How To Clean Your Throw Rugs

Posted:30 June, 2009 by admin

Throw rugs are a handy way to cover wear, spruce up a room, or add warmth and comfort to hardwood floors. They are affordable and easy to find and you can choose from all types of patterns, designs, colors, and materials. Here’s how to clean your throw rugs and keep them looking fresh and new.

Throw rugs are very easy to care for. They require no special treatment or attention, unless of course you’ve purchased wool rugs or the manufacturers instructions give you specific directions for cleaning.

1. Vacuum

The single easiest way to keep your rugs looking fresh and new and extend their life is to vacuum them on a regular basis. Vacuuming pulls dirt away so it cannot get pushed deep into the fiber and wear the rug.

2. Check Tag

Read the tag for any special washing instructions. If you find none you can assume that our instructions will work.

3. Pretreat

If your throw rug has any stains pretreat it with any of the laundry stain removers or pretreatments available. Apply as you would with any other item. Then let soak for a few hours so that it can penetrate deep into the fiber.

4. Wash

Toss it in the washing machine in cold water. Use a mild laundry detergent and be sure it does not have any bleaching agents. These could fade the color of your rug. Even the bleach free ones can be harsh on some fabrics and are not recommended for your throw rugs if you want to keep the new looking. If your rug is too large for your washer locate a laundry mat that has the commercial size washers then take it there to wash.

5. Hang to Dry

Never throw your throw rug in the dryer. Always hang to dry. Hanging over the shower door works great as any water left in the material will drip into the shower. You can also hang over any other style of door, or lay flat to dry. If you lay flat to dry be sure to flip and move regularly otherwise the water will be wicked into the surface and it will take forever to dry.

6. Brush

Not only do you have to brush your pets, now you have to brush your rugs. Once your throw rug is dry take a comb or brush and gently work it through the rug brushing against it’s natural grain so it becomes full again.

A quick search online will reveal there are thousands of throw rug choices out there. You can also buy throw rugs at local carpet dealers. Stores like Walmart or Target offer some great prices on these style of rugs so be sure to check them out too!

Throw rugs are the perfect way to add to your home decor. As you can see from how to clean your throw rugs process they are not difficult to maintain. There also great because normally they are of a small to medium size so you can mix it up every now and then and rearrange them in your home.

Breathe New Life into Your Bathroom

Posted:30 June, 2009 by admin

Breathing new life and personality into your bathroom can be done in a snap! You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to redecorate the smallest room in your house. Just follow these simple tips and before you know it, you’ll be able to transform your bathroom into a lively, welcoming room.

Choosing Themes & Color Schemes

Themed bathrooms (such as dolphins, suns & moons, and lighthouses) have become very popular in recent years. Using a theme can spark new life in your bathroom and add a touch of your own personality and style. Choose a theme that appeals to you and run with it. Many department and home decor outlets now carry an amazing array of various themes for you to choose from. You can purchase themed products like toothbrush holders, shower curtains, waste basket, and printed towels.

Once you’ve chosen the theme of your bathroom, you’ll need to choose a color scheme that best suits your chosen theme. If you’re repainting the walls, use warm, soft colors accenting your theme. By using warm colors, you’re also counteracting the coldness of flooring and tile. You can even add a themed border around the top or middle of your walls for added flare by using a stencil to paint themed images or border wall paper.

Decorating Touches

- Using colorful rugs and towels that match your chosen theme will help to brighten your bathroom.

- Using brightly colored boxes or earth-toned baskets filled with items such as washcloths and soaps is a great way to organize your bathroom with style as you’re redecorating.

- If your bathroom has shelving system, arrange your towels so that they are displayed neatly and add more color to the room. Be sure all of your towels are either rolled or folded the same way!

A Few Final Tips

- If your bathroom is small, keep things simple. You can utilize more mirrors in a smaller bathroom to make it appear larger.

- Remember, don’t overdo your theme! You don’t want your bathroom to look overly busy.

- Use various textures in your bathroom for added warmth and to offset the shininess of tile and bathroom fixtures.

- Avoid using drab or dull colors. Use bright or pastel colors to give your bathroom more warmth and appeal.

