Help Choosing Door and Window Hardware

Posted:30 September, 2009 by admin

Who would be the best person to help you find suitable fixtures and fittings for doors and windows?

Architects are trained to create designs that are structurally sound, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. They also often have a basis knowledge of construction materials, though not the detailed knowledge required when choosing appropriate hardware.

Interior designers specialize in the decorating and furnishing of rooms and can offer fresh, innovative ideas and advice, but will be concentrating on the appearance rather than how the fittings work.Maybe a blacksmith or metal worker would be the person to ask.. No, a joiner is the best person to give advise.

Joiners understand what is needed, they have made doors and windows and know how big a hinge would be needed to hold the weight of a solid oak door, or which lock would fit properly and safely in rebated french windows. Advise is often needed as good quality hardware can be expensive. You need to get the right thing, before cutting holes in your precious doors and windows.

Architectural Ironmongery Ltd is run by trained joiners with over getting on for 90 years of joinery knowledge and experience between the three of them. They are happy to discuss restoration projects with their customers, giving advise when necessary. The retail and mail order business is based in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England, but ships world wide and has a huge amount and variety of hardware in stock. arciron.com” target=”_new arciron.com

This insidious intruder may lurk inside your walls and could destroy your home and seriously affect your health. If this happens, would you know what to do? Three mold detection experts felt that the subject of mold was not well understood, so they decided to write a complete book on mold to empower home and building owners about solutions to mold problems as well as mold prevention.

Mold Matters - Solutions and Prevention is a complete guide on mold from A-to-Z written by mold detection experts. Learn about the effects of mold on health and buildings, the process of mold inspection and mold remediation, how to handle water intrusion before mold develops and how to practice mold prevention. Years of field experience observing, researching, and documenting water damage and mold conditions led three mold detection experts to the conclusion that a large percentage of these cases could have been avoided by following simple preventive measures. To their dismay they also saw homeowners who had been taken advantage by unscrupulous “wannabe” experts. So, their intent was to empower homeowners with the knowledge they need to be in control of a mold situation and learn valuable tips on mold prevention. To heighten understanding or to clarify a point the authors have included many color pictures, diagrams, and flowcharts.

Practicing mold prevention has never been so important. Following the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005, insurance companies faced large number of mold claims and as a result many companies no longer cover mold problems. This move puts the responsibility entirely on homeowners. Thus learning about mold and practicing mold prevention is an absolute necessity in protecting health, homes, and saving money.

This book is suitable for the home or building owner, inspector, insurance adjuster, lawyer, real estate broker, apartment or hotel manager, or a member of a maintenance crew. The same principles that apply to homes, also apply to apartment complexes, retail spaces, and office buildings, and hotels. Reducing downtime following natural disasters is one of the primary goals of large companies.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Danielle and Charles Dobbs are principals of Dobbs Enterprises, Inc., a mold inspection and sampling company based in Maitland, Florida. They are authors of Mold Matters - Solutions and Prevention, and have written many articles. They also founded the International Institute of Professional Mold Inspectors, iipmi.com iipmi.com where they offer online courses. They give onsite or online classes to engineers and maintenance crew on water intrusion and mold management. A unique telephone consulting service, a first in the nation, provides homeowners and building owners with an unbiased expert opinion or guidance about their particular mold problem.

How To Improve Your Home With A Microfiber Sofa

Posted:30 September, 2009 by admin

Furniture can really help to finish off the overall look of a newly refurbished home, or it can be used to replace old and tatty furniture as well. Whatever the reason, people love to have great looking and comfortable sofas within their homes. The great thing is that they come in many different styles, types and colors to suit everyone’s different tastes and needs.

You may only have two people in a house and need a small sofa or it could be that you have a large family and you need a two seater and a three seater sofa within the room. With all of the different styles there are, one of the most revolutionary used materials for a sofa is the Microfiber sofa. The reason this is so great is because it is one hundred times finer than what a human hair is. A lot of these microfiber sofas use polyester for the base fabric as they are better than other materials for absorbing color.

What are the Benefits of a Microfiber Sofa?

