Which Deck Railing Designs Will You Choose?

Posted:31 July, 2009 by admin

When it comes to creating the perfect home deck railings, there are hundreds of designs to choose from. The Railings are generally the most important part of the deck and so you really need to ensure that in order to create that perfect look, you choose the perfect design.

Getting the Design Just Right

When it comes to choosing the design of the railings, it is important to realize that you do not have to match the design of the deck with the railings. For example, you could choose a base which is made of wood due to the fact that it is durable. However, you may wish to have an iron railing. As long as it looks OK it shouldn’t really matter but a lot of the time people feel it looks too odd sot hey do choose a matching design and material.

Generally deck railings go well on the porch and before you install anything you need a porch railing plan. You need to take measurements, figure out which style you would like to achieve. Do you want a particular pattern for example flowers or an animal of some sorts? Try and find something which matches your personality.

Sometimes the best material to go for and a good deck railing design include the stainless steel cable railing. For this type of a railing a stainless steel top is used but instead of using balusters like most railings do, cables are used instead. Glass balusters are also quite commonly used and they tend to add a touch of sophistication to the railings.

If you really want to add something a little more special, flower boxes may be a good idea. They make the railings more welcoming and they also add a touch of elegance too. There are various different accessories to choose from and some can add a classic look to the railings whilst others look a little more modern.

Overall it is always better to create a plan of action beforehand. So, if you are choosing the railings for the porch create a porch railing plan. It is important to write down everything that you need to know before going on a search for the perfect materials and accessories. Include all measurements, what theme you are going for i.e. modern, contemporary, and what material you would prefer.

It might take a little shopping around but you should find something to suit your deck railing needs eventually.

Kitchen Renovations and Island Creations

Posted:31 July, 2009 by admin

Most homeowners could rhyme off a list of things they would like to change in their home design or decoration. One of the most rewarding projects I have worked on in recent times was a do-it-yourself kitchen island. By following the instructions below, you will be able to transform your simple kitchen into an island oasis…or something like that.

If you are like most homeowners, you have spent a fair amount of time in antique markets looking for that perfect new addition for your home. The next time you are out at the antique market or even a local garage sale, keep your eyes open for an old buffet. You can likely find one for less than 50 dollars, and it could well become your favorite piece of furniture.

Most buffets were designed to rest against a wall, and they generally have a cheaper wood covering the back side. When you get the buffet home, remove the cheap back board and start cleaning it up. I would recommend replacing the back board with tongue-and-groove pine. It is relatively cheap, and it looks great!

If the buffet is in poor condition, why not consider painting it? There are some wonderful colors available in paint today, and you could really have some fun with it. I particularly enjoy the paints that leave an aged, antique finish.

Next, you will need a piece of plywood for the top surface of your island. It should be cut so that there is approximately three inches of overhang on all sides. Once you have the plywood cut to the right specifications, place it on top of the buffet and secure it with screws.

Now it is time to edge the top with molding that matches the thickness of the material you are going to use for the surface. We chose to use marble tile, but you can feel free to use stone or ceramic. Tile the top surface as you would any other tiling job.

There are a number of ways to increase the functionality of your new kitchen island. One such way is to install a towel rack on one end of the island. Another option is to add some hooks on the opposite end that can be used to hang pots and pans from. Beyond that, you can always add new hardware to dress it up some more. Happy building!

Clearing a Stopped Commode

Posted:31 July, 2009 by admin

Its a horrible feeling. You flush the toilet and instead of going down, you start seeing the water level rise. In a frenzy you rush to turn the water shut off valve off if you know where it is. Hopefully you have managed to get the water off before the bowl completely overflows onto your floor. If not, you have quite a mess to clean up. But after the water stops and you clean up the mess do you know how to clear the clog? This article will give you some tips.

If you have a small clog in your toilet it will be quite easy to clear. You can usually take care of it with just a basic plunger. Every home should have a plunger so if you do not have one, go to the store and buy a good plunger. If the bowl is full to the rim you will need to empty it slightly to avoid splashes. Now insert the plunger into the bowl and position it in the center. Push down slowly and smoothly. Do this several times and the clog should disappear. If it does not, you may have a more severe clog.