By following these simple tips, you’ll be well on your way to redecorating your bathroom in a refreshing, new way without hassles or headaches!

Decorating With Art and Wall Color

Posted:30 June, 2009 by admin

Looking through decorating magazines, you can see that a dramatic color on the walls can unify the various pieces of art in the room. The most important thing in choosing a color for a room is to decide what color inspires you. Different colors create different moods. Use your own sense of style and aesthetics.

If you want to create a mood with a particular historical decorating style – like Art Deco, Italian Renaissance or even mid-century modern, follow the colors used in the furnishings and artwork from those eras. Go to a museum and take note of the colors on the walls. You can follow the look throughout your home with your artwork and frames if you want to keep to a theme.

Color symbolism and color psychology can contribute to how we select color in a room. It’s fascinating to learn why dining rooms work best with warm colors and bedrooms work best in quiet, serene colors. Some of the leading paint companies websites have some good reading material on these topics.

Keep it simple by using one prevailing color and then perhaps one or two accent colors. For color harmony, variations on complimentary colors like red and green, yellow and purple and blue and orange tend to work well in a room.

Try to understand the way colors work by studying a color wheel. Remember learning in school about primary (red, yellow and blue), secondary, and tertiary colors? Well, now you can apply those rules to decorating with art.

Fine art photographs look good on any background color. Traditionally, photo galleries were always painted a pristine white, but now just about anything goes as decorating styles have become more eclectic and personal.

Once you’ve considered all the factors, bring home paint chips from your local paint store. Study them at different times of the day in the room because light will affect how the color will look in the room.

Then, buy a quart of a color or two and test them on the walls or on poster size foam core, and study them in the light again.
And if the idea of four walls of red overwhelms you, try just painting one wall of that color first. Sometimes all you need is one wall of intense color for your art and the other walls can be white.

A few years ago one of our large mature honey locust trees (50′ tall) fell onto our house during a pretty ferocious windstorm. Unfortunately for us we didn’t own a chainsaw, but our neighbor had this little monster and boy was it a lifesaver!

We were outside cutting the tree off the house for a good six hours straight and this thing didn’t slowdown the least bit. Not once did it bog down or couldn’t make it through the hard wood of the locust.

The size of the saw was perfect, compact enough to get into a lot of tight spots, but large enough for the big branches.

The other nice thing was that when you released the trigger the chain stopped spinning pretty quickly, unlike a lot of gas and electric chainsaws I’ve used. This is especially great when you are dangling off a ladder/halfway up a tree and using the chainsaw one handed, it makes it a whole lot safer and reduces the chance and likelihood of accidents.

This brings me to another thing I like about it, it’s fairly lightweight BUT has exceptional build quality, especially for the price (which was surprising)! Again not once during the six hours of constant use did I feel like it was unsafe or was going to break, it’s built solid!

Of course a saw is only as good as it’s chain, so keep it sharp and this baby will continue to run like a champ.

Whether you are pruning dead branches, removing unwanted growth, or taking down an entire tree, this saw will deliver unsurpassed performance year after year.

So to recap…

Pros:
Lightweight
Exceptional build quality (built like a tank)
Consistently performs without hesitation, even after hours of constant use
Electric, so no mixing of oil and gas (yeah!)
Fiberglass extension pole provides safe and secure trimming, even when fully extended

Cons:
It’s electric so during a blackout it’s worthless (duh)
Small chain oil reservoir requires you to stop and fill it up more often, not a huge problem just something I thought I should mention

Smoke Detectors Are Now Required By Law!

Posted:30 June, 2009 by admin

By now, everyone should have at least one smoke detector somewhere in the home; and most folks have at least one on every level, including the basement.

But did you know…

* Pushing the test button only verifies that there is battery (or AC) power present. It DOES NOT PROVE that the detector is capable of sensing smoke.

* To test a smoke detector, hold a lit candle 6 inches below it. If the alarm doesn’t sound, blow out the candle and let the smoke drift into the detector. If it still doesn’t sound, check the power source.

* Homes with wired-in detectors should have a battery-powered unit as a back-up.

* Rechargeable batteries are NOT recommended for smoke detectors.