In the world of sofas, these microfiber sofas are taking people by storm and they are becoming extremely popular. They can be coordinated to fit well with the style and decor of the rest of the room as they come in different colors. They are also popular because they are lightweight, they are soft and they are relatively easy to care for as well.

With these great qualities, microfiber sofas are great for people who suffer from allergies. The reason behind this is because the fibers do not leave any lint or dust lying around. Also something that may be of interest to many people is that this fiber is naturally stain resistant. To keep them clean, use a couple of drops of mild detergent and dilute it with water then give it a wipe. It is as simple as that!

What should you consider when buying a Microfiber Sofa?

These Microfiber sofas are quite popular and a lot of people love having these in their homes. The problem is that they may buy the wrong sofa for their room so it is always best to make a list of your requirements beforehand. Try considering a few of these pointers:-

- How will a microfiber sofa benefit you?
- What color and style do you need to suit your room?
- Can you afford a microfiber sofa?
- Will it make the room look complete?

By having requirements beforehand, it helps you to make the right decision when buying the right sofa for you.

There are Many Types of Four Seasons Sunrooms

Posted:30 September, 2009 by admin

I was very excited about our decision to add a four seasons sunroom onto our home. There is an incredible range of choices in the designs for such a project.

The company we decided to work with had lovely designs to choose from. The “straight” model was just what it sounded like. It was a plain design with no additional features. The design was well done. but it
was not the type of room I had in mind. We decided against it almost immediately because of the starkness of the design.
In our Victorian home. it would look too modern and not keep the old fashioned style and tone of the old house. Since there
were no elements in the straight design that would tie it to the look of the rest of our house. we decided to look at other
designs. The next plan we looked at was the curved plan. This. too. had smooth modern lines that would not complement
the look of a beautiful old Victorian. As soon as we saw it. we knew it was not the right choice for us. The third choice
available looked like it was just the right one for us. This was the “cathedral” sunroom design and it was just the thing to
blend into the old fashioned look of our Victorian home. The high ceilings mirrored the interior rooms of the house. and the
design of the structure had details that fit with the same old fashioned look. However. this sunroom was rather large compared to the size of our home. and would dwarf the look. It was disappointing that the cathedral style did not fit “size wise”. since from a design point of view it was a perfect fit. On to the last style. and a good thing too. because at this point I am getting tired of looking.

Luckily. this last choice was a perfect one for us. This style was called the “conservatory” and it is an absolutely stunning four seasons sunroom. The hoices available to us for materials was also wonderful. and we chose wood. which is the logical choice for an old fashioned home. Our problem was choosing between two different styles called Georgian Conservatory and Victorian Conservatory. They were both so beautiful that choosing between them seemed impossible. The Victorian seemed the right choice because of its name. but the Georgian had just as much appeal.

Now we are very happy with our beautiful four seasons sunroom. It combines the old fashioned look that we needed for our
Victorian home with modern construction techniques that combine excellent design and quality.

Landscape Remodelling - Think Green

Posted:29 September, 2009 by admin

When we say; “think green” we are not talking about the color of the pressure treated lumber that you will use for the deck in your landscaping project! A “green” remodel is an environmentally friendly approach to any home renovation project. Thinking green not only improves the look of your home but it is a healthier home with less maintenance and lower utility costs. Plus you are contributing to a making our planet a better place for future generations.

As with all landscaping projects, good planning is the key to success and cost efficiencies. If you plan green, you will obtain a wide range of additional benefits that include, comfort and convenience coupled with beauty and efficiency and all of these will be structured on environmentally sound conservation policies with a view to increasing the health of you and your family.

Every landscaping project is made up of two aspects – installation and maintenance. If you only consider the initial installation and not the ongoing maintenance you are not “thinking green”. Always choose products and materials that have low levels of toxicity initially and require minimal maintenance in the future.

Consider the overall ecological impact of the landscaping plan. Does your plan:

absorb, or retain storm water or will it create run-off?

conserve water, use drip irrigation techniques?

utilize materials and products that contain toxins that will leach into the ground, water table or air?

utilize materials and products made of recycled materials?

utilize materials that are harmless to the environment when disposed of?

require a lot of maintenance?