If a plunger fails to clear a clog you will need to move to a toilet snake. You can buy or even rent them at just about any home improvement store. Make sure you get a toilet snake and not a general drain snake. It is designed to not scratch your toilet. Simply place the toilet snake into your commode and into the drain hole ant the bottom of the bowl. Turn the handle and move the snake into the drain pipe and out again. Repeat this step several times. If you remove the clog, flush the toilet a few times to completely remove all material from the pipes.

Between these two methods, your clog should be history. If these methods of clog removal failed to clear your pipes though you should contact a professional plumber. You might have a severe clog which requires professional attention.

A few years ago one of our large mature honey locust trees (50′ tall) fell onto our house during a pretty ferocious windstorm. Unfortunately for us we didn’t own a chainsaw, but our neighbor had this little monster and boy was it a lifesaver!

We were outside cutting the tree off the house for a good six hours straight and this thing didn’t slowdown the least bit. Not once did it bog down or couldn’t make it through the hard wood of the locust.

The size of the saw was perfect, compact enough to get into a lot of tight spots, but large enough for the big branches.

The other nice thing was that when you released the trigger the chain stopped spinning pretty quickly, unlike a lot of gas and electric chainsaws I’ve used. This is especially great when you are dangling off a ladder/halfway up a tree and using the chainsaw one handed, it makes it a whole lot safer and reduces the chance and likelihood of accidents.

This brings me to another thing I like about it, it’s fairly lightweight BUT has exceptional build quality, especially for the price (which was surprising)! Again not once during the six hours of constant use did I feel like it was unsafe or was going to break, it’s built solid!

Of course a saw is only as good as it’s chain, so keep it sharp and this baby will continue to run like a champ.

Whether you are pruning dead branches, removing unwanted growth, or taking down an entire tree, this saw will deliver unsurpassed performance year after year.

So to recap…

Pros:
Lightweight
Exceptional build quality (built like a tank)
Consistently performs without hesitation, even after hours of constant use
Electric, so no mixing of oil and gas (yeah!)
Fiberglass extension pole provides safe and secure trimming, even when fully extended

Cons:
It’s electric so during a blackout it’s worthless (duh)
Small chain oil reservoir requires you to stop and fill it up more often, not a huge problem just something I thought I should mention

Tips On How To Build A Drywall Ceiling

Posted:31 July, 2009 by admin

One of the first things the do-it-yourselfer realizes when learning how to build a drywall ceiling is that no man is an island ? unless he uses rented equipment! Because the panels are big, bulky, and awkward, hanging drywall on a ceiling entails one or the other: the help of another person or renting a drywall jack from your local home improvement center. The cable mechanism on drywall jacks is not difficult to operate, and jacks do an excellent job of holding the drywall in a secure, flat position enabling you to more easily attach it to the ceiling.

Tools & Materials

How to build a drywall ceiling includes knowing what all tools and material you?ll need. In addition to either another person to help you or a drywall jack, you?ll also need a hammer, a drill with a screwdriver bit, and nails or screws for drywall. You?ll also, of course, need to measure your ceiling (twice!) and purchase enough drywall, including a little extra in case of mistakes, to do the job.

Mark Joists First

Find the boards ? usually 2×4s or 2×6s ? that function as ceiling joists by tapping along the wall studs with a hammer and following up the wall to the ceiling. As part of learning how to build a drywall ceiling, mark where these boards are located with a pencil. These are what you will be attaching the drywall to and marking them beforehand makes it much easier to find them than trying to find them as you are nailing or screwing on the drywall. You then need to measure where the light fixture goes on the drywall and cut out a hole to accommodate that area of the ceiling.