* When installing a smoke detector, avoid dead-air spaces in corners and at the very ends of hallways. Centre your smoke detector on a ceiling, keeping it at least 6 inches from any wall. Locate a wall-mounted unit one foot below the ceiling.

* Smoke detectors should be kept away from drafts at vents, doors and windows.

* The tops of stairwells and any hallways leading to bedrooms are the recommended locations, the latter being the most critical, and the site recommended by the National Fire Code.

* Carefully (gently) vacuum your detectors annually.

About one quarter of all the homes we inspect have improperly located or non-functioning smoke detectors, or none at all!

For those of you who make your decisions based on real information, here are some cool portable air conditioner facts.

A goldmine of enlightening information can be uncovered by visiting forums. For instance, when I wanted to tap into the experiences of actual portable air conditioner owners, all I had to do was Google “portable air conditioner forums” and Voila!, I had instant access to pages of relevant information from 3 different forums.

I encourage you to try this technique. Just substitute any generic product or service description for “portable air conditioners” plus the word “forums”.

What I uncovered was concerns over energy consumption, how energy consumption impacts circuit load, noise level, venting, the disposal of water from the dehumidifying process, and of course, price.

Portable Air Conditioner Energy Consumption -
In the United States, the average air conditioner runs 750 hours each year. Since air conditioners use a lot of electricity, their efficiency has become a public issue. The EER, or Energy Efficiency Rating, is the ratio of the Btu’s per hour to the number of watts the unit draws.

EER ratings of 7 or 8 are at the low end of energy efficiency. Many units have ratings around 12 which are good. The highest rated portable air conditioner I could find was the amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&tag=alternatiheat-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&location= amazon.com/Portable-Air-Conditioner/dp/B000A8D7X4/sr=8-1/qid=1153668635/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 Amcor AL10000E . It has an awesome EER of 16.6.

Portable Air Conditioner Circuit Load -
Before you start your search for a portable air conditioner, check your breaker box for the number of amps available to the room you want cooled. If you buy a unit that draws 14.5 amps on a 15 amp circuit, you’ll have the additional but unintended cooling effect of sitting in the dark while enjoying your new portable air conditioner.

How Noisy Is A Portable Air Conditioner?
Most portable air conditioners that deliver 14,000 Btu’s or less have a noise level around 50 decibels. This is comparable to the loudness of most refrigerators. At 60 decibels, a 16,000 Btu unit is slightly noisier. Think of what it’s like to watch TV in the kitchen while the fridge is running.

Portable Air Conditioner Venting -
There is some controversy as to whether a dual hose unit is superior to the single hose configuration. On one hand, a single hose unit will exhaust from the room some portion of the cool air it just produced.

On the other hand, a dual hose unit eliminates this problem, but the warmer unconditioned air used to cool their compressors results in slightly less efficiency. They also use two internal fans which result in slightly higher energy usage.

Another hot topic at the forums that people are venting about is having to wrap insulation around the hose of their single hose unit. This is done to prevent the hot exhaust hose from adding heat back into the room. Personally, I can’t think of anything better than duct tape wrapped around insulation to brighten up a room.

Water Water Everywhere -
Portable air conditioners offer three methods for disposing of the water extracted by the dehumidifier component.

The most convenient is auto evaporation which eliminates the need for drains or reservoirs. The reliability of this method varies from unit to unit.

The second method is direct drain using a hose attached to the unit. This can be problematic unless the unit is located near a floor drain. Not much chance of that, so you’ll have to use a bucket.

And finally, you get to empty the pan yourself. Just make sure the pan is large enough so the air conditioner doesn’t shut off in the middle of the night when the pan fills up.

Price -
I think price is a secondary consideration to efficiency. As usual, a higher priced unit that operates more efficiently will always end up costing less in the long run than a cheaper, less efficient model.

Portable air conditioners are much less efficient than comparable window units and cost roughly twice as much. What you’re paying for is the flexibility to roll it from one room to another or into a closet for easy storage.

Another Option to Consider -
For the price of a portable air conditioner you might be able to buy a window air conditioner AND a new window to put it in.