As an example, the use of landscaping fabric to control the growth of weeds and grasses in gardens, decks, walkways and patios will increase the initial cost of the project. But in the long term you are avoiding the use of costly toxic materials and the time and effort involved in removing the unwanted plant growth.

When considering the cost of your project include future maintenance. A lot of products can have a lower initial cost but if maintenance is included and projected over the expected life of the item it may actually cost a lot more. In landscaping projects, products and materials usually have to stand up to extreme environmental conditions. From extreme swings in temperature to the sun’s UV rays, ice, rain, wind and snow are all factors that must be considered when choosing materials and products to complete your landscaping project.

Pool Landscaping Is As Easy As ABC

Posted:29 September, 2009 by admin

Do you have any plans of putting up a pool in your backyard? Is it an on-ground pool, in-ground or above the ground. If yes, then this article will be helpful for you.

There’s lots of pool landscaping ideas that can help you achieve your dream swimming pool in your home. In putting up landscape to your pool you have to consider maintaining your privacy, the shade, and physical appeal.

To maintain your privacy while enjoying in your pool, you can plant some trees around the pool. Through this, you don’t have to worry on your neighbors that they might see you. Of course, fences around your pool must be in proper height so that you won’t be seen outside your house.

Aside from the trees that you will plant around the pool, you can also put some big umbrellas or cottages around the pool that will give shade to your pool. This will also serve as your protection from the sun when you are out of the pool. Cottages and tables with big umbrellas is also a good place to enjoy eating your foods.

The most important thing in your pool landscaping is the physical appearance. Having a good ambience and a perfect landscape will add more enjoyment in your pool. Adding some colorful flowers will surely bring life to pool but make sure to place these items more than three feet from the pool to avoid accident.

You can also place some colorful lights around the pool. This would add an attraction to your pool and you can still go for swimming at night. Just make sure you can see the bottom of the pool.

Putting pebbles around the pool can help lessen slip and accidents especially when there are kids running around the pool. DVD Players/Recorders

Posted:29 September, 2009 by admin

DVD players have been around for a long time now and have become quite cheap to purchase. Even though they all play the same DVD’s there are several features some DVD players have.

Most DVD players can play music. This is important if you don’t have a stereo at home. It’s also great if you have music backed up to DVD’s as you can choose from a huge selection of songs as DVD’s have a much greater capacity than CD’s.

An important thing to look for in a DVD player is if it plays different formats of video. For example some DVD players play DivX and windows media files making the DVD player a lot more functional in terms of compatibility.

Now to the recording side. DVD players have been around for a long time as opposed to DVD recorders, which haven’t been around for that long at all. This is why DVD recorders cost a lot more than DVD players. Being able to record to DVD is a great. You can record all your favourite television shows onto a DVD and store them for later viewing.

A great feature some DVD players have is a built in hard disk. Meaning they have a hard drive like a computer that you can record onto. This is a particularly useful feature. Some DVD recorders have a hard disk of 100gig. To give you an idea of how much space that is you could fit 25 full length movies onto it. You will never run out of space or run to the shops because you ran out of DVD’s.

One important thing to consider when choosing a DVD player/recorder is the emerging technologies that might render it obsolete. With the competing technologies of Blueray and HD-DVD it is more than likely your DVD player/recorder will become obsolete. Some good advice would be to wait a while before investing money in a DVD player/recorder. technologyslice.com www.technologyslice.com

Waterfall Ponds Bring Sounds Of Nature Closer To Home

Posted:29 September, 2009 by admin

When sitting around the yard on a balmy summer night with the stars blinking overhead, the soothing sound of water rustling nearby can increase the serenity of the moment and one way to bring that sound closer to home is by installing waterfall ponds near your favorite spot in the yard. They can be installed near a deck, close to the house or just about anywhere on your property where space allows.

Once you have decided where you would like it located, contact the local utility department to make sure there are no buried utility lines in the area where you will be digging the hole for the waterfall pond’s location. While you will need to make sure you have a grounded power outlet available, you do not want to connect it by accidentally cutting through a line with your shovel.

Before you get too far along, have an electrician install the right outlet you will need to plug in the water pump for waterfall ponds. Also, be conscious of its position when put in the ground to insure the front lip will overflow any rocks placed to create the falls.