The Tough Part

Now?s the part in learning how to build a drywall ceiling where you?ll need the other person (who hopefully has plenty of stamina in addition to strength!) to hold the drywall up to the ceiling or to put the drywall panel on the jack. Position the end of the sheet of drywall ? with its finished side facing down ? at the center of the ceiling board (joist) to which you are going to nail it. Nail around the outside of the panel about a half an inch from the edges to prevent the drywall from splitting or cracking. The person who is holding the panel can now move or, if you?re using a jack, you can move it out of the way.

Make It Pretty

Countersink nails or screws at six- or seven-inch intervals all along the length of the joist to which the drywall has been attached. Countersinking allows you to cover up the heads of the nails/screws with compound so that when you paint, the heads won?t be at all visible. Although not really a part of knowing how to build a drywall ceiling, learning how to cover up ugly nail or screw heads serves its own purpose for overall general carpentry knowledge.

Learning how to build a drywall ceiling takes a lot more muscle than to attach the sheets to the walls, but it can be done with a little thought, at least one other person, and/or a jack. It really is pretty hard work, but, hey, after all ? you can do anything, right?

Examining an Air Purifier Humidifier

Posted:31 July, 2009 by admin

Many of the newer air purifiers on the market today are a wonderful investment into your health. If you are looking for a better breathing environment in a room you should look at the new air purifiers on the market, but that only solves part of the problem.

People are often confused as to the difference between an air purifier and a humidifier. Humidifiers add water vapors to the air. If these systems are not cleaned properly and often, they may also spew allergens into air in convenient water-droplet carrying form.

Air purifiers attract particles via what is called ionization. This method captures, binds, and neutralizes the particles in the air. One system will not cancel out the other per se, but one will not enhance the other one either. If you are trying to decide if you need an air purifier humidifier system you should determine how your body will react to moister in the air.

Your skin can benefit from the added moister, but you will also see some effect on your furniture as well. If you have a piano in the room it can be a benefit, but too much moister will cause sticking keys and other problems. Your skin on the other hand can relax and soak up the moister helping it to grow and stretch properly.

Do you need the air cleaned or hydrated? If you need both, then hey, it’s your electric bill. You must remember that these systems will cost you money each day that they are running. The benefits can often out way the expenses, but you should be prepared for higher electric bills.

When looking into an air-cleaners-and-purifiers.com/air-purifier-humidifier.php air purifier humidifier system you should consider the best filters available for your unit. Examine the cost to keep good filters installed and also the time involved in maintenance. Far too many people feel they can just buy and air purifier humidifier system and let it go. It is only as good as you make it.

Do you remember the Boy Scouts motto? Well if you don’t it’s ok; the scout motto is “BE PREPARED”. While noone will debate Hurricane Katrina could not be avoided, the flooding afterwards is currently being debated as to whether or not that could have been avoided. What could you have done if you were one of the unfortunate ones caught in the hurricanes’ path of destruction?

If you had remembered the Boy Scouts motto you would have had a home inventory
stored in a safe and secure location far away from your home. What is a home
inventory? A home inventory is document that includes pictures, documentation
and information about every item in your household. The reason you need this is
best explained by the following “Having a home inventory is one of the best ways to
maximize your insurance dollars,” says Insurance Infrmation institute spokeswoman
Jeanne M. Salvatore as quoted By Don Oldenburg
Washington Post: Tuesday, January 25, 2005; Page C10

In other words as your insurance policy says, you may have to prove what you have
lost. So if your home was destroyed by a Hurricane, fire or any other cause; when
you file your claim you are going to have another heartbreaking experience in trying
to get paid for your losses because you can’t prove what you lost unless you have a
home inventory that will smoothen out the claims process and maximize your claim,
as Ms. Salvatore mentioned.

“People make three common mistakes. The first one is not buying flood insurance.
The second one is not insuring a home to its full replacement cost value. And third
is not having a home inventory. You can get free home inventory software at
Insurance Information Institute.” from the transcript of Carolyn Gorman Vice
President, Insurance Information Institute live online Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. ET
to take questions and comments about coverage for damage claims caused by
Hurricane Katrina: Tuesday, September 6, 2005; 1:00 PM Washington Post.