How to Get More Space in the Garage

Posted:29 June, 2009 by admin

It doesn’t seem to matter how big your garage is: you can always fill it up with stuff. Sure, you can hire some professional organizer to come help you clear a path to the car doors, but that costs money. How about I just give you some tips instead? You don’t even need to pay me $100 an hour, or whatever it is de-clutter-ganizers are making these days. So, without further ado, here are five ways to clear up space in the garage:

1. Hang things from the ceiling.

Garages usually have plenty of headroom, so that leaves many cubic feet of space you can exploit. Is your family full of sports fanatics? You can buy ceiling-mounted racks designed specifically for outdoor recreational equipment, everything from snowboards and bicycles to canoes and kayaks. You can also get platforms that go up and down with a crank of a lever. These allow you to tuck hundreds of pounds of junk–er, valuable family heirlooms–up amongst the rafters.

2. Make use of wall space.

You’ve probably got at least one pegboard in the tool area of your garage, but there’s no reason to limit yourself. You can attach your own homemade brackets, nails, and pegboards, or you can buy special panels designed to support hooks, baskets, and shelves.

3. Cabinets are for garages too.

Most garages have enough room on the sides or in the back to accommodate banks of cabinets, while still leaving enough space to get in and out of the car. Even if there’s only enough room for 12″ deep cabinets, that’s still a lot of extra storage if you run them from floor to ceiling. Also, cabinets look nice–all your clutter gets hidden behind the doors, where you don’t have to look at it every time you drive inside.

4. If you have too many vehicles, try a car lift.

You’ve got a good 10-12 feet of height in your garage, right? And the average car is less than five feet high, right? Well, there are systems out there that let you stack them. Granted, these are pricey, and raising and lowering the top car can be a hassle if the vehicle is driven every day, but if there’s a car you don’t drive that often but that takes up space, it might be something to look into. Car lifts can make a lot of sense in houses with one-car garages.

5. Think garage sale.

If you’ve tried your hardest to find storage space for everything, but you’re still tripping over stuff, it may be time to clean the garage out. Chances are you have toys, boxes, tools, etc. that you bought many moons ago (and which your family probably hasn’t used in almost as many moons) that you don’t need to keep around. So, clean it out and throw it out, or better yet, have a garage sale. At least then you make some money and are rewarded for your efforts.

Hardwood is still the homeowner’s favorite choice of flooring and caring for it takes minimal effort. Unlike laminate or engineered wood, hardwood can be refinished many times, and will add years of beauty and warmth to your home, as well as increase its value and speed its resale. Ongoing floor care is needed to keep your hardwood looking its best, however, and there are four major aspects of hardwood floor care:

1. Hardwood floor cleaning

2. Hardwood floor repair

3. Hardwood floor refinishing

4. Hardwood floor protection

Clean Your Hardwood Regularly

Knowing how to clean hardwood floors is important because the bane of hardwood is dirt and grit, which will scratch and mark the floor if not removed promptly. As well, dust is seen more easily on wood floors than it is on linoleum or on carpet, especially in the sunlight and especially if the floor has a dark stain. Hardwood floor care, therefore, means sweeping and dusting regularly – once a week, at least, and after any event that leaves dirt and grit behind. Regular household dusting and cleaning products will cause damage, however, and you must use only products specifically designed for hardwood. Vacuuming is preferable to sweeping because it allows the dirt and dust to be pulled from between the boards, but use a vacuum with a bare floor attachment, not a beater bar, which can damage the wood.

When a more in-depth cleaning is required, use a cleaning method appropriate to the finish on your floor. If your floor has a glossy finish, it means that polyurethane, or a water-based urethane, or a similar finish has been used to form a protective barrier over the hardwood. If it has a matte finish, it means that the floor is protected with a penetrating seal of oil and/or wax. On neither of these finishes is water an acceptable cleaning agent, but both of them can accept a surface, damp-mop cleaning, which means the mop is not wet but only damp to the touch. You are cleaning only the surface and not using enough water to penetrate even the oiled-and-waxed hardwood. When using a damp mop on oil and waxed hardwood, you can add a little neutral ph hardwood floor cleaner to the water before dipping the mop into it. A floor with a protective glossy barrier can accept a generic hardwood floor cleaner providing it doesn’t contain any wax or oil.