Sand Can Help Level And Protect Liner

Placing a few inches of sand in the bottom of the hole before placing the plastic lining inside can serve two purposes. One, it can help protect the waterfall ponds liner from possible damage from any rocks in the bottom of the hole. Second, when the liner is in place, check that it is level from all sides. If any adjustments are needed, remove the liner and adjust the level of the sand.

The route designed for the water to flow must be carefully thought through and a means to recapture the water will help keep water bills down and the area surrounding the waterfall ponds dry. Additionally, since the use of waterfall ponds is typically for decoration as opposed to a fish pond, it will most likely only be operated while you are enjoying the sights and sounds of a working waterfall.

You will want to keep a close watch on the water level, because if it gets too low it will burn out the water pump. Again, it is mostly for decoration and turning it off when not in use is prudent, and it should also be turned off when you are not going to be home or if on vacation. In general, listening to the sounds stemming from waterfall ponds can be soothing experience that you may want to share with friends.

The house you choose to live in is more than just a place to hang your hat. It is the location where you develop rapport with neighbors, raise your family, entertain friends and for the most part, seek serenity. Because a home fulfills so many needs, it’s important to create a living space that you love, one that reflects your individual taste. Regardless of the styles that are supposedly in or out, your own personal preferences are what matter most. And since there isn’t one type of furnishing that is more beautiful than another, it all boils down to simply choosing what you like. As a result, whether you are planning to decorate an apartment or furnishing an entire house, your environment should replicate your personality. Remember, your living space becomes your haven, therefore finding the right furnishings and accent pieces should fit your way of life.

Where to Start!

As you prepare to start the decorating process, it may at first seem like beautifying your home will be a challenging and overwhelming task, but with a little bit of planning, decorating can be a fun experience. After all, choosing correctly is what ultimately turns your house into a home. So, start by deciding on the style of furniture that makes your heart sing. To uncover your own individual taste, look through magazines, visit furniture shops and take note of the furnishings you see in other people’s homes. Just as you make choices when selecting your clothing, you will notice that certain types of decor feel more appealing when compared to others. Go with that instinct. Whether you choose rustic, romantic, vintage, French, traditional, or modern, each of these choices and styles make for a beautiful atmosphere.

Fabrics, Textures & Colors

The next important step is deciding on colors, fabrics and textures. While making a selection may seem somewhat daunting, don’t allow all the choices to intimidate you. Just pay attention to what strikes your fancy. Begin by deciding whether you prefer bold, cool or warmer shades. Perhaps you prefer the monotone look or potentially you love fabrics that have texture complete with checks, stripes or frilly prints. Maybe you don’t want to stick to one style and would prefer certain rooms to be bolder while others softer. No problem. This can easily work well together. And if you’re concerned that your favorite color is too daring, have no fear. You might consider using that color as an accent rather than in larger pieces of furniture. For example, if your preferred color happens to be orange or bright yellow, you might tire of it too quickly if it’s the main focus. But if you place an orange throw pillow on your sofa, or hang a beautiful wall arrangement that includes your color of choice, you’ll be using the colors you love while at the same time giving your environment lots of flair.

Accessorizing Correctly!

For rooms to be complete they must have your own special finishing touches and accessories of course give your home its unique and inviting feel. This is achieved with various types of wall hangings, pictures, flower arrangements, and decorations that create appeal and interest and tie it all together. Choosing timeless pieces and works of art add to the style you want to establish in your home and make it place that you love to live in. Some ideas that add warmth and appeal is hanging mirrors or using candles distributed throughout the environment. Bookcases filled with books you love make your very own special library. And of course wrought iron items and accessories make your home elegant, unique and totally your own. (Continued)

In Closing

As you begin the decorating process, one word of advice is to trust your instincts. Have confidence in your own decisions and choose colors and furnishings that you like. Never allow someone else to convince you to choose differently, even if what you want is not considered in style. You’re the one that has to live with it, so a good rule of thumb when you’re starting to decorate is that if you’re not attracted to it, it isn’t for you. Whether you’re decorating an apartment or doing a complete makeover on a house, a beautifully decorated environment is a gift you give yourself that will last a very long time.
