exposure limits are exceeded, or when dust causes discomfort or irritation. Avoid prolonged exposure to dust.

Protect Your Skin

When working with fresh concrete, care should be taken to avoid skin irritation or chemical burns. Prolonged contact between fresh concrete and skin surfaces, eyes, and clothing may result in burns that are quite severe, including third-degree burns. If irritation persists consult a physician. For deep burns or large affected skin areas, seek medical attention immediately.

The A-B-Cs of fresh concrete’s effect on skin are:

Abrasive Sand contained in fresh concrete is abrasive to bare skin. Basic & Portland cement is alkaline in nature, so wet Caustic concrete and other cement mixtures are strongly basic (pH of 12 to 13). Strong bases-like strong acids-are harmful, or caustic to skin. Drying Portland cement is hygroscopic-it absorbs water. In fact, Portland cement needs water to harden. It will draw water away from any material it contacts-including skin.

Clothing worn as protection from fresh concrete should not be allowed to become saturated with moisture from fresh concrete because saturated clothing can transmit alkaline or hygroscopic effects to the skin.

Waterproof gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants should be worn. If you must stand in fresh concrete while it is being placed, screeded, or floated, wear rubber boots high enough to prevent concrete from getting into them.

The best way to avoid skin irritation is to wash frequently with pH neutral soap and clean water.

Placing and Finishing

Waterproof pads should be used between fresh concrete surfaces and knees, elbows, hands, etc., to protect the body during finishing operations. Eyes and skin that come in contact with fresh concrete should be flushed thoroughly with clean water. Clothing that becomes saturated from contact with fresh concrete should be rinsed out promptly with clear water to prevent continued contact with skin surfaces. For persistent or severe discomfort, consult a physician.

When working with fresh concrete, begin each day by wearing clean clothing and conclude the day with a bath or shower.

Air Purifier At Home Depot Discovery

Posted:29 April, 2009 by admin

It seems that no matter where we go, the air we are breathing is polluted to some degree. Things are floating in the air that we cannot see. Things that can cause health problems to us. An air purifier at home depot can change the air you are breathing, and make it purer and safer. Breathing is such a normal thing for us, that we just don’t think about it. It’s not until we are having difficulty breathing, that we all of a sudden become aware. What we really need to become aware of is, what is the source of the problem. What is in the air that has caused the difficulty for breathing to occur. An air purifier at home depot can make the air you are breathing cleaner.

There are many things in the air that can cause difficulty breathing. Things such as smoke can be in the air for quite a while. An air purifier at home depot can get rid of smoke smell that lingers in the air. Smokers can carry the smoke smell on them where ever they go. It attaches itself to their clothes, their hair and their hands. What ever they touch you can pick up the smell. If you suffer from allergies, this alone can trigger an allergy attack and for some people even cause an asthma attack. An air purifier at home depot will filter the air you are breathing and separate the bad air from the good air. It captures the bad air in its filtering system and blows out good, clean, fresh air.

An air purifier at home depot will also get rid of dust and dust mites that float through the air. Things like dust can bring on an asthma attack, which will hinder your breathing. An asthma attack is caused from the airways becoming inflamed and making the air you breathe in, hard to get through. This will result in wheezing and gasping for breath. An air purifier at home depot traps the dust in its filter system and allows only good air to escape.

You can select an air purifier at home depot from a variety of choices. There are many different models to choose from. Some air purifiers have filtering systems that contain a filter you replace after a period of time and some have trays of some type in which you just wipe off. An air purifier at home depot can be found in different sizes as well. You will need to do some research as to which model may suit your needs.

This is a simple low teck product that does exactly what it is supposed to do. It sharpens the blades on a reel type mower. My mower’s blades were not in horrible condition and I cannot comment on how this product would perform on severly damaged blades. I was satisfied with the product, the instructions and the price.

This kit is essentially what anyone can do on their own but it is conveniently packaged. The goop everyone is referring to is essentially the same as automotive valve grinding compound (which you can get at most auto parts stores). I like the idea of using a power drill to turn the reel while it sharpens - so here’s an alternative for anyone who feels like taking a DIY approach:

1. Prop up the lawn mower so you can turn the reel by twirling the wheels.

2. Check the blades for nicks and burrs. If you find any, remove them with a file (hold file flat against blade and push away from spindle). I use a sharpening stone that fits my power drill but that’s b/c I’m lazy.

3. Check your bar alignment, it’ll be obvious if it’s off - it will hit the guide bar. If alignment is off, you need to fix the alignment with the screws at the end of the bar but hopefully it’s fine (if it turns with that cool whispy sound, then you’re fine).

4. Spread a thin & even coat of auto valve-grinding compound.

5. Take off a wheel and affix your power drill so that the blade turns and the grinding compound squeezes between the blades and the cutting bar. Go a few dozen times.

6. I reapply the grinding compound and do it again.

7. Check out the blades, which should be sharper then rinse the valve compound off the blades.

This is EASY and quick. I really like how the kit makes it a no brainer exercise and if you’re going to use a reel mower, use one with sharp blades.

Review date : 2008-08-23
I only gave it three stars and perhaps I’m not being fair but here’s why I’m not pleased with it: I bought the Gilmour 20" reel mower from Amazon.com and at the time of my purchase, they suggested I buy the sharpening kit too. Well, the hand crank from the sharpening kit does not fit the Gilmour mower. I’m sure it fits all the rest and probably works fine but I’m a bit ticked off at Amazon suggesting that I buy it. PS: The Gilmour did a great job for 15 - 20 cuts and then since then it seems like it needs to be sharpened because it’s missing too much of the grass.

Review date : 2008-07-22
did what it was suppose to mdo really worked well on sharping the blades on out reel mower

Review date : 2008-07-22
Go to your auto parts store and get some grinding compound for a fraction of the cost.

Also, for a much quicker sharpening session, remove both wheels, swap the gears so that the reel turns backwards, apply the compound, and walk the mower up and down the driveway. The backwards operation provides the backlapping to sharpen the reel and blade. Clean up the excess, and swap the gears back. Total time: less than 10 minutes.