The don’ts are every bit as important as the do’s in hardwood floor care;

1. Don’t use ammonia, regular floor cleaners, household cleaners, or dusting products on hardwood.

2. Never use wax on a floor with a urethane or other glossy finish.

3. Never wash hardwood; use only a slightly damp mop.

Repair Any Damage to Your Floors as Soon as Possible

In most cases, when your oil and waxed hardwood floors have suffered surface damage, you have to remove the finish with a wax or oil stripper before dealing with the damage. After completing the repair, you then re-wax or re-oil the area. Surface damage occurs less often on hardwood protected by polyurethane or a similar type of sealer, and when it does, the damage is not as obvious. When repairing floors with such finishes, strip the finish from the entire board or boards where the damage has occurred. Make your repairs and then apply a finishing product to those boards that is consistent with the rest of the floor.

1. Water marks: Remove the protective finish, rub the marks with fine grade steel wool. Repeat if necessary, clean, and then refinish.

2. Burn marks: Lightly sand the area, use a damp cloth to pick up the grit, and then refinish as desired.

3. Scratches and gouges: Conceal shallow scratches with matching wood putty or a putty stick. After the area is dry, sand and refinish.

Refinishing Your Worn Hardwood Floors Will Recapture Their Original Beauty and Value

In a home with shabby hardwood floors, the biggest improvement you can make is to refinish the floors. Begin by making any necessary repairs, and then removing all the furniture and drapes and sealing the vents and registers in the room so that you won’t spread dust throughout the house. Sanding floors is easiest to do with a drum sander and an edging machine for the sides and corners of the room. You can rent these machines, and it is a good idea to rent a buffer or floor polisher at the same time. Plan to make three passes with your sanding equipment, using increasingly finer sandpaper each time. Vacuum carefully and pick up every bit of fine dust and grit with tacking cloths. All dust and dirt must be removed. You can now apply a stain if you wish or you can leave the natural color and design of the wood – such as the popular oak, maple, or cherry – to be displayed.

Polish and clean the dust and dirt from the floor again, and then apply your sealer – a polyurethane or a water-based urethane that provides a protective barrier, or oil and wax, which penetrates the wood and protects from within. Carefully read all the information accompanying each product, follow the safety advice, and apply as many coats of stain or sealer as suggested by the manufacturer of the products you are using.

Hardwood Floor Care Means Providing Ongoing Floor Protection

As well as regular cleaning, and repairing and refinishing when necessary, there are a number of protective measures you can take to preserve the beauty of your hardwood:

1. Use area rugs and mats in high traffic areas and sites of frequent spills (e.g., in front of the stove, sink, and refrigerator). Move these rugs frequently so that these areas of the floor remain the same color as the exposed floor. As well, it is best to choose cotton mats as they do not trap water under them as rubber or vinyl might.

2. Keep high-heeled shoes in good repair and avoid using stiletto heels.

3. Keep nails trimmed on pets.

4. Clean up spills immediately with a paper towel or dry cloth. A damp cloth can be used for sticky spills, but dry the spot immediately afterwards with another towel or cloth.

5. Lift rather than drag furniture when moving it and use felt contacts under furniture legs to prevent scratches and gouges.

6. Use sheers or blinds to protect your floors from the discoloration caused by direct sun rays.

With proper care and maintenance, your hardwood floors will retain their beauty and enhance any décor that you choose. When your floors become worn, or if they become damaged, they can be restored to their former glory with a little time, effort, and money. Use the Internet to check out quality products, read the information on how to use them, compare prices, and place your orders. We can help with all your hardwood floor care needs – everything from discount hardwood flooring to hardwood cleaners – and all items can be purchased online and delivered to your door. Let us help you keep your hardwood floors looking their best.

Creating A Home Improvement Plan

Posted:29 June, 2009 by admin

You’ve got your eye on the out-dated kitchen or you think you might want to just tear up your carpeting and install hardwood floors, but before you start to rip out the cabinets or the carpet make sure to establish some guidelines for your home improvement plan. A good home improvement plan should take into account: budget, financing, scope of work, functionality and aesthetics, resale value.