Don’t be caught unprepared, prepare for the unexpected. It’s the reason you have
insurance and if you have it you should do everything in your power to get the most
dollars for your claim. Don’t procrastinate any longer, this preventative medicine is
worth it’s weight in
gold. Get your home inventory now www. iii.org provides free software for you to
do it on your own or your can contact www.myhiss.com, they are a home inventory

Digital Cameras

Posted:30 July, 2009 by admin

Photographs are treasured all over the world. These images immortalize our happy memories and occasions. Cameras have been in use since ages, from the days of black and white photographs to more modern color ones. However, the conventional camera has one major drawback. It needs to be reloaded with new film when the roll runs out. This might prove to be a problem, especially if a person is on the move and film is not readily available. Moreover, film cannot be exposed to light, as all the images stored in it are likely to be destroyed. Because of all these shortcomings, digital cameras have emerged as a viable solution for photographers.

Digital cameras have bought about a significant change in the world of photography. These cameras offer the highest quality images, something, which cannot be matched by a conventional camera. The image quality or resolution of a digital camera is measured in pixels. A million pixels make up a megapixel, which is used to denote the power of a digital camera.

Digital cameras store images on a miniature memory chip instead of on film. In most modern digital cameras, the image captured can be instantly previewed on a small liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. The memory of a digital camera will vary, depending on the price of the unit. However, replacing the existing memory card or adding a new one can increase the memory. All digital cameras let the user transfer the images onto a computer for easy viewing and editing.

Most digital cameras come with an optical and digital zoom mode. The former is operated by an outward moving lens, which facilitates sharp, clear and close-up photographs. The latter is an in-built software that edits the edges and automatically enlarges the center of the image. However, photographs taken using digital zoom are of an inferior quality as compared to optical zoom.

When buying a digital camera, several brands and their features should be perused before making the purchase. A fixed budget should be kept in mind and a camera with the best features within the price range should be picked.

The Thrill of Triple Bunk Beds

Posted:30 July, 2009 by admin

Ideally, your child’s bedroom offers an environment which stimulates his or her creativity and imagination, and has the ability to change over time. In achieving the latter, triple bunks beds are often helpful as they certainly reduce the square footage needed for three children to sleep.

Triple bunk beds are available with three twin-sized beds. Any other sized beds would need to be custom-made. When shopping for triple bunk beds, consider who the beds are for, your options and your budget.

Parents should be aware of the safety issues that accompany triple bunk beds. A child sleeping on the top bunk may be at least six feet in the air. Clearly, if your kids are terribly rambunctious, these beds may not be your best bet as monkey-play and bunk beds do not go together.

With regards to budget, when selecting a bunk bed, your budget needs to be high enough to ensure that the bed meets minimum safety standards put out by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Triple bunk beds are clearly a show-piece to any bedroom. They are not terribly common, and thus stand out. Kids love them since they are unique and exciting. However, parents must be sure not to let the excitement around these beds overshadow the potential safety risk, and as such, must choose a quality bed.

I bought these for my wife awhile back with some paints to hopefully get her back into her love for painting and she has had no complaints at all. For the price, you are a getting a good selection of brushes and a little holder for them all. They are not of the greatest quality, but they are not of the worst either.
If you are a beginner wanting to get into painting, I suggest this as a decent started set of brushes, or if you just need some extra brushes but do not want to spend a lot of money on nice onces that you are just going to trash or anything, this is a good set.

for the price, these brushes are perfect! they are a lot better than my old ones that had fallen apart. really helped my painting skills out.

Review date : 2007-06-04
Though you may get what you pay for, these brushes are a steal for the price. They’re cheap, and the quality shows the price…yet insofar, none have broken, and now that they’re broken-in, they aren’t terrible.

Bottom line: certainly not professional quality, but unmissable for the price.

Exceptionally good quality. I recommend this product for beginning to intermediate painters. The carrier is a nice bonus for transporting to the field.