Budget Considerations

One good way to find out what you can afford is to simply get three estimates from contractors. Discuss what you want with the contractor and if the estimate is high, ask them how you can reduce the costs. The estimate should be separated into cost of materials and cost of labor. By getting a professional opinion first, you may find that the bids are very similar and you have a good starting point for the high-end cost of your project.

Now, you can begin to factor in whether there is some work you can do yourself. This will improve the amount of cash outlay necessary to complete the work. Another way to get to meet your budget is to shop for a cheaper source of materials or change the type of material used. Either way, these are highly flexible items in your home improvement budget.

Sources of Financing

If one doesn’t have the money, the inclination is not to do the home improvement. Cash, however, is not the only way to pay for a home improvement plan, you can also finance. If you find you don’t have enough cash, you can use a home equity loan to finance the remodeling of your home. Try to identify additional forms of financing in case you need additional monies to complete the project. In the end, a home improvement project should add to the resale value of your home for it to be a sound purchase.

Scope of Work

This is where a good plan is essential. If you are planning a major remodel, you will want some basic plans drawn up, preferably by a professional. You don’t want to find out later that the wall you envisioned removing for a more open space is a critical weight-bearing wall. Similarly, you don’t want to plan for electronic appliances and devices in an area where there are no outlets. If you plan on revamping a kitchen, the dimensions of workspace and appliance real estate are very important. Don’t try to eyeball it or you’ll end up paying for it later in time, additional work, or wasted purchases. By trying to define the scope of the work on paper first, you can bypass many of the simple problems that arise from not having thought the improvement plan out thoroughly.

Functionality And Aesthetics

Obviously, we don’t just want to substitute one thing for another, we want the new home improvement to outshine the old room. We want it to work better for us and we want that “ah” factor too. Have you done your research on the functionality of the appliances and space arrangements? How about the aesthetics and maintenance of the materials you chose? Does the improvement help to accommodate the growing needs of your family? Will it continue to be of service after 5 years? 10 years? These are all factors that should be considered and weighed against budget, scope, and resale value.

Resale Value

This is a tricky value that can’t really be foreseen that much. We know that kitchen and bathroom remodels recoup the most on the sale of the house. No home improvement will recoup 100% of the price it took to remodel, however, if you are in a climbing real estate market that might not matter. What you don’t want to do is to add a home improvement that detracts from the value of your property. Adding a fifth bedroom in a neighborhood of four bedroom homes would be detrimental to the value of your home. Adding a swimming pool in areas where houses with pools don’t sell well would also be considered an investment that could not be recouped. Some people still do it anyways. The point is that most home improvements are done to meet the needs of a particular family and the desire for a more comfortable living space. While resale value is important, it is just one of the many considerations that have to be evaluated in a good home improvement plan.

Was looking for an affordable and comfortable option for my 14 year old who was tired of sleeping on a futon. Found and ordered this. It is indeed 3 seperate foam pads of varying thickness and density. It was shipped very quickly in 3 boxes that can be easily handled by one person. You open the box , remove the plastic overwrap, and give the pads about an hour to decompress, then you just stack them to create the matress. It also comes with a decent foam pillow and a matress cover that keeps all 3 pads together and looks like a regular matress.

My son LOVES it and it is very comfortable, it competes with much more expensive store bought foam matresses. It also fit perfectly on the futon frame, so we did not have to buy another bedframe. My only concern is that it will tend to sag over time where he sleeps in the middle; we will address this by an aggressive practice of rotating and flipping the pads to get maximum life out of the matress (they are light enough one person can do this).

If it lasts 4 years, I will definitely consider this a very good deal and a good product.

I received the 10" mattress combo last week in perfect condition and within a few days of my order. the mattress comes in three boxes and each layer was individually sealed. The web site says assembly required but actually requires only unwrapping and laying the pads on top of each other. I was looking for a foam mattress and lucked onto this web page. I have used a foam mattress for twenty years and have become spoiled to the comfort. This is a good mattress and a great deal…considering I spent $700 twenty years ago.
